About Indian Institute of Management - IIM Kozhikode

The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIMK) was established by the government of India and Kerala., it its the fifth Institute of Management in India. IIMK was established in 1997 with a batch of 42 students in its Postgraduate Programme (PGP) , it increased PGP intake to 120 in 2003, 180 in 2005 and to 261 in 2008, thus making it the fastest growing  management school in the country to reach that landmark. The Institute moved to its new campus in January 2003. The Institute started its Fellow (Doctoral) Programme in Management  in 2007 to complete full range of educational services expected from an Institution of higher learning. The institute facilitates sharing of knowledge and meeting of minds, through its National and International Conferences  that it holds on a regular basis. It has conducted 15 conferences in the last 5 years and during 2008-09 sessions, 5 more conferences are to be held. The Institute also started taking Consulting Assignments which crossed Rs. 10 million mark in 2007. IIMK is also one of the few Centres for Development of Digital Libraries in the world and is a leader in the country. A significant step was taken for incubation of a Centre of Excellence jointly with Government of Kerala, which is one of its kind in India, to help the Scheduled Castes/tribes students overcome their deficiencies in communication, personality etc. Incidentally, IIMK is one of the few management institutes in the country who have filled full quota of SC/ST candidates in its Postgraduate Programme on regular basis with sound track record in job placement. Some visiting faculty members from foreign institutions complement the pool. All the full time faculty members carry out research studies in diverse fields of management. The institute is a Central Autonomous Body registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, and is managed by a Board of Governors. The Director  is the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute. The institute is spread over about 100 acres of land, the Institute is situated on two hillocks in Kunnamangalam Area of ancient city of Calicut in Kerala. The world class infrastructure including air-conditioned classrooms, guest care areas and LAN/WAN connectivity enables IIMK to offer a life time experience to a visitor.

Facilities

Students' Hostels - The institute has 10 well designed hostels capable of accommodating about 600 students. The classrooms, computer centre, canteen, and all other facilities are within walking distance of the hostel. The students are provided rooms on single occupancy basis. TV and washing machines are provided in every hostel. Facilities for making STD/ISD calls are located within the hostels. The hostels also have facilities for various sports like table tennis, badminton, carom, chess etc. Other facilities include gymnasium and basic medical facilities. All the hostels rooms have been provided with a LAN connection to cater to the computing needs of the students. Lady students are provided separate accommodation inside the campus.

LIC - The Library & Information Centre (LIC) has acquired over 15375 books. The books are classified according to the UDC Scheme of Library Classification. LIC Digital Catalogue (OPAC) is available in the Institute LAN and the OPAC client is available at most of the workstations in the LAN. Journals (Alphabetical / Subject Catalogue) : The LIC subscribes to around 360 print and over 900 electronic journals, along with a massive set of over 4000 aggregated full-text contents of e-journals, both Indian and foreign. Videos (Alphabetical / Subject Catalogue) : The Audio-Visual Unit in the LIC hosts about 226 educational videos, covering the entire range of disciplines in management. CDs/CBTs : The LIC has acquired over 150 CDs and CBTs.

Classrooms - All the classrooms at IIMK are equipped with all the modern teaching aids needed to support technology enhanced learning. All the classrooms are thus equipped with computers, multimedia projectors and motorized screens, OHPs, Wireless Presenters and other audio-visual tools. There is a separate high tech room which is equipped with the state-of-the-art ISDN and IP based video conferencing facilities.

IT Facilities - The IT set up at IIMK comprises of a multi layered architecture, the lowest layer of which is made up of personal computers and workstations. The next layer consists of File servers and Database servers. The third layer consists of Web server, FTP server, Email server and other high-end servers/computers required high resources demanding tasks. All the buildings including hostels in the campus are part of the campus LAN and all the services available on the LAN can be accessed from any node. The entire campus has been Wi-Fi enabled to provide mobility to the users in accessing various services available on institute's network. . All the guest houses and residences are connected via WI-FI backbone. Classrooms, Library, Computer Centre and Seminar Hall have been enabled with indoor wireless network.  There are more than 250 High End personal computers connected over the campus LAN under some of the latest Network Operating Systems running on some of the latest high-end Itanium and Dual Xeon based Rack Servers. A very high capacity Network Storage facility integrated with an automated data backup and recovery system caters to the data storage requirement of all the users. Network printing facility is available on a wide variety of printers such as Inkjet, Laser, Line and Dot Matrix Printers. All these printers can be accessed from anywhere in the campus. Other equipment available in the centre include Notebooks, CD/DVD Writers, High quality Scanners and LCD Projectors.

Interactive Distance Learning Infrastructure - The institute has entered in a MoU with M/s Hughes Escorts Communications Ltd. for offering Interactive Distance Learning Programme on real time synchronous basis. M/s HECL has set up a studio at IIMK for this purpose. With the aim of helping practising executives, who are not in a position to join its long duration residential education programmes, the Institute provides an opportunity through the Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) mode.

