About Visvesaraya National Institute of Technology - VNIT Nagpur

The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the twenty National Institutes of Technology in the Country. The Govt. of India converted this Institute into National Institute of Technology and conferred the Deemed to be University status (under University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)) with effect from 26th June 2002. Before conversion, the Institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering that was established in the year 1960 under the scheme sponsored by Government of India and Govt. of Maharashtra. The College was started in June 1960 by amalgamating the State Govt. Engineering College functioning at Nagpur since July 1956. In the meeting held in October 1962, the Governing Board of the College resolved to name it after an eminent engineer, planner, statesman of the Country Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The prime objective of establishing Regional Engineering Colleges was to impart quality technical education throughout the country and foster national integration. The College started functioning in 1960 from camp office in the premises of Govt. Polytechnic, Sadar, Nagpur and subsequently an area of about 214 acres was acquired to house an independent Regional Engineering College at present location. It is named after the eminent engineer, planner and statesman of the country Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Apart from imparting professional education at under graduate and postgraduate levels, the institute has been extending available expertise to various Govt. / Semi- Govt. and primary objective of institute is to provide advanced technological skills & expertise to enhance teaching & academic activities. Greater emphasis is also being placed on revenue generation through utilisation of facilities for providing services to the industries on commercial basis. VNIT has a beautiful green campus of about 214 acres near Ambazari Dam. All departments & laboratories are housed on the campus. Hostels accommodating about 1000 students, including 200 girl students, as well as residential accommodation for teaching & non-teaching staff of the college are available on the campus. Consciously developed, the campus has retained & increased its green cover, rich in natural flora & fauna, & provides an attraction for bird watchers.

Facilities

Hostels - V.N.I.T. has excellent residential facilities to cater the need of more than a thousand students. There are seven Boys Hostels and two Girls Hostels. Each hostel is having a telephone, T.V., Sports Items, water coolers, water heaters and well equipped mess facilities. It is mandatory for hostel inmates to join the mess in his / her hostel, managed by committee of students' representatives. All hostels are having independent mess where vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are available. All residents have to bear the wages of the mess cooks, servants, helpers and cleaners. Ministerial staff is provided by the Institute. The Chief Warden looks after the management of the hostels along with a team of seven wardens and Hostel Manager.

VNIT Library - The VNIT Library is 4 decades old having an independent three storied building. The collections of books and journals have been methodically developed through the years. It is always ensured that the collection is dynamic in nature by stacking separately ACTIVE and INACTIVE collection in tune with changes in syllabi. The library and information resources centre is automated and users LIBSYS software. Students and faculty access library information through ON LINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOUGUE indexed databases called EI-COMPENDEX PLUS, DISSERTATION ABSTRACTS INTERNATIONAL and SAE Technical Papers are on campus-wide network of 10/100 Mbps lines and are available round the clock.

Computer Centre - The Institute has an independent computer centre for catering to the services of the entire Institute. The centre remains open for extended hours i.e. up to mid-night everyday. The students visiting the centre during odd hours are provided guidance as and when necessary. The computer centre has adequate number of Servers, PCs, Printers, Thin Clients etc.

Distance Education Program - To facilitate the availability of the world-class IIT courses to Non-IITians, VNIT has set-up remote Centre for Distance Engineering Education (C-DEEP) of IIT Bombay in 2002. Majority of the courses taught at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay are made available at this remote centre. Students / teachers / Professionals in the the faculty of Engineering, Science, MCA are eligible for the courses. A semester long course in various subjects are offered through this remote centre. The courses is taught by IIT faculty and made available live through video-conferring via Edu-Sat satellite. Student can interact with faculty on-line which helps him in better and deeper understanding of the course. The courses are offered in different modes. The fee varies from Rs. 1000/- to 35,000/- depending upon mode of registration. VLSI Design and Research Laboratory - VLSI Design Lab is having all industry standard  EDA Tools for VLSI Design. The lab uses Cadence Design Suite,Synopsys Design Suite and Magma for Analog IC Design and Digital IC design. Mentor Graphics Design Suite is also used by the academics labs for B.tech & M.tech. Also in use is the FPGA Design tools from Xilinx & Altera for reconfigurable FPGA design. For Sytem level design BlueSpec & for processor based design CoWare is used. Device modelling is done using Silvaco TCAD Tools. RF IC design is done with ADS from Agilent & Eldo RF from Mentor. The lab is also working on antenna design using industry standard tool HFSS from AnSoft.

Training &  Placements - Necessary guidance is provided by the Department  to the students for career planning and personality development.  The campus interview with prospective employers are regularly arranged for the placement of students from all branches.   These  include Public and Private Sector Organisations, Multi National Companies and Govt. Organisations.  During the academic year 2007-2008 the Institute has been able to place  96% under graduate students in various industries before they actually pass out from the institute.

Some of the Features of Placements & Training:

  • Dream Job Placements - The  Institute  has adapted  “Dream Job “ Policy since last few years. The policy provides for eligible students to opt for the industry/organization offering a minimum salary (CTC) of 4 lac per annum.
  • Overseas Placements - The students are also offered job overseas through campus. M/s Hasan Juma Backer Co. LLC, Sultanate of Oman, Muscat has been regularly visiting the  Institute since last seven years  and has offered job to several students.
  • Optional Training - The students undergo Industrial training during summer vacation generally for a period of 4 weeks.  This training is meant for the engineering  disciplines viz. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics., Electronics & Communication, Computer Science & Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials and Mining. Although the  training is optional,  majority students take advantage of the same.
  • Compulsory Training - Mining Engineering Course In keeping with the course curriculum, all mining engineering students are required to  undergo  compulsory  training in mining industry.  This training is arranged during every summer and winter vacation. Architecture Course The students of  fourth year  Architecture & Planning  Course have to undergo a compulsory training for a period of 6 months towards the end of 4th year.  On successful  completion of the training,  the students  carry out  a project of  6 months duration in  the Institute  under the guidance of the faculty at the Department.
  • Training of M. Tech. Students - While the industrial training for PG students of engineering is not compulsory, several students from  various departments carry out their dissertation work for a period of about 4 to 6 months in concerned industries and organizations.  This activity is coordinated by the concerned faculty from respective Department.

VAIO - VNIT Alumni Interaction Office (VAIO). The VAIO plays a crucial role as a single point of interaction for alumni, students and the Institute. It also encourages the alumni to interact with the Institute and the student fraternity through various platforms like guest lectures, Institute activities, etc. It also provides a central role in networking to various alumni and help in organizing the reunions. It encourages the alumni who are expert in their respective fields to give their opinions for the development of the Institute in matters related to academics, R&D, labs etc.

Extracurricular Activities - These include participation in NCC, NSS, SPIC MACAY club, The Quiz Pro Co., Thalassaemia Awareness Society, Club Capture - The photography club, IEEE Students' Chapter and ACM Student Chapter. A modern gymnasium and other sports facilities are also available in the campus. The college also has a very active music club which has resulted in the formation of amateur rock bands like Vighn, Saints of Metal, Rust, and Drakshya and also a classical group called Hamsdhwani in affiliation with SPIC MACAY.

Chandrama - Chandrama is the night canteen for VNIT hostlers. It has been around since 1978, providing many people with poha (a rice flour based dish), samosa , tea, milk and biscuits. It is one of the most popular hangout spots for the nocturnal beings of VNIT during exams and assignment submissions. It is managed by Chandrama ji from where it got its name.

Achievements

According to a recent survey, this Institute is now amongst the top 15 institutes in the country producing human resource capable of coping with the accelerating pace of technological developments at international level.
