About Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology

Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, Hisar, was established on October 20,1995 by an Act of the Legislature of the State of Haryana. It was formally inaugurated on November 1, 1995. It is named after Guru Jambheshwar Ji Maharaj, a saint environmentalist of 15th century. Keeping in view the nature of courses offered at the university and the mandate for which it had been established the name of the university has  been changed as Guru Jambheshwar university of Science & Technology. It is well connected by rail and road. Hisar is one of the principal cities catering to the administrative and commercial needs of huge rural population. The University is situated over a sprawling area of about 372 acres. The campus is laid out with picturesque landscape, numerous buildings of various sizes and wide road network. Approximately 200 acres of area has been developed with all providing modern facilities such as road networks, sewerage pipe lines for water, electricity supply and parks have been developed at various places. The University has seven teaching blocks. There are 149 residential houses of different types for various categories of employees. Construction work for Staff quarters and Sewer line is under progress. The University offers a wide range of academic programmes/ courses at post-graduate and under-graduate level.  All these courses are designed by taking into consideration the special needs of the market and the Industry and the Model Curricula supplied by the UGC/AICTE.

Location  - The University is situated at Hisar, at about 166 Kms. from Delhi on Delhi-Rohtak-Hisar-Sirsa- Fazilka National Highway (NH-10) and at a distance of about 230 Kms. from Chandigarh on NH-65. Click here for Google Map Location

Facilities

Credit Based Systems of Examinations - The University has switched over to credit based system for all courses w.e.f. 2006-07. The prominent features of the credit based system are the process of continuous evaluation of a student's performance, and flexibility to allow the students to progress at an optimum pace suited to individual ability and convenience, subject to fulfilling minimum requirement for continuation.

Hostels - There are seven Hostels (Three for boys and Three for girls and a Working Women Hostel) in the University, which have residential capacity of about 1600 residents. The hostels are provided with Colour Televisions, Chess-Board, Carom Board, Chinese Checker Board, Badminton, Table-Tennis, Newspaper Stands etc. for recreation and entertainment of the students within the hostel premises. All the hostels have been provided with modern facilities such as Internet Electric Geyser, Music System, Telephone Facilities, Desert Coolers, Water Coolers fitted with aqua guards, insect killers and adequate play grounds. The Girls Hostels have also been provided with physical fitness machines for jogging, cycling & abdominal exerciser. Those seeking admission in hostel will have to fill up separate form in the hostel prospectus. The prospective hostellers are also required to undergo a medical examination.

University Library - The Library has two Reading Halls with a total capacity of 250 seats. One reading hall with a seating capacity of 80 has been provided for Periodical Section where all the journal are displayed and back volumes are made available. This hall has a separate reading area  for Newspapers and Magazines.  The other reading hall with a capacity of 80 seats has been provided to the students for study from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. During examination days this reading hall remains open round the clock (24 hours).
 
Features of the Library

  1. The Library at present has a total collection of 70860 books.
  2. The Library has undertaken subscription 152 Indian Journals and 37 Foreign Journals in the year 2008.  
  3. The Library subscribes 62 magazines and 20 newspapers to cater to the general information needs of the University.
  4. The Library has provided list of journals of 14 publishers available online to all the Chairpersons of the Departments for the use by the Faculty and the students.
  5. The Library renewed one on-line database 'PROWESS'.
  6. The Library has also subscribed one database Emerald Management Xtra 175.
  7. Using the Integrated Library Computer Software "LibSys", the complete database of Library holdings of books.
  8. The Library provides On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) facility to the members to search and know the status of the reading material available in the Library. The Internet facility is provided in University Computer & informatics Centre located in the University Library.
  9. The library is a member of INFLIBNET, 'Information Library Network' which undertakes the subscription of e-journals and makes them available in the consortium mode. At present under consortium access of full text journals of 14 publishers is available to the academic community of the University.
  10. The Library is also a member of INDEST (Indian National Digital Library in Engineering, Science and Technology) Consortium set up by the Human Resource Ministry through which e-journals on Science & Technology including IEEE are made available.
  11. The University Library is institutional member of American Library.
  12. The Library provides Book Bank facility to the Undergraduate, Post Graduate and SC/ST students of the University.

UCIC -  University Computer & Informatics Centre formerly University Computer Centre (UCC), has computing equipments of latest configuration and Internet connectivity of 2 Mbps lease line through ERNET India and 2/8 Mbps Broadband connection through BSNL. The UCIC has a network of 135 computers with Internet facility. On-line journal facility is also available under INFLIBNET, a UGC programme. All the on-line journals like Annual Reviews, Blackwell Publishing, Cambridge University Press, Oxfored University Press, Project Muse, Springer Link, Taylor & Francis, ACS, AIP, APS, IOP, JSTOR, RSC,ISID, JCCC and IEEE are available to students, research scholars and teachers in the UCIC.