IIMK currently offers the following executive education programmes over IDL:

  1. ePGP - Executive Post Graduate Programme.
  2. eMEP - Executive Management Education Programme.
  3. eEPF - Executive Education Programme in Finance.
  4. eEPSM - Executive Education Programme in Strategic Management.
  5. eEPM - Executive Education Programme in Marketing.
  6. eEPOM - Executive Education Programme in Operations Management.

International Exchange Programme - The agreement signed with Victoria University concerns, besides faculty exchange, doctoral students rather than MBA students. This agreement is the first of its kind in India for Victoria University of Wellington. Another way IIM Kozhikode promotes exchanges with institutions abroad is by maintaining memberships in such bodies as the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, which facilitates interactions between the Canadian and the Indian educational institutions. It is also a member of the Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS), which plays a leadership role among the management institutions in the Asia-Pacific Region. Of the various agreements, the agreement signed with Victoria University concerns, besides faculty exchange, doctoral students rather than MBA students. This agreement is the first of its kind in India for Victoria University of Wellington.

Research - Faculty members undertake research on a wide range of topics such as Global Competitiveness, WTO Research Centre, Kerala State Development Report, Development of Digital Library etc. These projects are funded either through IIMK's 'Small Grant Research Project' scheme, by external sources such as the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, Government of Kerala or through collaborations with foreign universities/ research institutes.

Conferences - IIMK has created academic and residential infrastructure for conferences to accommodate up to 250 delegates in the campus in a picturesque setting akin to summer resort on hills. This will go up to cater to 350 delegates in summer of 2009 and further 550 delegates by 2010-11. Conferences are also conducted in collaboration with other business schools at various locations.

Sports - All the hostels have facilities for various indoor games such as table tennis, carom, chess etc. In addition to these, institute also has ample space for outdoor sports like badminton, basket ball, football and cricket. Students of IIMK regularly participate in various inter - college sports competitions including IIMK-IIMB Annual Sports Meet.

Guest Houses - The institute currently has 6 air-conditioned guest houses which can accommodate about 60 guests at a time. Accommodation with attached toilet, TV with cable connection, small refrigerator, coffee maker and internet connectivity are provided in the rooms. The Institute has a strong International Exchange Programme  for students and faculty with several leading Management Institutes in EU and ASEAN countries like SDA, Bacconi, Jonkoping, Sweden, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, ESCAP-EAP, France; University of Queensland, Austria, Victoria University of Wellington, New zealand etc. It is an active member of Strategic Management Forum, to organize Seminar/Conferences and conduct management teacher's programme. Leading Management Institutions like IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore and Lucknow along with MDI, Gurgaon, XLRI, Jamshedpur and IIFT, New Delhi join hands to conduct week long faculty development programme on various subjects in the field of Strategic Management.

Auditorium - The institute has a Seminar hall with a seating capacity of about 250 that is used for conducting seminars, conferences, culture programmes, students' events and other important events of the institute.

Students' Mess - Students of IIMK have mess facilities exclusively for them. Evening and night canteen facilities are also available.

Publication Cell - IIM Kozhikode faculty and staff regularly publish their work in reputed refereed national and international journals. During the academic year 2006-2007, eighteen journal articles, five book chapters, five edited books, one book, fifteen working papers and three case studies were published.

Consultancy Projects - IIMK also undertakes consulting projects to help the corporate and non-corporate sectors, public system and government through analytical and problem solving support. The assignment varies in terms of functional area expertise use time period, their monetary value significance and geographical locations of clients.

Placements - An integral part of the PGP, summer projects are designed to provide students an opportunity to put their learning into practice, while enabling companies to use quality managers-in¬the-making for real-life short term assignments. The final placement process for the graduating batch takes place in March. There is also a lateral placement process that provides students with substantial prior work experience lateral-entry management positions in firms.

Achievements

  • The All India Council for Technical Education has recognized IIMK as a Quality Improvement Centre in November 2004.
  • IIMK pioneered Interactive Distance Learning (IDL)  for working executives in India . Starting with 300 class contact hrs. in 2001-02, the year-long Executive Management Education Programme is today the richest one available in the country having 450 class contact hours. With the launch of 4 new 6-month long modular educational programmes in Strategic Management, Finance, Marketing and Operations Management areas, the IDL platform offers 1350 contact hours of long duration programmes today.
  • The training activity has grown after the Institute moved to its new campus in January 2003. The number of programmes increased from 8 in 2003-04 to 26 in 2007-08, the number of participant days went up from 520 to over 5000. The training activity is expected to have rapid growth with the latest 64 room executive hostel now under completion and the construction of a modern 200 bed management development complex to be completed in in 2010-11.
  • The Institute is today leader in Faculty Development Programmes (FDP), conducting largest number of programmes (18) totalling 20 weeks in 2008-09, and is the major QIP (Quality Improvement Programme) Centre of the All Indian Council of Technical Education, in the field of management education.
