About Solapur University

Solapur University (SU) is a State Government University established on 1st August 2004 which makes it the youngest state University in Maharashtra. The University was established owing to the long cherished desire of the people of this region. The nearest university in the region was Shivaji University which was 250 km away in Kolhapur. Shivaji University had a Post Graduate Centre in Solapur since 1984 at Kegaon, 9 Km away from Solapur city. Seven postgraduate courses were offered in the P.G. departments. Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde (former Chief Minister of Maharashtra at that time) and Guardian Minister of Solapur District Mr. Vijaysinh Mohite–Patil put efforts to make this centre, the campus of Solapur University and by 22nd July, 2004, they were able to do so. The entire Solapur District is under the jurisdiction of Solapur University. It has about 124 affiliated colleges to it. The University has 35.5 acres of land. The University has adopted the school system and brought various departments under umbrella of seven different schools.
