Access Economics

Access is an accelerative process that fosters interactions, contacts and exchanges among people, businesses and nations. In 2006, the Centre for Science, Technology, and Economic Development in the United States, conducted a study to define the drivers and benefits of Access and to assess and quantify the impact of Access on economic growth and personal well-being. The analytical framework evolved in its study was called ‘The Power of Access’, which was also known by the title, ‘How Greater Access Is Changing The World: A Landmark Study on the Relevance of Access to People, Businesses and Nations’. The study brought out the Access framework consising of the Access Model, which expresses the function of Access as an econometric equation; the “Access Cycle”; and the "Access Index," that ranks 75 nations based on their performance in 22 metrics, including transportation infrastructure; telecommunications networks; trade policy; and news, media and information services.

The Centre’s original study and subsequent research was sponsored by FedEx Corporation, which has incorporated the Access concept into its corporate thought and leadership.
