About Indian Institute of Plantation Management - IIPM Bangalore

Genesis of the Institution

Realizing the potentialities and needs of modernization of the plantation sector through management education and training, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India constituted a core group in 1990 to set up a strategic institution of management education in the plantation sector. Accordingly a blueprint for the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, (IIPM) Bangalore was prepared. This blueprint envisaged the Institute as a center of excellence, to act as a think tank and an intellectual resource base for the plantation sector. It also envisaged the Institute as an exclusive sectoral school of management based on a new model intensive institute-industry interaction. After the acceptance of the blueprint by the Government, a steering committee of the Ministry of Commerce provided the initial thrust for setting up the Institute. In November 1993, the Institute was registered as an autonomous educational institution of higher learning, under the Karnataka Society Registration Act. It is jointly sponsored by the plantation sector and the Commodity Boards viz. Coffee Board, Tea Board, Rubber Board, Spices Board, and Plantation Associations, viz. UPASI and Indian Tea Association (ITA).

Institute is actively supported by the Industry through its uniquely designed Faculty Finance Support Scheme. Commodity Boards and several leading corporates have instituted chairs at the Institute. Currently, the chairs have been instituted by Tata Tea Limited, Goodricke Group Limited, Williamson Magor Group, and Tata Coffee Limited. In return, the Institute provides intellectual support to the Industry through its research, brainstorming workshops and seminars, etc.

The Institute is today a center of excellence which acts as a think tank and an intellectual resource base for the plantation and associated agri-business sector. It is an exclusive sectoral school of management based on a new model of intensive institute-industry interaction.

Director’s Message

Welcome to the Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM). For more than two decades, IIPM has served as our nation’s flagship comprehensive institution of higher education. We are advancing the institute’s tradition of excellence in Plantation and Associated Agri-business Education through high-quality programs in teaching, research, on-site industry executive training and service. We continue to rank among the nation’s best intensive industry interactive sector school.

IIPM is an endowed organization of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry-GOI and Commodity Boards of India and the plantation industry. Over 39,100 executives, managers, planners, scientists, commodity boards officials, and students around the country and other developing nations have participated in our programs.

Our campus is set in a beautiful landscape with a spectacular view of Bangalore - a highly living environment that encourages interaction and camaraderie. Our distinguished faculty, with extensive ties to leading agri-business and plantation community, are able to bring the best leaders into our programs as visiting faculty and guest speakers.

Over the last 20 years, IIPM as Sectoral School of Agri-business, Commodity, and Plantation (ACP) Management has become the global leader in educating and empowering individuals committed to advancing the public interest in ACP. Our faculty are renowned scholars and accomplished practitioners who are actively engaged in the affairs of the world. Our students are innovators, managers, non-profit executives, agri-business, social & business entrepreneurs, and aspiring leaders – from every age group and every corner of the country. Our unique learning and teaching process crosses the boundaries of nations; of public, private, and civil society; of disciplines; blending of theory and practice. We aspire to excellence because we believe public leadership and the challenges we face are so important that we must insist on the highest standards of analysis with integrity. Today’s problems in ACP require novel approaches and alliances that bring together leaders from government, civil society, and business.

Our primary goal is to become one of the most prominent sectorial business schools in the world. To achieve this goal, we have identified five strategic areas. The faculty, staff, and students of IIPM will endeavour to meet these five goals for the institute: create a strong intellectual foundation in teaching, executive development programs and outreach for community accomplishment; position the Institute to be an international premier research-intensive institution in ACP in association with AACSB and EFMD; embrace entrepreneurial spirit; foster a more diverse and inclusive campus community; and achieve lean-based academic and operational excellence. I invite your suggestions, comments, and insights about ways the “School of Agri-Business Education and Management” can achieve these goals.

I would like to invite you to our campus and explore further with our faculty and students on limitless opportunities that make IIPM a truly special institution.
