About Rourkela Institute of Management Studies

Rourkela Institute Of Management Studies (RIMS) was established in the year 1984. In the course of time, it has taken great strides since its inception, becoming one of the premier B-school of the country. It is governed by a governing body, consisting of distinguished industrialists, businessmen, academicians and professionals. It has an atmosphere, which drives away the feeling of anonymity and isolation. Students are given all encouragement in their areas of interest, by providing a hi-tech infrastructure facility, backed by faculty support. RIMS is affiliated to Sambalpur University, Orissa, Biju Pattnaik University of Technology, Rourkela, Orissa, for different programmes and follows the curriculum prescribed by the respective Universities for each of its courses. RIMS offers courses like Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master in Computer Applications (MCA). The faculties are involved in various activities besides teaching and Research. There is a due representation of faculty members in the board. Each of the faculty is involved in certain process like Library, Placement, and Activities etc. Each of the process in linked to academics, leading to overall academic development. The process head sets the development plan and execute it, which is reviewed and discussed in the monthly meeting and faculty meetings. The students are also involved in various subcommittees like- Seminar, Events, Cultural activities etc. The students also plays important role in conducting national level events like National Seminars.

Facilities

Classrooms - The institute's facilities include wired classroom conferencing and high-speed data communication networks. The classrooms are equipped with the most contemporary teaching facilities, which make learning a complete experience. The classrooms are spacious, ventilated and equipped with multimedia and audiovisual equipments to facilitate effective learning. The classrooms are designed to provide maximum interaction between the faculty and students. The institute has eight large classrooms (capacity 120), four rooms (capacity 75) and four rooms (capacity 45), a multimedia hall, and training halls. All the classrooms are well equipped with audio, video systems, overhead projectors, wireless public address systems, computers with large monitors and network connection. Major classrooms are equipped with PCs, Large Monitors and LCD projectors for displaying information.

Hostels - There are separate hostels for boys and girls. There are fully furnished separate hostels (having 2-seated and single seated rooms); for boys and & girls. The rooms are spacious, well furnished, self-contained and duly maintained. They have basic amenities like bed, table, chair, small cupboard and electrical fittings. There is 24-hour water supply also. Hostel residents and staff members have the facility of a huge mess on campus.

CLR - Central Library RIMS holds a hybrid collection of printed as well electronic resources, that include books (15,000), journals(13,000), databases, audio-visuals, CDs/DVDs, e-books, e-journals, reports, case studies, conference proceedings, training manuals and all such materials that are relevant to the current corporate need. To enhance its capacity CLR has tie-up with British Library and National Library, for exchange of books, journals and information. It has also got a tie-up with EBSCO (the world's largest online academic data base service provider) to avail the Business Source Premier. This has enabled it to join an elite group by providing access to a collection of more than 8,350 International Journals (full texts) and some of the back volumes dating up to year 1922. The collection is online that is up dated on a daily basis. It also has provides access to more than 10,000 company and national reports and more than 1100 scholarly business journals. Services such as LIS for checking online availability and reserving online, remote access to e-resources and databases make the library user friendly.

IT Infrastructure - IT is informative and entertaining through comprehensive state-of-the-art technology in the Computer Centre.

IT facilities include:

  1. 220 PCs with inbuilt Pentium processors + 300 Laptops.
  2. All systems are connected by LAN and WAN.
  3. Wireless Campus.
  4. 2mbps dedicated fibre optics leased line from Ortel for 24 X 7 internet connectivity.
  5. The entire network IBM servers rests on four.
  6. The latest software is available to enable the students to work on data analysis, web technologies and software designing.
  7. I-mail system for internal communication
  8. The RIMS intranet truly automates the process of execution and enables smooth movement of data across departments.

Communicative English Lab - RIMS offers an unique opportunity to it's students to Learn Spoken English .For this it has a sophisticated English Communication Lab Equipped with Lingua phone Machines (U .K.based company) and study materials.A 29"T.V. SET, LCD, digital camera etc ensure that students are exposed to cross-cultural communication ,good accent and impressive style which are pre-requisites for a good career. Fluency and accuracy in speech enhances a student's personality ensuring a bright future. Trained English Faculty take regular classes guiding the students for the Business english program and Basic self learning program.

