Held on : 22nd March

The World Water Day is an international day of observance and action to draw attention to the plight of the more than 1 billion people world wide that lack access to clean, safe drinking water. Clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other lifeforms. World Water Day aims to increase people's awareness of the water's importance in all aspects of life. It is held on March 22 each year. The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution. The First World Water Day was first observed in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21. Each year, one of various UN agencies involved in water issues takes the lead in promoting and coordinating international activities for World Water Day. A number of NGOs promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats have used World Day for Water as a time to focus public attention on the critical water issues of our era. World Water Day is still a relatively unknown event in spite of the support of the UN and efforts by leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and committed individuals.

World Water Day's main symbol is the shape of a water drop in the UN's colour blue. Photographs of water being used or in rivers, reservoirs, lakes or seas are widely displayed on this occasion. A new theme is allocated to each different year for World Water Day. Previous year's themes have been - Sanitation (2008), Coping with Water Scarcity (2007) and Coping with Water Scarcity (2007). On this day Events are organized on or around this day to increase people's awareness of water's importance in environment, agriculture, health and trade. World Water Day activities include visual art, theatrical and musical celebrations of water, educational events on the importance of clean water and protecting water resources, campaigns and events to raise money for access to clean and affordable water, special broadcasts on television and radio and the Internet, walks, runs, and swimming competitions.
