About Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University - PSTU

Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University is one of the few language universities in the country. It was established as "Telugu University" on 2nd December 1985 through an Act of Legislation (Act No. 27 of 1985)  with head quarters at Hyderabad and campuses at Sri Sailam and Rajahmundry. Later in the year 1989 the Siddhendra Kalakshetram at Kuchipudi merged with the University. It is well known for imparting higher education in traditional, dance, literature, history, language, fine arts with special recognition and cultural standards. It is named after “Amarajevi” Pottisreeramulu who has laid down his life for the formation of Telugu state. The School of Folk and Tribal Lore was established at Warangal during the year 1994. This University was founded with the broad objectives of serving the cause of the Telugu people, both within the State and outside. For this purpose, the state government has merged the Sahitya, Sangeetha, Nataka, Nritya and Lalitha Kala Academies, International Telugu Institute and Telugu Bhasha Samithi into the University. Thus, the University was established to function as a central organization for teaching and research in Language and Literature, History and Culture, Fine Arts and Performing Arts, religion and philosophy of the Telugu speaking people. It caters mainly to the needs of the Telugu language speaking people. Its aim is to preserve and propagate all aspects of Telugu culture, including literature and languages. It strives to inculcate a sense of identity in them as citizens of India and as responsible representatives of Andhra Pradesh. This University was renamed as Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University in the year 1998. The University Grants Commission has recognized the University as fit to receive financial grants since 2nd May 1990.

PSTU is located in the historic city of Hyderabad. Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University follows Semester System for all regular courses. There is both internal and external evaluation for the degree and P.G. courses. Admissions are through Merit and /Entrance examinations. Students are evaluated in both theory and practical for the Fine Arts and Performing Arts.  Innovative and need based courses like Telugu, journalism, History, dance, Fine Arts, Jyotisham, Performing Arts, Social Science, Folk and Comparative Studies are provided in the university. The university has eighteen Departments spread over five campuses, i.e. Hyderabad, Rajahmundry, Sri Sailam, Warangal and Kuchipudi. The University has teaching and research in all these campuses. It has three buildings in the main campus, Hyderabad. The two buildings situated at Public Gardens host the major teaching departments and administrative sections. These also include Publication wing, Extensions Services department and a branch library. The second building at Vidyanagar hosts the central Library and Boys’ Hostels. The students have a most comfortable stay in well furnished hostels in Vidyanagar and Bachupalli kalaprangnam spread out in 100 acres.  The University has recently acquired 100 acres of land for the construction of new campus at Bachupally in Hyderabad. Construction work has been initiated. The Rajahmundry, Sri Sailam and Kuchipudi Campuses contain teaching, administrative and hostel buildings.

Facilities

Computer Cell -  The Computer Cell is offering three months certificate course in "Computer Applications & Office Administration". The eligibility for admission into the course is S.S.C. or its equivalent qualification. This course is intended to train candidates who are seeking employment as Office Assistants.  This course is also useful for the candidates who are employed in different corporate, private and Govt. offices. Apart from these, the course is helpful for those who want to learn basic skills in operating personal computers and using internet (browsing, email etc).  The fee for this course is RS.1, 500/- and classes will be held for 5 days in a week from 3 to 5 P.M. (1st batch), and 5.45 to 7.45 P.M. (2nd batch). UGC has sanctioned Information Networking (INFONET) scheme to the University. Under this scheme Internet through broadband with 128 kbps is available in the University. All the departments in the University are connected through LAN. With this Internet is made available to all the Departments. The cell has also compiled an 'English - Telugu Electronic Dictionary'

Library - The Central library has equipped with rich collection comprising of about one-lakh books among which 55,000 are Telugu, 43,000 English and 5000 of other Indian languages. It subscribes to about 150 subject journals in Telugu and English. Library is also maintaining about 10,000 back volumes of journals. In addition, the Library has acquired rare and unique collection of Palm leaves, Mackenzie manuscripts, letters of C.P Brown, microfilms of Telugu dailies Krishna patrika for 40 years (1902-1942), and Andhra patrika for 26 years (1914-1940). Other facilities include to digitize all the significant Literary, Cultural, Artistic and Scientific works of mankind to preserve, conserve and to be made freely available. The Universal Digital Library is an Universal project (http://www.ulib.org) spear head by Prof. Raj Reddy of Carnegie Mellon University, Pitts burg, USA. As a part of The UDL project "Digital Library of INDA" (DLI) was launched in India. The INFLIBNET program was also started in PSTU Library. The Library has also acquired rare and unique collection of 31 Palm Leaves (21 Palm Leaves donated by Sri. G.V.B. Narasimha Rao, Bodapadu, East Godavari District, 3 Palm Leaves donated by Sri Yannam Venkata Reddy, Veldanda, Mahaboobnagar District). About 419 Mackenzie manuscripts and 10 volumes of C.P. Brown letters.