Sports - Athletic Meets and the state level tournaments of various games and other literary activities like Quiz-contest, & Declamation Contest etc. There are many facilities for the students to engage themselves in extra-curricular activities. The institute has a full-fledged Physical Training Department for the students. Students benefit from experienced and qualified Instructors of the department. The college playground is often bubbling with outdoor activities like Cricket, Football and Hockey. There are courts for Volleyball and Basketball. In addition, indoor game facilities like Table tennis, Badminton are available in the student's hostels. Every year, inter-college cricket and football tournaments are conducted in the college. The students of the college also participate in various sports and games competitions elsewhere to represent the college.

Co-curricular Activities
- Students are encouraged to form cultural association with focus on music, dance, elocution, debates, quiz, poetry, literature and so on. Students are encouraged to organize blood donation camps, tree plantation etc. There is a strong impetus on overall personality development of the students.

Society for Research & Information - SRI is one of the premier research societies in the state, for scholars is dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management, information science and organizations. It strives to promote cross-disciplinary practice of management, research activities, scholarly cooperation. Over two decades a formidable expertise, has been built up for undertaking research related to management in various frontiers. Members of SRI are scholars at B-Schools, universities and research institutions as well as practitioners from business, government and not-for-profit organizations. Regular research and development work is conducted in the field of Information Technology and Management. Managerial consultancy is provided to different business organizations.

Mechanism/ Norms & Procedure for democratic / good Governance - RIMS have implemented Quality Management System for improving the quality of service delivered to all the stakeholders. The entire activity of the institution is divided into 12 process with academic being the core process supported by process like library, lab, Training and Placement, Publication etc. It is mandatory to have monthly review meeting in which Management Representative remains present. The forum also provides a platform for the flow of information between the institution and management. Besides this regular academic meeting is conducted at both departmental and institutional level, which results with the input for the development.

Student Feedback on Institutional Governance/ faculty Performance -Student feed back is collected using a structured questionnaire developed in a scale of 1-5. The questionnaire attempts to cover all the important parameters involved. The feedback is taken for all the subjects and the feed back is discussed with the faculties with suggestions for improvement wherever its necessary. The top management does this. Beside this a subjective feedback is collected from the outgoing students where they are encouraged to point out scope for improvement in all service quality dimensions. A feedback is also collected from the Industry where the students are placed for the summer projects. The feedback is given by the industry mentor for each student and reflects the student’s preparedness fro the industry. These feedback forms an important input for the institutional and individual development.

Grievance redressal mechanism for faculty, staff and students - The institute has well defined redressal mechanism for faculty, staff and students. A provision is there in the constitution of Governing Body to have the staff representative and faculty representative for both the genders. Beside this Principal is also a member of GB, so any grievances of staff and faculty can be discussed at the GB meeting. Beside this any staff or faculty can go to the Director and discuss their problems. Students can meet the respective programme head and discuss their problems; they can also meet the Deans or Director for discussion. Any problem of general nature is discussed in the faculty meeting for a solution.

Workshop - Teaching Learning Process: The curriculum of MBA is covered by theory, seminars, projects, dissertations, quiz, case studies, etc. The curriculum is delivered using state of art infrastructure facility including DLP projector, OHP and the audio system. The students are given sufficient system exposure and are encouraged to use the latest tools & techniques for decision-making. The faculties are also encouraged to interact with industries and take up small projects where the theoretical knowledge can be applied. Steps are also taken to have a tie up with the industries to have. Senior faculties conduct modular programme of industry requirement, training programmes, MDP for senior & middle level executives of both public sectors & Private Sectors.

Publication Cell  - The RIMS Publication Cell has been created with a view to promoting and undertaking publications in various areas of management. It has mainly concerned itself with the publication of research works, particularly those relating to the Management & Information Technology. This is a largely self-financing unit.
