About Fakir Mohan University

The Fakir Mohan University, Vyasa Vihar, Balasore Orissa was established by the Govt. of Orissa under Section 32 of the Orissa University Act, 1989(Act 5 of 1989)and it was notified vide the Government’s Notification No. 973 dated 3rd July, 1999. The University has also been duly recognized by the UGC Under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act vide the Notification No.F–9–1/2000 (CPP–I) dated 11 Feb.2000 and it is declared eligible to receive Central Financial assistance under sec 12(B) of the UGC Act 1956 vide notification No.F.9-1/2000(CPP-1)dtd-23rd Dec-2005.It has also been accredited by the Association of Indian Universities.

The University is Named after Fakir Mohan Senapati, the legendary father of Oriya literature and one of the builders of modern Orissa. It has been carved out of the Utkal University which owing to unmanageable size (more than 500 colleges and 3.5 lakhs students at the graduate and postgraduate levels) found it very difficult to conduct the examinations properly and publish the results in time besides being unable to provide P.G education to the increasing number of bright candidates intending to have higher education in large number of disciplines. It become the largest University from the point of view of the numerical strength of colleges and students in India. In view of this, the UGC committee which visited U.U in 1985 reported “ the State Government should explore the possibility of establishing an affiliating University, preferable at Balasore, to take care of these affiliating Colleges”. The State, however, ultimately decided to open two University, Fakir Mohan University at Balasore and North Orissa University at Baripada in July 1999.

Presently the university has more than 500 colleges and 3.5 lakhs students at the graduate and postgraduate levels. This university became the largest University from the point of view of the numerical strength of colleges and students in India

DDCE - Fakir Mohan University has Distance Education Facility which is actually a department called Directorate of Distance & Continuing Education.Like IGNOU Fakir Mohan University is providing Facilities to Employed People and those people who can not go to class to do regular classes.

Facilities

Project BRIHASPATI - The University has collaborated with IIT Kanpur in providing E-learning facility after launching of the EDUSAT satellite.

Hostels - There are two Hostels,one for Gents and the other for Ladies

Laboratories - The University has well organized Computer Lab., Biotechnology Lab. and Environmental Science Lab. Besides its Lab in the Dept. of Population Studies is adequate and as per needs. Each Dept. has adequate connectivity facilities

University Library - The University Library has already made a collection of nearly 7000 Books and extends reading room facility, Journal section and reprographic facility. It plans to digitise the library soon.The University has also joined the Project Brihaspati in collaboration with IIT, Kanpur for providing access to outside through visual class room system. It has already developed a good library of books etc. in the relevant subjects.

Central Computing facilities - It is located in Department of Information and communication Technology created out of MP LAD fund. It is used by students, teachers and other members of the University. 20 No. of Pentium-IV with Internet facility, number of software packages and facility for various computer languages are available.

University Sports Council - The University Sports Council conducts Annual athletic meets besides conducting various activities in affiliated colleges. It monitors the participation of students in various inter-University and inter state sports and athletic meets.

NSS - The University organizes various social work/ service programmes in the adopted villages and in the University campus.

University Student's Cultural Council - It Organises cultural programmes.

Personal Advisory System - The University has introduced Personal Advisory System for proper interaction of students and teachers. This promotes student's welfare and atmosphere conducive to study in campus.

Evaluation of teachers - The University implements the Evaluation of teachers by students through a structured questionnaire.

Training and Placement Cell - The University has already interacted with various industries for vocational training and placement of students. The Cell has plans to take up career guidance for students and arrangement of campus interview and organization of Entrepreneurship motivation camp. In 2005 a job mela was organised on 2nd April and representatives of 9 industries attended it.

University Health center - Two honorary Doctors(one Medicine specialist and the other a Gynaecologist) are engaged on part-time basis.

Annual memorial lecture series - The University organises Annual memorial Lecture series in memory of Eminent personalities of the region- Fakir Mohan Senapati, Kabibar Radhanath Ray, Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, and Kantakabi Laxmi kanta.