SC, ST Cell - SC, ST Cell came into existence in July 1999. The Cell works for the welfare of the Teaching, Non Teaching & Fourth Class Employees belonging to SC & ST. The cell conducts various activities to the students with the grants from UGC. As part of this the cell conducts Remedial coaching for SC, ST &  BC students. The Cell organized dalit seminars in memory of eminent personalities belonging to SC & ST.

NSS - One Unit is working under National Service Scheme in the P.S. Telugu University. It conducted programmes on various important dates regarding  Social issues like health, national integration etc., in which, the students and staff as well as subject experts from outside participated actively.

Documentation Centre - The University has a Documentation Centre, which does video recordings of interviews with eminent personalities above 70 years of age, who have made great contribution to the cultural, social and political eminence of the State.

UGC Cell - The UGC Cell has been working independently  under the control of a Co-ordinator, belonging to academic community.  The UGC cell deals with the matters pertaining to UGC and other agencies.  The UGC Cell has been looking after Plan and Non-Plan Grants. The UGc has several schemes  under Non-Plan Grants viz: Un-assigned Grants, Refresher Courses, Major Research Projects, JRF, Research Award, Research Associateships etc. The UGC releases this amount only after we spend the amounts and furnish the utilization certificates.

Research Activities - The University Grants Commission floated the Scheme of Emeritus Fellowship in order to provide an opportunity to the highly qualified and experienced superannuated Teachers of Universities, Colleges and Institutions approved under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act who have been actively engaged in Research and Teaching programmes of the Universities /Institutions deemed Universities in the preceding years to undertake research, without any restriction of position or pay scales. UGC also gives away research awards and career awards. It also conducts various research activities in different schools of study.

Museum - Telugus through the Ages Museum has three Galleries. The first Gallery History through Paintings has 52 oil paintings. The second Gallery, Contemporary Art has 124 canvas paintings by eminent artists. The third one, Portrait Gallery displays 220 portraits of Telugu luminaries in various fields and 211 Nataratnas, distinguished stage artists acquired from Dr. Mikkilineni Radhakrishna Murthi. Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University has brought out a monograph on the oil paintings displayed in the First Gallery. These paintings are master pieces by distinguished artists acquired on the eve of the First World Telugu Conference. The monograph is available for sale in PS Telugu University, Public Gardens, Hyderabad.

Publications - Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University has a major activity in its Publication scheme. There is a separate Publication Division, publishing books for readers at various levels. It has introduced a new scheme of publishing old and rare books which have not been in the market for several decades and which have immense value in the modern context too. This scheme has already taken roots with the publication of old books on Andhra history. The university has published 250 books till now, and more than 50 books are under print. The books published include rare and standard books in all creative genres, like poetry, drama, essay and fiction as well as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, translations, monographs on great persons etc.   

University Awards - Under Visishta Puraskaram, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, honours one great personality every year from the fields of literature, Art and innovators in any area of knowledge with Visishta Puraskara. It also gives away Endowment Awards and Sahitya Puraskaras

Telugu Vaani - Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University is Publishing "Telugu Vaani ", a Tri-Monthly Magazine. More than  25 issues of Telugu Vaani have been brought out so far.

Concessions - Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University issues nearly 6000 Railway concessions every year to the Artists belonging to Dance, Music, Folk Arts, Drama and Magic of different cultural organizations.

Grants - Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University sanctions Rs. 8 lakhs towards printing of books for 120 members in the fields of Telugu Language, Literature, Culture, History and Arts every year. And also providing grants to other Indian language  Books having information about Telugu Language and Literature.

Auditorium - Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University is having 265 seated Auditorium. University is using the Auditorium for its programmes and is also giving  to Literary and Cultural Organizations for their programmes. Rent for Four Hours session Rs. 1500/-

Art Gallery
- As a long cherished dream of Artists in the State, an Art Gallery was established in Lalitha Kala Kshetram Campus, Public Gardens Hyderabad to exhibit the paintings of artists with all modern facilities inclusive of Air Conditioning.

Hostels - The University maintains Hostels in Hyderabad, Rajahamundry and Srisailam Campuses for the benefit of its students. The University takes all precautions to provide all facilities at the Hostels.