EDUSAT - The UCIC has also installed the EDUSAT (the Education Satellite) facility, a powerful communication tool for emulating virtual classroom in an effective manner. This facility is very helpful to faculty members to prepare computer aided teaching/learning materials for quality education. The same satellite transmission facility is provided to the students to attend lecturers and obtain study material from transmission sites like IGNOU, UGC, CEIT, CEC & AICTE.

Haryana School of Business - To leverage the synergistic capabilities of two separate but interdependent departments namely the Department of Business Management and Department of Business Economics, Haryana School of Business has been formed. Combined sanctioned strength of teaching positions of faculty of management is 30. The professionally competent and experienced faculty presents an ideal mix of senior and young academicians with 07 Professors, 08 Associate Professors (Readers), and 15 Assistant Professors (Lecturers). It is further reinforced by over 31 visiting Professors from diverse academic and professional institutes of repute in the field. In addition, there are more than 50 Ph.D. scholars including 10 full-time Research Fellow/ Associate to uphold the research activities in the respective area of specializations. The school has the status of an autonomous constituent institute of the university headed by the Director under the guidance, direction and supervision of the Board of Governors and the Vice-Chancellor. The School serves the critical function of generating, consolidating, preserving and disseminating knowledge related to the business management in this part of the country. It also act as leader in the teaching, research and consulting in the area of business management. It makes available highly specialized manpower leadership in dominant areas of business management.

Scholarship - There are a number of schemes for all categories.

Admission for Foreign Students

Rules and Regulation regarding admission:

  • 15% supernumerary seats of the total sanctioned intake in each course will be created for foreign students. 1/3rd  of 15% i.e. 5% of the total seats shall be reserved for the children of Indian workers in the Gulf countries. This is in accordance with the letter received from the AICTE.
  • The admission will be open for foreign students in all the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes available.
  • The admission of other foreign students will be made on merit on the basis of  the qualifying examination. They will not be required to appear in entrance tests.
  • The University has signed MoU with EDCIL to recruit foreign students for various courses on behalf of the University. Efforts will also be made to recruit students directly by the University.
  • A uniform fee of US $ 2000 per annum will be charged from a foreign student. This fee will not include the boarding and lodging charges and medical insurance, which will be on actual basis. There will be no limit of seats for foreign students in Distance Education Programmes admitted directly or through study centres.
  • A few rooms in boys and girls hostels will be reserved for foreign students. However, if the number exceeds beyond a certain limit, efforts will be made to have a separate hostel for them.
  • Extra facilities, as per the instructions of the UGC/MHRD from time to time will be created for the foreign students. To make IEC a self-supportive unit, 20% of the fees received from foreign students will be diverted to the IEC for development activities.
  • Foreign students admitted to Distance Education Programme will be exempted from attending the Personal Contact Programme (PCP) if at all made compulsory in any course. Their queries relating to the courses will be attended by the Coordinator of the concerned programme.

University Sports Department - The entire Sports Complex is spread in an area of 40 Acres. The Sports Complex has one Multi-purpose hall for Indoor games such as  Badminton, Table-Tennis, Carom board, Chess, 13 station multi-Gym Yoga and Weight lifting. One half cemented Cricket pitch, one ground each for Football, hand ball, Cricket and Athletic Track of 400 meter and three Volley ball grounds. In addition, two cemented Basketball courts with lights, two Volleyball courts with fencing and lights, two synthetic Lawn Tennis courts with lights and fencing have recently been constructed. Timings for Sports activities are 6.00 A.M. to 9.00 A.M. and 4.00 P.M. to 8.00 P.M. for University students and Staff Members. The Sports Equipments/ kits are issued to the students as well as to the University Employees during tournaments. The University Teaching departments have been divided into eight houses for Sports Competitions. The Inter-House Tournaments are conducted in various games annually i.e. Chess, Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Hand ball, Cross-Country Race, Weight lifting, Volleyball shooting & smashing, Cricket and Annual Athletic Meet. Sports facilities for indoor games have been created in the Boys and Girls Hostels. Adventure Sports activities are also conducted in various events i.e. Skiing Course, Motor Bike Tour and Trekking etc.

Research Programmes
- Research, scholarship and creative work differentiate universities from all other educational institutions. The ideas, discoveries and innovations emanating from universities profoundly affect the social, cultural and economic well-being of our society. The University offers intensive research programmes leading to award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in all Departments offering post-graduate courses. Sufficient Laboratory & Infrastructural facilities are available. The registration for research programmes is done through entrance exam and pre-Ph.D. course. The details are available in the Brochure which can be had from Assistant Registrar (Registration).

SC/ST Cell - An SC/ST Cell has been set up in the University to ensure proper implementation of various schemes of the UGC, the Government of India and the State Govt. concerning scholarships, stipends etc. for welfare of reserved categories.  The guidelines, for various types of scholarship/ stipends  as revised from time to time by the Central and State Govts., are notified to all departments which are got displayed on the Notice Boards of the concerned departments. These are got incorporated in the University Prospectus also for its vide publicity and benefit of the students of the reserved categories. This Cell ensures that these guidelines are strictly adhered to.

