About National Institute of Technology - NIT Rourkela

National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in Orissa was established in 1961. It is one of the premier national level Institutions for technical education in the country and is funded by the Government of India. It was then known as Regional Engineering College - Rourkela. Owing to its contribution for providing quality education in the field of Engineering, Science and Technology, NIT Rourkela was accorded the status of Deemed University and renamed as National Institute of Technology Rourkela in 2002. The Institute offers courses leading to the degree of B.Tech. in Mechanical, Electrical, Ceramic, Civil, Chemical, Materials and Metallurgical, Mining, Computer Science and Engineering, Applied Electronics and Communication Engineering. The Institute also offers Post Graduate courses in Engineering & Science leading to the degree of M.Tech. in several disciplines like Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, Chemical and Computer Science and Engineering, Master of Science (in Physics, Chemistry and Applied Mathematics) and Masters in Computer Applications (M.C.A.). The Institute also provides opportunity for part-time M.E. studies, in selected fields and also doctoral research in various subjects. The Institute also undertakes Consultancy and Extension Service, Refresher Courses and other continuing Education and Research programmes, Networking Development etc.

Facilities

Hostels - There are Eight Halls of residence for the students within the Campus: four for male graduates, two for male postgraduates, one for all the girl students and one for married students doing doctorates or research.

Library - It is spread over an area of 4975 square feet with 250 reading seats and AC rooms. It has a collection of 55000 Text and Reference Books.

Computing Facility - The Computing Infrastructure at Computer Centre Consist of Servers, Storage Devices and Thin Clients IBM Servers.The Institute has a enterprise class network infrastructure with structured cabling and single mode fibre optic backbone .The network connects Institute buildings, all departments, telephone exchange, AV hall, lecture gallery, guest house, visitors’ hostel, all hostels, dispensary, estate maintenance unit, stadium and nearby office buildings of the Institute. The Institute has a 4 mbps shared link internet connectivity from STPI. The Internet is available round the clock.

Banking Facilities - Banking is facilitated by State Bank of India through its REC Campus, Rourkela Branch that is located in the NIT premises. ATM facility, Internet Banking, Tele-Banking are available here.

  • Assessing Spontaneous Heating Liability of Coals Using Neural Network and Clean Coal Technology - It will start from 27th to 30th Oct 2010.
  • Environmental Management In Mining & Allied Industries - It will start from 10th to 12th Dec 2010.

TEQI - Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme of Government of India aims to up scale and support ongoing efforts of GOI to improve quality of technical education and enhance existing capabilities of the institutions to become dynamic, demand driven, quality conscious, efficient and forward looking, responsive to rapid economic and technological developments occurring both at National and International levels.

Central Workshop - It is used for fabrication of various articles (furniture) for use in offices, residences, fabrication of various machine components by turning, milling, shaping etc.

Physical Education and Sports - The Institute's Physical Education and Sports department has been conducting Physical Education and Sports Activities, facilities for football, cricket, basketball, hockey, volleyball, badminton, lawn tennis, table tennis, athletics and gymnastics. An attractive stadium with pavilion for 700 spectators with its rest room and well equipped gymnasium is available to improve the physical fitness for the students as well as to engage them during their recreation hours. They have indoor games facilities inside hostel compounds.

Audiovisual Club - The Audiovisual Club provides entertainment to students and staff members, by way of screening Hindi/English/Oriya films once or twice a week. The club is equipped with two 35 mm projectors along with its accessories to screen films. A stand by generator is also connected to meet the requirements during power failure time. The Club also extends financial support to the Electronics and Photography club so as to help the students to develop their skills in photography and electronics hobbies. The Club organises film festivals once or twice a year.
    
SRIC - Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy acts as a facilitating centre in providing assistance to the faculty members of the Institute in communicating with the external sponsors both in the pre – award as well as in the post award stage of the proposal. Sponsored research is defined as those time- bound R&D projects which are sponsored by Government/ National/ International sponsoring agencies, autonomous bodies and private organizations.
    
Placement - A few industries where Institute's students have been placed are TCS, Wipro, Infosys, HCL, ICIL, TISCO, Hindustan Motors, TRL, IPCL, RCF, Hero Honda Motors, INDAL, HPL, IPCL, IOCL, MUL, IOC, HAL, ITC, Asian Paints and other firms of national repute.

Achievements

  • NIT Rourkela was ranked as the second best NIT in India by TEQIP for the year 2009.
  • The Institute has been modernised by two foreign collaborative funding agencies: the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-UK. REC project, and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.
