About Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Ropar

Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar is amongst the eight new IITs to become operational. The Institute with 40 students each in the disciplines of Computer Science, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering started running from its mentor institute campus at IIT Delhi from 23 July, 2008. The temporary campus for IIT Ropar is set up with all the facilities as required. Class rooms fitted with multimedia, faculty rooms administrative wing are all in place. The Institute is operating from the transit campus at Ropar from this session and has started the classes from 18th August 2009. The Government of Punjab has provided 500 acres of land at a scenic location near the banks of Sutlej river for IIT Ropar. Appointment of consultants and architects for building the new campus has begun.The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar forms a part of the league along with 15 (7 existing, 8 proposed) other IITs in India. The proposed location for IIT Punjab is Birla seed Farms, Rupnagar, district headquarter of Punjab near Chandigarh. The classes for academic session 2008-2009 were held at IIT Delhi. Foundation stone of IIT Punjab was laid down on 24th feb, 2009 by former Union HRD Minister Mr. Arjun singh. The medium of instruction at IIT Punjab is English. The Institute is based on the semester system. An academic year begins in July and ends in June the following year. For the academic year 2008-2009 at IIT Punjab, the Ist semester starts in the last week of July and ends in the 2nd week of December. The 2nd semester starts in the last week of December/first week of January and ends in the 2nd week of May. The detailed schedule of activities and academic deadlines are given in the semester schedule that is available before the start of the semester.Education at the Institute is organized around the semester-based credit system of study. The prominent features of the credit system are a process of continuous evaluation of a student's performance / progress and flexibility to allow a student to progress at an optimum pace suited to his/ her ability or convenience, subject to fulfilling minimum requirements for continuation. A student's performance/progress is measured by the number of credits that he/she has earned, i.e. completed with a pass grade. Based on the course credits and grade obtained by the student, grade point average is calculated. A minimum grade point average is required to be maintained for satisfactory progress and continuation in the programme.

Location and Transportation - IIT Punjab is located at Rupnagar (formerly known as Ropar) town of the district Rupnagar. Rupnagar was founded in the 11th century and named after Rup Sen son of Raja Rokeshar. Rupnagar town, the district headquarters is 42 km. from Chandigarh, the state capital. Rupnagar is well connected by road on National Highway NH-21. The Delhi-Ambala-Una railway line passes through Rupnagar and provides good rail connectivity. The nearest airport is at Chandigarh at a distance of about 60 km. The Satluj river passes close to Rupnagar.

Facilities

Hostels - There are three hostels; two for boys and one for girls equipped with modern messing units in place and operational.
