About Institution
It was established in 1875 by the Indian Muslims and in 1920 it was granted a status of Central University by an Act of Indian Parliament. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, a great social reformer of his age felt the need for modern education and started a school in 1875 which later became the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College and finally Aligarh Muslim University in 1920.
Many prominent Muslim leaders, and Urdu writers and scholars of the subcontinent have graduated from the University. It is located in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Modelled on the University of Cambridge, it was among the first institutions of higher learning set up during the British Raj.

In some courses, seats are reserved for students from SAARC and Commonwealth countries. The University is open to all irrespective of caste, creed, religion or gender. Aligarh is situated at a distance of 130 km, South-East of Delhi on Delhi-Calcutta Railway and Grand Trunk route

Facilities and Campus
Hostels - A special feature of the University is its residential character with most of the staff and students residing on the campus. AMU is truly representative of the country's multi-religious, multi-racial and multi-lingual character. At Aligarh, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Christians come from all parts of the country - right from Kashmir to Kerala and from Gujarat to Assam - bringing with them different cultural traditions. They live here on the campus in the same rooms, dine on the same tables, play on the same grounds, and share together the joys and concerns of residential life. This traditional and harmonious corporate living has made a major contribution to the development of a broad, cosmopolitan and secular attitude in Aligarh. There are 16 Halls of residence comprising 69 hostels. A Hall of Residence is a cluster of hostels administered by a Provost and a number of teacher wardens who look after different hostels.
Different Schools and colleges
Apart from the collection of orientalia the Library has a vast collection of books in English belonging to different subjects especially in Science & Technology. The library provides the whole university campus wide access to online journals through a well-equipped Computer Lab. Digital Resources on many subjects are made accessible through a Digital Resource Centre, established in January 2009 in the Library.
INFLIBNET - A University Grant Commission Undertaking has been providing about 2000 online full text journals and some very important databases like Chemical Abstract, Biological Abstract and Royal Society of Chemistry to AMU since January 2004 free of cost.
