Master of Philosophy in Linguistics

M.Phil. Linguistics or Master of Philosophy in Linguistics is a postgraduate language course. Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. Linguistics can be broadly broken into three categories or subfields of study: language form, language meaning, and language in context. The first is the study of language structure or grammar. The M.Phil. Programme requires two years of full time study. The second semester of the second year is expected to be devoted fully to the Master's thesis. The Master's thesis is preferably written within the scope of specialization determined by your combination of topics. The thesis is an independent piece of scientific work performed under supervision. This focuses on the system of rules followed by the speakers (or hearers) of a language. It encompasses morphology (the formation and composition of words), syntax (the formation and composition of phrases and sentences from these words), and phonology (sound systems). Phonetics is a related branch of linguistics concerned with the actual properties of speech sounds and non-speech sounds, and how they are produced and perceived. The duration of the course is two years and may be provided by some certain institutes on a part-time basis as well.

• Candidates with 55% (5% relaxation for SC/ST candidates in the minimum eligibility marks) of marks and above in the Master’s degree. PLUS
• Who are working as Full- time Research Fellows/Technical Assistants/Research Assistants in time-bound Research schemes of one-year duration or more in University Departments/Research Departments of Affiliated Colleges/Recognized Research Institutions.
