15 January 1980 was a red letter day in the history of the Indian Army when the then Chief Of Army Staff announced the involvement of the Army to promote education for the wards of Army Personnel.

Army Welfare Education Organisation was created and was registered as AWES under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 on 29 April 1983. Army Welfare Education Society is a non profit welfare organisation.

Army School is an English Medium, Co-educational institution affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi.

Vision

The Vision of Army Welfare Education Society is ‘Quality Education at Affordable Cost’. To ensure a holistic development of the Child Army Welfare Education Society has launched a series of initiatives. These are:

  • Herbal Gardens in every school for awareness of medicinal plants

  • Games, sports, hobby centers and activity clubs
  • Life-saving skills
  • Adventure Camps

Admission Rules

  • The wards of serving Army Personnel may seek admission anytime of the year.
  • Defence personnel from Navy, Airforce, Ex-Servicemen etc. will be given preference over civilians.
  • 20% admission may be given to civilian children, if vacancy exists.

Activities in School

The School organizes following activities to encourage the holistic development in the students:

Computer Aided Learning (CAL)

CAL is conducted for all classes. The teachers prepare computer aided lessons in consonance with the prescribed curriculum. The computer labs are well equipped with sufficient computers connected through LAN. The school has an extensive collection of CDs / Slides which are used by the subject teachers to substantiate their teaching. A CAL software has been recently procured for the teaching of Maths & Science in all classes. Four classrooms have been equipped with TVs and Computers to facilitate the learning.

Co-Curricular Activities:

A wide range of co-curricular activities are conducted throughtout the year. The English Week, Hindi Week and celebration of important festivals are conducted with great fervour. Inter-house activities like Recitation, Slogan-Writing, Essay Writing, Poster-Making, Calligraphy, Drawing and Quiz Competitions are conducted with hearty participation from students. To inculcate rational thinking, the debates are organized to view the burning and contemporary topics. To develop the creativity and motor skills of children, many craft and SUPW activities are organised.

Talks & Career Guidance:

For creating awareness amongst the students, talks by different experts are organised from time to time. Talks on Career counselling for classes X, XI and XII are given by professionals in the fields of Defence Services, Aviation Services, Banking and Finance, Hotel Management & Fashion Industry. Various workshops and career fairs are organised for the available professional options of different streams. Also the information regarding various admission forms as well as courses and competitions is provided by the experts.

Counselling:

The School has a counsellor for helping the students to rediscover and understand themselves. Encouraging them to find positive solutions to their problems. Individual counseling is done for the problems, which go deeper with confidentiality

Games & sports:

The Army School gives abundant encouragement to 'Games & Sports' as we believe that Physical Education is an integral part of a child's education. A number of inter-house competitions in games like Football, Cricket, Basketball, Kho-Kho are held throughout the year. Mass P.T, drill marching and training for various outdoor and indoor games is provided. Students have participated in various inter-school contests like Cross-country Race, Inter-School Football Competition, Athletic Meets etc. They have brought glory to the school by winning several trophies at National and State Level in Athletics.

Most of the seminars and workshops are held during the last days of Summer Vacation, which are alloted by AWES for such programmes.

Conclusion:

Most of the schools have an added advantage of moulding a child over 10 to 12 years. In contrast, we get our students, at best only for a couple of years- sometimes even less. In this short span of time we have to ensure success to give them a bright future. It is more challenging task to be able to achieve this. It requires a lot of commitment, devotion and hard work on the part of the staff and we are trying our best.

Facilities in Schools

Computer Centre

A well equipped computer centre which is extensively used by all the students and departments apart from prescribed syllabus.

Audiovisual Room

It is an extremely busy hub in the school equipped with LCD Projector, Scanner, Printer, T V and many educational CD’s, slides and cassettes.

Library

A store house of knowledge which has a good collection of Reference books, CD’s, magazines and newspapers. It is well stocked with a complete range of Reading material to meet the requirement of the syllabi as well as for entertainment.

Science Laboratories

Well maintained laboratories of Physics, Chemistry and Biology enable the students to overcome the fear of the subject and enjoy its power of application.

Auditorium

The School has a small auditorium to conduct the Workshops, Seminars, Talks And Competitions which are organised frequently.

Swimming Pool

The School offers to learn the swimming skills with the facility of an Olympic size swimming pool.

Sports Ground

We have a huge play field where students are trained to play various games. Extra coaching is given to the students with potential in field of sports. Special emphasis on all round development of the child.

Canteen

The School Canteen provides the children with stationary items and light eatables.

Bus Services

The School also provides bus facility to the students.

Achievements:

Following have been the achievements of the school in 2007-2008:

Limca Book of Quiz: Devesh Khara, XI Commerce and Anirudh Chandrashekhar, XII Commerce stood first in ‘Limca Book of Quiz Competition’ among 47 Schools from Mumbai region.

Inter-school Rugby Tournament: Army School Rugby team won the Interschool Rugby tournament 2007 organised by Bombay Gymkhana. Ashish Yadav XII Science won First prize and the Trophy.

CBSE cluster IX Football Tournament 2008-09: Army School Mumbai secured third position among 36 schools from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Daman and Diu.

Inter Army School Debate Competition (Southern Command): Army School Mumbai secured in second position.

On-the-Spot English Essay Writing Competition (Class XI & XII): Harini Subbaraman of class XII (Science) stood first for group ‘D’.

CBSE Board Examination 2007-08: Varun Verma and Akansha Sharma received special certificates for being listed in first one thousand students. Varun Verma secured 100% in Maths.

CBSE National Athletic Meet 2007-08: Ramdas Kadam of Class IX stood 4th in - Boys under 16 and received Bronze Medal.

32nd Bombay YMCA open state level Annual Athletic Meet 2007:

  • Ajay Singh of class XII Commerce stood second and received silver medal in Javelin Throw.
  • Rohit Balyan of class XII Commerce stood second and received silver medal in shotput.
  • Ramdas Kadam of class IX stood first and received Gold Medal in 800 m and 1000m running.
  • Ramdas Kadam also stood second and received Silver Medal in Long Jump.

Cyber Olympiad 2007: Niharika Mukherjee of class VI won first prize and received Gold Medal and a Laptop with merit certificate.

Inter School I.T. Quiz Competition: Jayant Ramanand of class XI Science and M N Navy of class XI Science won first prize and received a Laptop and medals.
