About Bharathidasan Institute of Management - BIM

In August 1984, Bharat Ratna Shri. C.Subramanian along with Prof. P.S.Mani Sundaram, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University chaired a Meeting of leading academicians and Industrialists and an idea was born. With this vision in mind, a partnership was signed with BHEL to create the country's first ever Management Institute that would be housed inside an industrial giant. BIM offers one of the most coveted MBA programmes in India. Entry to this course is regulated through a rigorous selection process. BIM has an annual intake of 120 students. BIM enjoys a unique symbiotic relationship with BHEL in terms of academic inputs and continuous industry exposure. BIM's excellence over the years had led the Honourable President Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to choose BIM as an ideal training ground for DRDO Scientists. Senior Executives of BHEL anchor courses, particularly in the areas of Operations Management and Systems. BIM conducts a number of Executive Development Programs for BHEL in the areas of Corporate Finance, Marketing and Organizational Behaviour. Students also take-up various projects offered by BHEL in different functional areas of management. BIM has forged a tie-up with CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) for developing systems and methodologies for finding solutions to problems faced by Small Scale Industries. BIM enjoys the privilege of being associated with DRDO as the sole collaborator for transforming selected scientists of DRDO into technology managers. The institute is run in the premises of the Tiruchirappalli division of BHEL and has been provided with 15 acres on the eastern half of the Khajamalai campus of the university where the new campus is planned to be established.

Location - Bharathidasan Institute of Management is located in Tiruchirapalli (also know as Trichy), Tamil Nadu. It is in the BHEL campus on the Trichy-Thanjavur highway. BIM is about 25 km from Tiruchirapalli Junction / Central Bus Stand.

Transportation:

To reach BIM from Tiruchirapalli Junction travel by a city bus from Tiruchirapalli Jn to the Central Bus Stand. From the Central Bus Stand, Travel by a Thanjavur bound bus. Alight at BHEL Training Centre stop. Journey time will be around 30 to 45 minutes depending on the traffic conditions. From the BHEL Training Centre stop, travel by auto to reach Nehru Nagar where BIM Institute and Hostels are located. Auto fare at the prevailing rates is around Rs.50/- to Rs.60/-. You may travel by taxi to reach BIM. Taxi fare at the prevailing rates is around Rs.150/-.

  • Road Connectivity - Tiruchirapalli is connected by road to Chennai (320 km) and to all major towns in South India by regular bus services.
  • Rail Connectivity - Tiruchirapalli is an important junction in the Southern Railway. It connects to Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tuticorin, Tirupati, Rameswaram, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Cochin, Mangalore and various other cities.
  • Air Connectivity - It has an international airport, and is connected with Chennai (Madras), Singapore, Colombo, Kuwait, Sharjah.

Facilities

Library - The Institute has a library with a comprehensive collection of more than 10,000 volumes, journals, periodicals, Online Databases (like EBSCO, CRISINFAC, IBID, DELNET, INFONET, CMIE, INDIASTAT etc.), video tapes and CDs on Management. Impressive collection of video cassettes, CD's and DVD's on a wide range of managerial issues augment the library. Students also have access to the BHEL main library and the central library of Bharathidasan University. Students can browse the catalogue of our Library, avail the facility to view E-journals, CDs available (in our Library) through PCs allotted for this purpose.

Computer Centre - The Computer Centre, functioning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, provide the students with a comprehensive collection of management related software and business specific database. The Computer Centre and Hostel Rooms are connected to the internet by an exclusive 6 Mbps leased line connection of 2 Mbps each. WI-FI has been enabled in and around classrooms. BIM has recently registered for the MSDN Academic Alliance Programme. This programme provides a complete, inexpensive solution to keep academic labs, faculty and students of BIM on the leading edge of technology. BIM has also recently registered for the ORACLE Academic Initiative. This initiative will provide valuable benefits by way of access to the latest ORACLE software, state-of-the-art Oracle curriculum, faculty training, certification resources and free membership to Oracle Technology Network(OTN)

Classrooms - All classrooms are fully air conditioned and equipped with audio visual aids like LCD projector, Direct Overhead Projector, Television and a Computer with multi media facilities with Internet facility. The Institute also has access to a large centrally air-conditioned auditorium with a capacity to house more than 1500 people.

Hostel - There are separate hostels for men and women. Both the hostels are located within the BHEL complex in the vicinity of the Institute. The hostels (Type-3 quarters having one hall and two rooms with 24 hours internet connectivity) have fully furnished rooms on double occupancy basis. A mess attached to the hostel provides quality vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

The Hostel has:-

  1. Gymnasium.
  2. Flood-light Volley ball and badminton courts.
  3. Playground for students.
  4. Recreation room with TV and Video facilities.
  5. Table tennis facility.
  6. Provision for indoor games like carom and chess.
  7. Reading Room for magazines and newspapers.

The Ladies Hostel also has sports and video facilities separately for ladies. The Ladies Hostel has a computer centre with 24 hours internet connectivity for ladies. The mess and other welfare activities in the hostels are managed solely by student committees.

