About Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Gandhinagar

Indian Institute Of Technology - Gandhinagar (IITGn) is one among the new IITs started from the academic year 2008-09. The institute has recently been established and the first batch of the B.Tech. programme has been inducted through JEE-2008. IIT Bombay has been identified as the mentoring institute for IIT Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad is known for its excellent infrastructure with thriving industries, prestigious academic and research institutes and an ambiance which encourages excellence and entrepreneurship. Currently the Institute is functioning from the premises of the Vishwakarma Government Engineering College. The Institute has excellent facilities in terms of classrooms, laboratory spaces, faculty offices, etc. IIT Gandhinagar currently offers a 4-year B. Tech. programme in the Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical engineering branches. It also offers Ph.D. programme in several disciplines in Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical), Sciences (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) and Humanities & Social Sciences (Economics, English, Philosophy and Sociology). The undergraduate curriculum is currently similar to that of IIT Bombay with some modifications. IIT GN also follows the specialized semester based academic system for imparting education as is prevalent in other IITs. There are two Semesters in an academic year (Autumn – July-Nov; and Spring – January-April). The students are required to follow the laid down procedures and meet the academic requirements of each semester to progress in their respective study programme. The courses of study bulletin contain the curricula and syllabi for the 4year B.Tech. degree of IIT Gandhinagar. The curricula for the firs two semesters are common to all disciplines. However, the remaining curricula are discipline / department oriented.

IIT-Gn has also formed a programme with the Washington University in St Louis (WUSTL) to enable undergraduate chemical and mechanical engineering students to participate in summer internships this May. Selected students from IIT-Gn will work for 10 weeks at WUSTL’s laboratories on topics such as design of next generation solar cells, technologies for carbon dioxide capture and mitigation from coal combustors, aerosol science and technology, and water quality issues in energy systems. They will also work with students in groups there.
