About Sri Krishnadevaraya University

Sri Krishnadevaraya University had its beginning as the Post Graduate centre of Sri Venkateswara University in the year 1968. It gained autonomy in the year 1976. The University is named after a patron of learning and the arts, Sri Krishnadevaraya, of the Vijayanagara empire of the 16th century. Fulfilling the desires of the people of the region, the Autonomous Post Graduate centre was given the status of the University in the Year 1981. Initially, Sri Krishndevaraya University functioned as a unitary residential University. It was conferred the status of an affiliating University in the year 1987. Presently, it is catering to the higher educational needs of the revenue districts of Anantapur and Kurnool. The Post Graduate centre at Kurnool was brought under the jurisdiction of the University in the year 1993. Post-Graduate courses and research programmes are presently offered by the University at the University College, Anantapur, and at the Post Graduate centre, Kurnool. The University College offers 38 post graduate courses through 28 departments. 11 post graduate courses are being conducted at the P.G. centre, Kurnool through 8 departments.

Sri Krishnadevaraya University is also contributing to the cause of higher education through 112 affiliated degree colleges of which 7 are meant exclusively for women. The other colleges affiliated to the University include 26 Colleges of Education, 2 Oriental Colleges, 2 Law Colleges and one Engineering College. 20 affiliated colleges under the University are also offering post graduate courses in various disciplines. Sri Krishnadevaraya University has facilities for undertaking study and research through well established library and laboratories. The infrastructure of the University also includes Bhuvana Vijayam Auditorium, Sabari Guest House, Health centre, Adhyapak Bhavan, NSS Building and several buildings for teaching departments and residential quarters.

Research and Projects - In addition to research in the above mentioned department, the faculty are engaged in the pursuit of major and minor research projects worth Rs. 4.50 crores. One of the major projects sanctioned by ISRO is related to Studies on Air-Space Pollution. It is an inter-departmental project. The Department of Mathematics has entered into a memorandum of Agreement with Lukov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute, Minsk, Belarus, for joint research, mutual collaboration on professional development programmes for the period from 2000 to 2005.

Campus Schoo
l - There are other important facilities on the campus like a Campus School with an intake of 400 catering to the need of the surrounding cluster of villages, a Kendriya Vidyalaya with a two crore capital investment on the campus. There is further a wing of the Archaeology Department along with a museum attached to the History Department to explore work relating to the Vijayanagara Empire. The activities of the Consumer Forum managed by the Commerce Department take care of consumer education and promote consumer awareness.

SKIM - Sri Krishnadevaraya Institute of Management is one of the distinguished premier business schools in India. The institute adopts an open system in training and development of students’ personality, which is essential for managerial positions. The teaching methods adopted are a judicious mix of classroom sessions, field visits, role plays, simulation games, business games and case studies. The communication laboratory provides a forum for every student to share thoughts, ideas and work for the all round development of the student community. The activities include Group discussions, Debates, Role-plays, Business Games, Quiz etc.

CDE - The University established the Centre for Distance Education with the introduction of the post-graduate courses under distance mode for the benefit of those who could not pursue education under regular mode and to the disadvantaged sections of the society. The Centre offers various academic programmes that lead to certificates, Diplomas and Under Graduate, Post Graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. Degrees. The undergraduate courses B.A. and B.Com were introduced in the academic year 2005-06. At present the CDE is offering B.A., B.Sc., B.Com (Gen), B.Com (Computers), B.LiSc and B.Ed. The Post-graduate courses offered by the Centre include M.A. in English, Telugu, History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology; Rural Development; M.Sc. in Mathematics, Botany, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Zoology; Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, Electronics and Instrumentation, M.Com., M.B.A., M.C.A.; P.G. Diploma courses in Business Administration, Marketing Management, Insurance Management, Computer applications, Mass Communications and Journalism, e-Commerce and Human Rights and Values education. FIST/Special Assistance Programmes - The Departments of Botany, Biochemistry, Polymer Science and Instrumentation have been admitted under the FIST programme (Fund for the Improvement of Science & Technology) of the DST. The Department of Botany acquired a Green House facility supported by DST under FIST programme. It facilitates the growth and development of medicinally and commercially important experimental plants and provides controlled conditions for the experimental research in the field of plant science including the development of transgenic plants. These are trend indicative of the fact that a reinforcement of quality culture, appropriately contextualized, has been on the agenda of the institution. Under the A.P. Netherlands Biotechnology programme, the Dept. of Biotechnology has offered departmental support to the tune of Rs. 1.56 crores for infrastructure development, conduct of refresher Courses and faculty enrichment. The Department of Economics has been admitted to aid by the UGC under the SAP-DRS Scheme.

Hostels
- The University has five hostels for men and two hostels for women students with an additional hostel for working women and day care centre. They accommodate around 2000 Students and Research Scholars. A common dining hall for men is recently inaugurated with the grants from the UGC where 500 students can dine at a time.

