About Army Institute of Management Kolkata - AIMK

The Army Institute of Management, Kolkata (formerly National Institute of Management Calcutta (NIMC) was established on 28 July 1997 by the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES), New Delhi, to conduct state-of-art Management Programme for the wards of Army personnel with an opportunity for the general candidates as well. Name of the Institute has been changed to Army Institute of Management, Kolkata with effect from 11 Feb 2005. The eco-friendly campus is spread over nine acres of land at Alipore, in the heart of the City of Joy. AIM is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT). Within a short span of time AIM has become a ranked B-School in the Country. AIM offers Two-year MBA Programme (full time residential). The batch strength of the course is 120. The programme emphasizes on an integrated understanding of theory and practice. Summer Internship is mandatory as an integral part of the MBA Curriculum. Every student has to undergo eight weeks summer internship during May - June at the end of 1st year programme. Special emphasis is given to develop personality traits, communication skills, all-round awareness and practical knowledge of managing resources. Continuous interactions with Industry Captains are maintained through colloquia, seminars and discussions. Admission to AIM is through Common Admission Test (CAT) followed by Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) held at AIM, Kolkata.

Eligibility for Army Categories

The applicants must fall into one of the following categories:-

  • Wards of serving Army personnel with a minimum of ten (10) years of continuous Army service.
  • Wards of ex-Army personnel granted/awarded a regular pension.
  • Wards of ex-Army personnel granted/awarded a liberalized family pension, family pension, or disability pension at the time of their superannuation, demise, discharge, release medical board/invalided medical board. This includes wards of recruits medically boarded out and granted disability pensions.
  • Wards of ex-Army personnel who have taken discharge/release after ten years of service.

Adopted/Step Children and Children of Remarried Widows

  • Adopted Child of Army personnel adopted at least five years prior to seeking admission.
  • Step Children are eligible provided they are born out of a wedding where at least one parent belonged to the Army.
  • Children of Widows of Army personnel who are born as a result of second marriage with Army personnel. However, children of widows of Army personnel born out of remarriage with Non-Army personnel would not be eligible for admission.

Eligibility Criteria in Special Cases

(a) Eligibility Criteria for Wards of Ex-Army Medical Corps Officers/Army Dental Corps Officers Presently Serving with IN/IAF.

(i) Wards of only those ex-Army Medical officers/Army Dental Corps officers presently serving with Indian Navy/Indian Air Force who has served with the Army for 10 years continuously.

(b) Eligibility Criteria for Children of APS Personnel

(i) Children of APS personnel classified as ex-servicemen as per Government of India, Ministry of Defence letter No 9 (52)/88/D(Res) dated 19 Jul 89.
(ii) Children of those APS personnel who are on deputation and who have put in 10 years of continuous service in the Army.
(iii) Children of APS personnel who are directly recruited into APS and of those who, as per their terms and conditions of service, retired from APS after completing their minimum pensionable service.

(c) Eligibility Criteria for Children of MNS/TA Personnel.

(i) Children of only those members of MNS who have 10 years of service as regular members of MNS or are in receipt of pension from the Army.
(ii) Children of only those TA personnel who have completed 10 years of embodied service.

Location and Transportation - AIM is located in Alipore, Kolkata. Howrah & Sealdah Railway Stations both are approximately 6 to 8 Km and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is approximately 20 Km from the Institute.

Library Hall - The self-contained air-conditioned library has a collection of over 7400 books, reputed national and international journals on management and allied disciplines. It also has value-added services like reference, article abstracting, indexing, and current awareness. AIM has an information-rich corporate database like Capitaline Plus, which holds more than 11,000 company data. The library has a good collection of Educational Video Films and Computer-Based Tutorials (CBTs). The library is fully automated with internet accessibility. "LibSys" - an integrated library management software has been used for the automation of all functions and processes. It is accessible through any terminal over LAN. It has the option of Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). Database searches for locating references on any subject or topic can be performed. AIM is an institutional member of the British Council Library, Kolkata, and The American Library, Kolkata.

Computer Lab - AIM has the following four major air-conditioned Computer Labs which can be considered as the nodal points in the area of computer application and management:-

  1. Internet Lab (with 512 KBPS leased line).
  2. Linux Lab.

Bharti Scholarship Scheme - Army Institute of Management, Kolkata, is associated with the Bharti Foundation, a Bharti Enterprise, which supports students of the Institute with the Bharti Scholarship Scheme of Rs.50,000/- per annum. The Scholarship is required to be renewed every year to be eligible for next year. Bharti Foundation has instituted the Bharti Scholarship Scheme with an objective to support bright students on merit-cum-means basis in completing their higher education.

