The National Assessment and Accreditation Council acronym as NAAC is a brain child of UGC that was established in 1992 to address the issue of deterioration in the quality of higher education in the country. Although established in 1992 it was opened in 1994 (Headed by a Director Presently Prof. H.A. Ranganath) with its headquarters at Bangalore as an autonomous national accreditation body. An outcome of National Policy in Education (1986) NAAC is responsible to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country with special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India

There have been voices of concern that the country has permitted the mushrooming of institutions of higher education with irrelevant and fancy programme and substandard facilities and consequent dilution of standards in spite of having built-in regulatory mechanisms to maintain the quality of education. Thus the main responsibility of NAAC is To make quality the defining element of higher education in India through a combination of self and external quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance initiatives.
For accomplishing its task in an effective manner the NAAC primarily assesses the quality of institutions of higher education that volunteer for the process, through an internationally accepted methodology.
