But some of the disciplines of the engineering like Genetic Engineering are considered to be relatively new. Genetic Engineering which is considered to be a part of Biotechnology involves a wide range of techniques that are used in changing the genetic material in the DNA code in a living organism. The responsibility work of a genetic engineer involves extracting the DNA out of one organism, changing it using chemicals or radiation and subsequently putting it back into the same or a different organism. Genetic engineering has specializations related to plants, animals and human beings. Genetic engineering in plants and animals may be to improve certain natural characteristics of value, to increase resistance to disease or damage and to develop new characteristics etc. It is used to change the color, size, texture etc of plants otherwise known as GM (Genetically Modified) foods. GE in humans can be to correct severe hereditary defects by introducing normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones.

Eligibility to join an engineering course
1. Educational Qualification.
To be eligible for joining a Degree course in Genetics Engineering one should be 10+2 Class pass or appeared, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as genetics as part of the biology.
Step 1
Eligible candidates have to appear in the entrance tests conducted by various state universities ( like PU, KU, Delhi University etc) of the state, Central Govt Organizations like AIEEE and independent institution(like IIT’s , BITS Pilani etc) present at various places in the India. Candidate get admission into these collages for four year degree Programme according to their merit in the examination taken and stream of their interest as selected by them.
Step 2
After successful completion of degree course and completion of the required internship the candidate is ready to join Government, Semi Government or Privates sector as Assistant engineer.
As another option one can opt of higher qualification as M.E followed by Ph.D. and can go form research work or for academics. It all depends upon once priorities in their life.
The more competitive one’s can go for Indian Engineering Services exam to get to the top most technical post of the Government of India.
Remunerations after becoming Genetic engineer
Degree engineer in private sector can get any where near 15,000-20,000 as starter and can go any where as high as 1,00,000 per month with experience and ability in their organization. Where as in Government sector they do not get as much as in private sector. But they are suitably compensated by other perks and allowances in addition to housing facilities, medical expenses as well as free/concessional air passages for their immediate family members and dependants (as LTC) above all the status attached with the Government sector posts.