TATA Merit Scholarship Scheme - The TATA Merit Scholarship is sponsored by the TATA Defence Welfare Corpus, Army HQ, New Delhi. Every year two students (belonging to the defense category) from each batch are awarded this scholarship on the basis of Yearly Grade Point Average (YGPA) in the MBA examination.

Weightage for Admission - Weightage for admission to the wards of Gallantry Award Winners and War Widows will be as under:-

  1. Param Vir Chakra - Weightage = 5%.
  2. Ashok Chakra - Weightage = 5%.
  3. Mahavir Chakra - Weightage = 4%.
  4. Kriti Chakra - Weightage = 4%.
  5. Vir Chakra - Weightage = 3%.
  6. Surya Chakra - Weightage = 3%.
  7. Sena Medal (Gallantry only) - Weightage = 1%.

Weightage for Admission - Distinguished Service in War / Conflict / Hostilities

  1. Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM) - Weightage = 3%.
  2. Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) - Weightage  = 2%.
  3. Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) - Weightage  = 1%.

Weightage for Admission - Others

  1. Mention in dispatches - Weightage = 1%.
  2. War Widows - Weightage = 5%.

Management Development Programme - Army Institute of Management (AIM) besides the regular MBA program affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) also conducts MDPs for the executives in the corporate organization. For this, the MDP cell at this Institute was established in the year 2000. Since then, a number of the open house, as well as in-house MDPs, has been conducted through this cell. The open house programs were organized at Taj Bengal; ITC Sonar Bangla; Radisson Fort, Raichak; Hyatt Regency, Kolkata. The In-house programs were conducted at the Institute premises. Army Institute of Management also offers tailor-made training programs for different target groups and companies. AIM has got highly qualified and experienced faculty. Placement - AIM conducts campus interviews for the students. National, as well as Regional Corporate Recruiters, visit the campus during the placement season. Since its inception, AIM has met the expectations of the Industry by placing ninth batches of MBA students in various sectors across the country in diverse functional areas of Marketing, HR & Finance. Many of the alumni today are in Managerial / Executive positions in national and multi-national organizations in India and abroad.

Nostalgia - The Institute organises Nostalgia the annual Alumni Meet in August at the Institute premises.

Inferno - The Inter B-School meet - a two-day affair conducted annually.

Symposia - Symposia are conducted on a regular basis.

Policy for Refund of Fee - All candidates are required to deposit a sum of Rs 10,000/- along with a willingness certificate as Registration Fees. If the candidate joins the Institute, the registration fees will be adjusted against tuition fees.

In case a candidate withdraws from the course, the refund of registration fees and allied charges will be governed as under:-

(A) Candidates who are accepting the offer of admission but fail to register:

  • Withdrawal on or before the registration / Before commencement of the course/ Cut off Date - Full Registration fees less Rs 1000/- as processing charges.

(B) Candidates who register and later withdraw after commencement of the Course but before the last date of Admission (If the seat is filled by another candidate) :

  • Initial Registration Fees - Full Registration fees fewer Rs 1000/- as processing charges.
  • Admission Fees - To be refunded.
  • Security Deposit - To be refunded without interest.
  • Student Association Fees - To be refunded.
  • Tuition Fees and Other Charges - As per actual, a single day of the month will be treated as a month.
  • Hostel and Messing Charges - As per actual, a single day of the month will be treated as a month.

(C) Candidates who register and later withdraw after commencement of the Course but before the last date of Admission (If the seat is not filled by another candidate) :

  • Initial Registration Fees - No refund.
  • Admission Fees - No refund.
  • Security Deposit - To be refunded without interest.
  • Student Association Fees - No refund.
  • Tuition Fees - One-year fees to be retained (Adjusted against security deposit).
  • Hostel Charges - One-year hostel charges to be retained.
  • Messing  - As per actual. A single day of the month will be treated as a month.
  • Other charges - As per actual. A single day of the month will be treated as a month.

(D) Withdrawal of Students After First Year/Subsequent years. If a student withdraws after the first year or later due to any reason whatsoever, a clearance certificate would only be given to him/her after ensuring the following:-

  • Admission Fees - No refund.
  • Security Deposit - To be adjusted against tuition fee for the balance period of the course.
  • Student Association Fees - No refund.
  • Tuition Fees - To be charged for the balance period of the entire course.
  • Hostel Charges - Room rent for the complete duration of the course to be charged.
  • Messing - As per actual. A single day of the month will be treated as a month.
  • Other charges - As per actual. A single day of the month will be treated as a month.
