About National Institute of Design - NID Bangalore

National Institute of Design (NID) Bangalore is a Design Institute established in March 2006. It is also known as NID R&D Campus. It was set up as a joint initiative of and funding from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India

Research Programmes
- The R&D Campus has started research intensive PG Programmes from the academic year 2007-2008. From the academic year 2008-2009, the Campus has also commenced one more research intensive PG Programme.

These are:

  1. PG in Design for Retail Experience.
  2. PG in Design for Digital Experience.
  3. PG in Information and Interface Design.

Location - The campus is located 3 kms from Yeshwantpur railway station on the arterial Tumkur Road (National Highway 4) that connects Bangalore and Mumbai. Click here for Google Map Location.

Transportation - The Campus is easily accessible by public transport buses operated by the BMTC from the junction of Outer Ring Road and Tumkur Road at Gorguntepalya or Peenya on Tumkur Road

Facilities

KMC - Knowledge Management Centre at the NID R&D Campus, Bangalore focuses on collection of books, journals and audiovisual materials on design and other related fields. Apart from this the Centre has access to a large collection of books, student diploma projects, craft documentation, research and other professional project documents through its central collection at Ahmedabad. Some of these resources are available through online access for reference and others through bibliographical annotations.

Laboratories & Studios -  The curriculum is balanced by the learning of design skills with theoretical inputs that find application in design projects and field experiences which place the students in a variety of real life situations to test their knowledge and abilities.

NIDUS - NIDUS is NID's own design outlet. The collection ranges from ceramic to lifestyle and accessory (jewellery and leather accessories, hand bags made of natural fibers), textile and apparel (including stoles, T-shirts, home furnishing etc.) products made of stainless steel, design publications etc All the products showcased and retailed through this outlet are designed by NID alumni, students and faculty members.

O P Jindal Research Chair - O P Jindal Design Research Chair has been set up to conduct design research to promote product innovations in Stainless Steel and to explore stainless steel as a design material. The chair focuses on newer applications of stainless steel in homes, public spaces and architecture.

Asian Paints Colour Research Laboratory - Asian Paints Colour Research Studio is looking at completing 6 to 8 projects in a course of one year. Each project is based on a colour ‘context' and has to be substantiated by research data that defines a ‘widescale' context.

Autodesk Centre of Excellence - The centre provides world class design software, course curriculum and courseware which serve as instruction tools for engineering degree, diploma & certificate courses. Training program for faculties, students & staffs on different Autodesk software's are arranged time to time to enable them to do smooth transition between 2D and 3D design environment .

Research - Research at NID ranges from the application of ergonomics to a variety of industrial situations, transportation, health aids, design for children, conservation of materials, crafts and design for rural needs, applications of new materials and technologies and re-examination of traditional ones.