CIL - The Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL) is established for the students, research scholars and teachers of the university who are actively engaged in R&D activities in the emerging areas of Science, Technology & Engineering. The CIL is presently having sophisticated instruments like High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPCL), Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), UV- VIS- NIR Spectrophotometer, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Lyophilizer and FT-IR Spectrometer. The process for procurement of LC-MS, HPTLC and Spectroflurimeter is in progress. These instruments are of multidisciplinary utility. These instruments are generally used to pursue R&D activities by the students of  Department of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Science, Physics, Environmental Science & Engineering and Chemistry.

BDG - Business Development Group has been mandated to foster closer  ties with the Corporate World, Industry Association, Government agencies, Multi-lateral bodies and others for the purpose of soliciting consultancy assignments, Collaborative research projects, establishment of study chair in the University and placement activities of the students.

IPR & TCC - Intellectual Property Rights & Technology Commercialization Cell. The IPRs are a bundle of exclusive rights over creations of the mind both artistic and commercial. The former is covered by copyright laws, which protect creative works, such as books, movies, music, paintings, photographs and software and gives the copyright holder exclusive right to control reproduction or adaptation of such works for a certain period of time. TCC is collectively known as "industrial properties", as they are typically created and used for industrial or commercial purposes. A patent may be granted for a new, useful, and non-obvious invention and gives the patent holder a right to prevent others from practising the invention without a license from the inventor for a certain period of time. A trademark is a distinctive sign which is used to prevent confusion among products in the marketplace. An industrial design right protects the form of appearance, style or design of an industrial object from infringement. A trade secret is an item of non-public information concerning the commercial practices or proprietary knowledge of a business.  All this calls for comprehensive understanding and detailed deliberations on various issues and intricacies involved and hence a separate cell was required to address the underlying objectives. Therefore the University has established a separate Cell for the purpose of Documentation and Commercialization of Research. The Cell is named as "Intellectual Property Rights & Technology Commercialization Cell". The very purpose of creating this Cell is to ensure the 'Commercial Use' of University's In-house Research and Technology-Outcomes to outside world. The Cell is expected to transfer University's intellectual property rights to needy organizations to promote active commercialization of University's inventions through a well-designed policy of the University in this connection.

University Cafeteria - The university has a Cafeteria with the facility of a big dining hall, kitchen, store and office on the ground floor. One big hall is also on the first floor. The cafeteria has a capacity to attend 125 customers for refreshment, lunch etc. The cafeteria provides refreshment, breakfast & lunch facilities. Facilities for special programme like tea party etc. are also available here. Junk food and tobacco items are not sold in the University cafeteria.

Health Centre - It is a primary health care centre to cater the medical needs of University Staff and students. The Health Centre building is situated near the Girls Hostels and residences of employees to provide an easy access to all concerned. It is spacious enough to accommodate 2 doctors' cabins, a dispensing room, a laboratory, a medicine store, a minor O.T. and an observation room with 3 beds facility. The University has also tied up with Insurance Company to provide 'Student Safety Insurance Policy' against the nominal annual premium by the Students.

Networking Cell - Advances in ICT (Information & Communication Technologies) have been accelerating at an unparallel pace in history. Many breakthroughs can be described as revolutionary. More and more, communication networks based on modern telecommunication technology are allowing all forms of information, whether voice, data, text or video to be exchanged to and from anywhere and at any time. In order to cater all such needs of Information & Communication Technologies for students, staff and faculty of university, Networking Cell has been set-up in the university. At present all the teaching departments, hostels (common room), administrative blocks and other offices have been connected with a combination of wired and wireless network. The internet connectivity has been provided through 4 Mbps leased line free of cost to faculty, staff and students of university for 24 hours. The network has been empowered through high capacity and secured active and passive components. University is also in the process of expanding this network to newly created buildings and setting up a reliable and secured Wi-Fi Campus by 31st July, 2009.

Placement and Training - There are two independent Training & Placement Cells - One for Haryana School of Business and the other for Engineering courses. In addition, every department has a Training & Placement In-charge who coordinates these activities with the Central Training & Placement Cells. These provide adequate training and placement facilities are available for the students. The University also arranges campus interviews. Workshops, Seminars and Symposia are conducted regularly. In plant industrial training is an essential component of most of  the courses.

UGC-Academic Staff College - It plans, organises, implements, monitors and evaluates orientation courses for newly appointed college/university lecturers. The UGC-ASC organises refresher courses for serving teachers, and orientation programmes for senior administrators and heads of departments, principals, officers, etc.

Other Facilities - The University has a branch of a nationalized bank, Punjab National Bank with ATM facility and a Post Office in the Shopping Complex.

Achievements

  • The University enjoys a rare distinction of getting recognised by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) for recognition of degrees, on 11.1.1996 and, under section 12(B) of the UGC Act  to be eligible for central assistance on 7.2.1997, i.e., within 15 months of its coming into being.
  • The NAAC accredited this University at "A" level (institutional score 85%) among the Universities.
