Poster Designing

A poster is very useful means of making a mass/public announcement or appeal using a notice, advertising a product or bringing about awareness on any issue of public interest.

A poster is always visually very attractive and eye catching besides being easily readable from a certain distance. It is usually put up on notice or bulletin boards in the organization and walls etc in the public or private places. Posters are also extensively used by political parties, religious organizations, artists, event organizers, film makers, advertisement agencies,

NGO’s, government departments like Public Relations Department, Health and Family Welfare Department, Education Department and Environment Protection and Conservation Agencies and Groups etc.

Essentially a very brief communication with a powerful visual and a powerful message, a poster is always prepared with a particular target audience in mind. It very clearly mentions the theme or the topic, the schedule of an event and the occasion for it. It is usually an appeal for awareness or support, help or action ; a warning or a caution. Many times a poster takes the form of an invitation, for ex. Posters for carnivals, fates fashion shows, sales, exhibitions etc.

Visuals are of a great help in enhancing the overall impact of a poster on readers mind as it is aptly said that a picture is worth 1000 words. One interesting thing in making a poster is that the students have full freedom to use any style and size of lettering. Usually one full page should be used for writing a poster the bottom line is that the  goal should be achieved i.e. poster should be  attractive as well as clear in communicating the intended message in an easily readable manner. Remember to put your poster in a box that can help to attract the attention of the read little more than usual.

Basic elements that a poster should have in it are:-

  • Theme/ Topic/ Event
  • Purpose and/ or Occasion
  • Date, time and place
  • A message of appeal, awareness, caution, warning, invitation
  • Slogans, Catchy Phrases
  • Name of the individual/ organization issuing it