Central library - It is provided with a rich and varied collection of 114000 books, 190 periodicals and 118 magazines and other holdings enriched primarily on account of the generous support extended by the UGC. The library consists of a separate section for helping the students to prepare for the competitive examinations at various levels. The library has back volumes on the stacks numbering 13,600. There are further one SC/ST Book Bank and a Competitive Examinations Cell in the library for helping the students to prepare for competitive examinations at various levels. Sports - The University College provides facilities for a wide range of sports and games. It has a modern gymnasium which is equipped with the latest gymnastic and fitness gadgets like the multi-gym. The Gym provides facilities for indoor games like shuttle badminton, table-tennis, chess, carroms, besides Weightlifting and malkhamb. The renovated University stadium provides facilities for cricket, foot ball, and athletics. There are also courts for ball badminton, basket ball, volley ball, tennis, etc. The University hosts All India and South zone Inter-University games competitions regularly. Intramural are conducted annually. In addition, intercollegiate sports and games are conducted quite frequently in the campus. Coaching camps in different disciplines are held periodically in an atmosphere congenial to the development of skills in different sports and games.

Health Centre - It caters to the needs of students, staff, non-teaching staff, visiting faculty of the University and to a limited extend to the needs of the surrounding cluster of villages. There are three Medical Officers manning the Health centre. Facilities available are as follows -

Out-patient clinic & free drug dispensary (with an annual budget of 4.2 lakhs) to students, Research Scholars, Teaching and Non-Teaching staff and their families, Hostel staff and their families, campus residents and hostel inmates, delegates of seminars, Spot valuation staff, Summer course students, N.S.S. Programme volunteers, participants of sports meets, Cultural meets, Youth festivals, Competitive exams goings, guests of students and staff, Building construction workers, and canteen workers and helpless people.
  2. Pregnancy identification and confirmation and antenatal check-ups.
  3. Deliveries - Episiotancy and forceps application

Computer centre -The centre acts as a resource and services centre and related to the spread of computer education in the University both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The centre organizes regular training programmes for the faculty and the non-teaching staff to promote their computer knowledge.

E-Class Room - The University College has a Unique facility of a virtual Class Room in E-Class Room situated in the NSB-IV Building with a capacity of 100 students. The A.C. Hall has the latest facilities like LCD Projector, 29” T.V. to view the Mana T.V. Programmes telecast through KU Band by the Society for A.P. Network. Principal’s Office would circulate the schedule of the regular programmes to be telecast every month in the field of Humanities, Science & Technology, Management, Social Science etc.

The University Local Area Network - The Network was set up in the Sri Krishnadevaraya University Campus, Anantapur. This LAN facility is instituted with the object of connecting all the university departments (Academic & Administrative) with OFC and organizes all the communication of the activities through electronic document. Apart from it the Internet facility is provided with BSNL Leased lines to meet the Academic and Research interests of all the staff and students. The internet access is free and unlimited to all the students and staff of the college.

Physical Education Facilities - The university has facilities for the students to play and practice different sports and games. All the students are eligible to participate in the competitions during the Annul Sports Day celebrations. Inter-collegiate tournaments are conducted annually in athletics, basketball, ball-badminton,shuttle-badminton, khokho and volleyball for men and women. Men are also be eligible to participate in cricket, hockey, football, kabaddi and chess. Students with a distinct merit are selected to represent the University in the Inter-University tournaments. Basing upon the performance of the players in the inter-collegiate tournaments, a selection committee consisting of five members will select the members of the University team. The University campus has a Gymnasium for promoting fitness among the men students. The Gymnasium, equipped with modern facilities, can be used by the students between 6:00am - 8:00am and 5:00pm-6:00pm on all working days.

SKIAD
- Sri Krishnadevaraya Institute of Academic Development caters to the academic needs of the students of the weaker sections. In addition to the facilities offered by the SC/ ST Cell, the SKIAD organizes a series of a coaching programmes for state-level and national-level examinations and supplies resource material to those enrolled free of cost. It has a hostel and a library attached to it.

UGC Sponsored Free Coaching Schemes for SC, ST & Minority Students - Under the scheme the UGC has provided Rs. 42.00 lakhs for the organization of coaching classes for the SCs and STs and the Minorities for the National Eligibility Test (NET/SLET) and Civil Services Examinations.

Placement and Career Guidance Cell - A Placement and Career Guidance Cell of the University collects and disseminates information relating to career opportunities available to the students of different faculties. In the recent years a spur has been given to campus selection drive by various industries, thanks to greater coordination being built up between the Departments and the Industry. The Departments of Electronics, Chemistry, and Instrumentation have taken the lead in this and quite a few final semester students have been selected in campus recruitment.

USIC - The University Science Instrumentation centre serves as a central facility for the repairs, servicing and maintenance of sophisticated instruments. It has highly skilled manpower and infrastructure in the areas of electrical & electronics, mechanical workshop, glass blowing etc. It also organizes the training programmes / work shops for the degree college teachers and helps the colleges in the development of low cost experimental kits.

Banking & ATM - The University has facilities of fully Computerised Andhra banks & ATM. The banking needs of the staff and students are met by the branches of the Andhra Bank.

Canteen/Cafe - Janmabhumi Canteen at convenient locations in the campus cater to the tastes of the inmates and visitors alike. The Staff Quarters provide adequate residential accommodation to the staff on the campus.

Achievements
  • In a short span of two decades of its existence, Sri Krishnadevaraya University gained recognition as a centre of academic excellence, as it is accorded a four star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
  • Sri Krishnadevaraya University Herbarium is internationally recognized and indexed by New York Botanical Garden. It is one of the 52 herbaria in India officially recognized. There are more than 30,000 specimen covering more than 2000 species collected from all over A.P. and the Eastern Ghats. It is given official acronym ‘SKU’. Scientists of Biology Departments are pursuing DNA finger printing of these plant species.