Management Development Programmes - BIM has developed and conducted a number of in house training programs for BHEL over the years. Apart from BHEL, BIM has also conducted a number of Management Development Programmes for Indian Railways, Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Post, Life Insurance Corporation Of India, Tirumalai Chemicals, TNPL, Cethar Vessels Ltd, State Bank of India, Trec -Step, IMTI to name a few. Students Committees - These include:

  • Placom - Placom is the placement committee of BIM that looks after the entire placement process. Using others aspirations as their inspiration, this committee of BIM helps others realize their dreams. The committee runs under the able stewardship of the Placement Chairman and is lead by the Student Placement Coordinator.
  • SYSCOM - The systems committee of BIM, SYSCOM operates and maintains the whole technological infrastructure. It is not only responsible for the operations of the computer centre but also for the entire IT infrastructure at BIM.
  • Welfarecom - Maintenance of the environment, social welfare activities such as organizing blood donation camps etc. are the responsibilities of this committee.
  • PR COM - It is the job of the PR COM to take BIM to the outside world. Be it any achievement made by a BIMite or any activity that has to be conducted at BIM, the PR COM takes care of all the public relations work associated with it. It makes sure that BIM is taken to the outside world by organizing press meets and also by organizing alumni meets in the various parts of the country. In addition to the above it also maintains a database of the BIM alumni.
  • Sports com - Sports at BIM is not just confined to the odd cricket match or a table tennis match. They are full-fledged day and night events replete with flood lights and commentary. It is the responsibility of sports com to organize such activities. This committee besides organizing such encounters by means of basketball, volleyball and cricket tournament also has the responsibility of maintenance of the overall sports infrastructure at BIM.
  • Mess com - The students mess at BIM is being managed by the students themselves. The students manage activities right from the procurement stage till the selection and changes in the mess menu. The committee that has been given the responsibility of looking after all such mess activities is the mess com.
  • Kalaikom - The hectic life on campus is studded with fun, and fun in a way of real and refreshing enjoyment, all organized and conducted by the cultural committee of BIM - The Kalaikom. Foxtrot, Dandiya Nite, BIM Talkies, Sangam and all the dance floors and countless parties were a grand success, thanks to Kalaikom.

Student Clubs - These include:

  1. BISMARC - As the marketing club of BIM, BISMARC has set itself the broad objective of providing additional value to the students along with regular academics. For this purpose, the club regularly organizes multi-focal marketing lab sessions namely AdLab, Biz-Sabha, Resource-Lab and Gyan-Lab.
  2. ZETETICA - It  provides both members and non-members an active orientation to the HR domain through workshops, seminars, guest lectures, conferences and other games. They deliberate on the latest dimensions of HR practices, and keep the students constantly updated.
  3. RADIANCE - The Social Consciousness Club of BIM, provides a channel through which students of BIM can show their sense of responsibility towards the society. It organizes activities for the good of the underprivileged such as reading and activity sessions in orphanages.
  4. Fin club - The Finance Club tries to analyse the dynamic nature of Finance as a subject and a sector. It helps the students appreciate the importance of financial acumen in today's competitive environment. The policy analysis sessions and the monthly newsletter 'Finalyst' combined with the lectures and workshops on the various fields of finance facilitate a firm grasp of finance for all the students.
  5. Quest - The BIM Quiz Club, having understood the constant need for improvements in the everlasting quest for perfection, has been committed to enriching the knowledge of the students of BIM through various quiz programmes and competitions. The dazzling streak of success enjoyed by BIM's quizzers owes a lot to the service rendered by Quest in inculcating the competitive advantage in the students.

Career counselling - BIM offers career counselling to all the students to help them understand themselves, developing the SWOT for an individual, identifying a career where they would be best suited. The programme also identifies the steps to be taken by the students to excel in their chosen fields. The objectives of the career counselling programme are:-

  • Emphasis on Career Management as a life long process.
  • Honing the skills of students in making the right choices in their professional careers.

Placements - BIM curriculum and educational processes are constantly upgraded to achieve effectiveness through excellence. CECMAR - The Centre for Contemporary Management Research is aimed at providing a stage for scholarly work in a splendid plethora.

It's activities include :

Research - At present research is being conducted in the following areas:-

  1. Consumer Behaviour.
  2. Brand Management.
  3. Emotions in the workplace.
  4. E-Marketing.
  5. Software Project Management.
  6. Micro Finance.

Real time projects - There are three local projects that are handled by the students at present:

  • Revival of "Trichinopoly Cigar" brand.
  • Optimization of Steel roll mill.
  • Poverty and gender Equality Index.

The team is also actively involved in interacting with UGC, AICTE and other Foreign Universities in collaborating with them for research projects & student exchange process.

Case Folios - CECMAR’s yet another initiative, the case folio. It is a compilation of the various business problems, identified by our students in their summer projects in the form of case studies. A case-study formulation workshop is conducted for the benefit of the students. The workshop will help and encourage students in the preparation of Case study. The compiled case studies will be published.
