Manufacturing Engineering courses in India provide the nitty-gritty of the manufacturing industry. Manufacturing Engineering education in India, in this way serves a great purpose to the nation. This is because the constant need for manufactured products. Manufacturing engineering is defined as – A specialised field which studies different manufacturing practices, research and development of processes, machines and equipment. It is a broad field of study, which also involves the design and development of products. Manufacturing Engineering is also denoted as Manufacturing Technology and/or Manufacturing Science. Manufacturing engineering principles are also found in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, production engineering and operations management. Owing to the similarities there are strong overlaps amongst these. In fact, to a large extent manufacturing engineering is a part of mechanical engineering. Study of electrical engineering, electronic engineering, computer science and materials management is also involved in the study. Manufacturing engineering graduates are known as Manufacturing Engineers. Manufacturing engineers apply scientific principles to the production of goods. Manufacturing engineers job is crucial for the advancement of technology and the spread of innovation. Not only this, the betterment of the society as a whole becomes inadvertent for them. There is a great responsibility on the shoulders of manufacturing engineers as such. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (USA) is the world's leading professional society advancing manufacturing knowledge. It has members in more than 70 countries and represents manufacturing practitioners across all industries.

    Course Content: Partial Overview

The study of this field includes all or few of these –

    • Casting Processes
    • Weldments Testing and Metallurgy
    • Fluid Mechanics and Machinery
    • Powder Metallurgy

    Course Objectives

    • To gain theoretical and practical knowledge in all relevant aspects of the discipline.
    • To establish and develop good foundry practices and product design considerations.
    • To develop many advanced techniques which help in designing structures, predict failures and understand the physical properties of materials.

    Course: Basic Requirements

    • Basic eligibility criteria for pursuing a B.E. (Manufacturing Engineering) is to clear 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects. A reasonably high percentage of marks in the aggregate and clearing the different national and state level entrance exams such as All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) etc, is also required.
    • Selection to the B.E. (Manufacturing Engineering) degree course is based on marks secured in the final merit i.e. total marks aggregated in the final exams of 10+2 and the entrance exams.
    • An examination is also conducted by the Associate Membership of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), which enables working people in the private/public sector and diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering through distance education. The degree awarded is considered equivalent to a regular B.E. (Manufacturing Engineering) degree.

Some of the Major Manufacturing Engineering Schools

    Personal Attributes

Aspiring candidates should have strong analytical stills and be detail oriented.

One should be a team player; often you would be required work in team situations as they work other engineers and experts from other fields.

Numeric skill is an important asset. Plus, an inquisitive and logical mind which can translate  ideas and handle abstract concepts.

    Career & Job Perspectives

Manufacturing jobs are never ending jobs in the sense of their availability. If you wonder why? Then look around you, there are different types of products that we use on daily basis. Without these goods, it is hard to imagine a life or a better life. In modern society, everything is manufactured. These manufactured goods are electronics, automobile parts, household products, toys, textiles, clothing, medical devices, automobile parts and the list is endless. And who else than manufacturing engineer or technologist is responsible the chain of supply and consumer is not broken in the fist place. Manufacturing engineers job is itself to design, direct and coordinate the processes and production systems for making virtually every kind of product. They are also in demand to make products better, profitable and economical. Manufacturing firms, as obvious, the major employers. Graduates can work in administrative and managerial positions in government departments or public and private sector industries. They can conduct research and teach as well in Research and teaching institutes. They can also also opt for technical sales / marketing or work as independent consultants. Major companies which offer jobs to manufacturing engineers in the United States include General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Chrysler, Boeing, Gates Corporation and Pfizer. In Europe, these are Airbus, Daimler, BMW, Fiat, and Michelin Tyre. At the international level - Exxon Mobile, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, General Motors, Good Year Tire & Rubber Company, Daimler-Chrysler, Dell are some of the potential multinational employers.
