International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore is a Deemed University established in 1999. An Autonomous Institute, it is popularly known as IIIT-B. It has been established on the lines of other well established Institutes of National Importance (INI) in India. These INIs include the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The other objective behind setting up the institute is to contribute to the IT world by focusing on education, research, entrepreneurship and innovation. The Institute is a registered not-for-profit society funded jointly by the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry. The Institute moved to its present Electronics City campus in 2003. IIIT B became a Deemed University in 2005. It started offering M. Tech and Ph. D programmes since then. Prior to the deemed university status, the Institute offered, a highly valued post graduate diploma programme. In 2012, it started a five year integrated M. Tech programme admitting students who have completed their higher secondary school educations.

IIIT-B is situated opposite the Infosys corporate headquarters and is within easy walking distance of other major companies like HP, Siemens, Wipro, GE, Satyam and others, giving students and faculty opportunities for productive interaction with the industry. IIIT-B is also closely associated with the Government of Karnataka's Board for IT Education Standards (BITES) that establishes academic benchmarks for undergraduate IT education in the state. IIIT-Bangalore has an applicant: student ratio of higher than 15. It has attracted people with Ph.D degrees from MIT, UC Berkeley, University of Toronto, Purdue, leading universities of Europe, IIT’s and IISc to be on its 36 strong faculty. Its 1800+ M.Tech graduates work in 100+ corporations in 20+ countries. Some of them are pursuing doctoral programs in leading Universities like UC Berkeley / MIT.

The library is an institutional member of British Library, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) Library. It also provides only on-campus access to Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), IEEE Electronic Library (IEL), JSTOR, The American Mathematical Monthly, The College Mathematics Journal, Mathematics Magazine and Maths Horizons.

Scholarships - Scholarships are available for all Ph.D. and Masters of Science by Research students. These are also available to approximately 15-20% of the M. Tech. students and to approximately 25% of iM. Tech. students. The selection based on student accomplishments in academic as well as other areas and interviews. We welcome Industry to offer scholarships to our students.

Fellowships - For full-time Ph.D. students, a fellowship of INR 25,000/- per month for the first 3 years (extendable to 1 more year in deserving cases) is available. Such funding for the Ph.D. students comes from within IIITB, from sponsored research projects, or with industry support from HP, IBM, Intel, Infosys, Motorola, Siemens, Microsoft, ABB, and other companies.

Classrooms - The well-designed main classroom comfortably seats in excess of 150 students. Video conferencing capabilities are built in using state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment. They include electronic smart boards, location-sensing microphones, and multiple LCD projectors, thus enabling an enriching learning experience.

Food Court - Meals are available at the Food Court located in a separate building (the food that our students have is the same food that is also had by faculty and staff, and offered to visitors including distinguished dignitaries, thus ensuring quality).

Cafeteria - A separate small cafeteria is available for snacks during working hours.

Computing Resources – The institute has fully wired campus consisting of a high-speed fiber-optic backbone connected to the internal network through a high-end gigabit Ethernet switch. Dedicated network equipment includes printers, scanners, and other equipment. Connectivity in the campus is established at two levels. First, the local intranet implements a Virtual Classroom, where all the visual material, such as presentation slides used by professors in class, are made available electronically to students. All assignments and projects are announced and submitted online. The intranet also enables knowledge sharing among students.

At the second level, 24*7 Internet access is available throughout campus, in both wired and wireless modes. IIIT-B is one of the few institutions in India to have an active wireless LAN (and was the first to have this technology). Wireless-mode access is available throughout campus using the 802.11b protocol. In addition, high-quality Ethernet ports are installed at various locations in the building, providing wired Internet access through a proxy web server. All students have a Wi-Fi enabled laptop for their exclusive use. This ensures a student to machine ratio of better than 1:1, implying complete accessibility. This in turn allows for an individual approach to learning, providing the freedom to learn at one's own pace and focus on one's chosen domain of specialization.

Innovation Centre – IIITB Innovation Centre is the name of the Incubation Centre founded in 2009. A sec 25 company, it has already enabled the startup of around a dozen companies and is involved in incubating several technology startups in areas such as Medical Devices, Aadhaar based devices for financial inclusion, social media and smart metering solutions. The Innovation Centre offers space, connectivity and other infrastructure facilities at a nominal cost. In addition students are encouraged to work in the enterprises or R&D centres in the Innovation Centre. Industry can play a vital role in mentoring the startup companies, be it advising them about the market, help with funding, strategy, etc. The Innovation Centre invites accomplished professionals - in the field of IT, Finance, Legal, Marketing, Venture Funding, etc – who are passionate about working with startup companies, to join its panel of mentors.
