Body of a living being is the most sophisticated as well as the simplest working machine on this earth. Like any other man made machine this also gets wear and tear and need repairs at times. This wear and tear can be to any part of the body but if this is done to the most important part i.e mind of the human being it becomes all the more difficult to get it cure. And the person who is apt to do this is known as Psychiatrist.

There was a time when there were few instances of mental problems it was because of the simple life style with few necessities and combined family system prevalent at that time. But with the passing time and materialization of anything and everything life has become quite complicated with desire to acquire everything. This materialization has made the life style quite hectic causing a lot of mental stress thereby leads to psychiatric problems. Independent family system has added more to the problems because now there is nobody with whom one can share his problems to reduce stress.

With the changed living conditions, lifestyles and high-stress levels there has been an increase in the mental diseases affecting the large population all over the world and specially the third world including Indian subcontinent, thereby making the role of a Psychiatrist even more important in today’s context several millions suffering from changed lifestyle diseases like hypertension and mental stress, India is set to fight a battle against these diseases for which it will require a large and efficient team of dedicated Psychiatrist. So there is a good scope for today’s younger generation to make their carrier in this field to claim not only good monetary fortunes but also high respect in the society.

So to be a Psychiatrist requires a lot of hard work, dedication and spirit to sever the society although with some remuneration in lieu of providing its services. Besides one should have discipline, patience, commitment to excel in their respective field and self-confidence. If you have all these qualities in you then you are fit for being a Psychiatrist.

Eligibility to be a Psychiatrist
Doctors who have successfully completed the entire MBBS programme of study are eligible for specialization in psychiatry.

Process to be a Psychiatrist

Step 1

There are two options

1. They may either do a postgraduate course (MD) in psychiatry The MD course is of three years' duration.

2. A diploma in psychiatry (DPM) is the other option to adopt this field of medicine
The diploma course is of two years.

3. Besides the MD and the DPM, there is a third option for study. The National Board of Examinations conducts a programme called Diploma of National Board Exam (DNB). The DNB is considered to be equivalent to a MD degree.

The academic curriculum for the MD programme includes psychology, anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the brain, neurology and neurosurgery. Special aspects of psychology such as child psychiatry, community psychiatry, social psychiatry, forensic psychiatry and preventive psychiatry are also taught in the programme. The course also includes practical training at mental hospitals.

Remunerations after becoming a psychatirst

There is a lot of scope for those who are joining Psychiatric as carrier in the present scenario. Apart from joining a private or government hospital as an Assistant Psychiatrist, younger Professionals can find lucrative placements with huge salaries in corporate hospitals With starting salary anywhere between Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 depending upon the competence of the individual doctor There is a lot of money in private practice as well and it only gets better for candidates as they win the trust of the patients and the goodwill is spread by word of mouth to attract more patients to the clinic.

A couple of years dedicated work and some experience along with a masters degree could lead a Psychiatrist to a pay package of nearly Rs one-12 lac per month There is no upper ceiling to the earnings of a competent and capable Psychiatrists.
