About Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University

The University of Ajmer was established on 1 August 1987. It's name was changed from University of Ajmer to Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer vide Rajasthan State Gazette dated 5 May, 1992. It is named after great philosopher Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati. The University was registered in the year 1993 under section 12(B) of U.G.C.Act,1956. Since the day of its inception the University was entrusted with a major responsibility of conducting the examination of nearly 1.5 lakh students of colleges spread over the six divisions of the state. In 1990 teaching began in History, Political science , zoology, botany and mathematics departments. In 1991, M. Phil, teaching programmes were initiated by History, Political Science, Botany departments and later promising job oriented courses such as PG diplomas in Environmental Technology, Microbiology and lab. technology and instrumentation were started. In 1993, after shifting to new campus, departments of microbiology, foods and nutrition, applied chemistry, management studies and computer applications were created offering M. Sc., MBA, PG Diploma and Ph. D. programmes. In a short span of seven years academic wing of University came out with enormous research work in the form of publications, Ph. D. thesis and research projects. In 1998 university started PG programme in Environmental Science, and in 2000 PG programmes in Botany Zoology, Business Economics , Commerce, Population Studies, History, Political Science and Computer Science with specialisations that did not exist other colleges in Ajmer. The University has a campus of 142 acres, situated in urban surroundings.It is the largest affiliating University in the state of Rajasthan. There are 214 Government and Private colleges affiliated to this University. These affiliated colleges are spread over 9 districts of the state of Rajasthan. The University conducted examination of 1,35,000 students for various courses during the 2007-08 session.

Location - It is situated near the Ghooghra village on the Pushkar bye pass, Jaipur Road (NH-8). It is seven kilometres from the city of Ajmer.

Facilities

University Central Library - The library, established in 1988, is well functioning totally computerized library. Having the collection of 43000 books; 2000 Ph.D. Theses; 176 current periodicals; 10000 reports of government departments, universities, other departments; 15000 back / old volumes of periodicals; 150 complimentary titles; Reference Volume 3000; Audio-video collections 35; CD 3000; . It is maintaining old newspapers of three years. The library serves to 900 members, including research scholars, faculty members and hundreds of faculty members etc. coming from affiliated colleges and other institutions. It is spread over in 4847 sq. ft. area in three floors, out of which 1500 sq. ft. is only for reading area. The library has 105 reading seats, 12 research cubicles. The library is strong in the collection of computer science, environment studies, chemistry, botany, mathematics, microbiology, food & nutrition, vedic studies, political science, history, economics, management studies in addition to other subjects. All the sections of the library are fully computerized since June 2003, succeeding the U.G.C.'s INFLIBNET program of library automation. The library is also succeeded for UGC-INFONET project for setting-up 256 kbps broadband VSAT connectivity via ERNET India.

Research - Research receives national and international funding from agencies like UGC, AICTE, CSIR, ICSSR, DST, Euro Commission, UNDP, governmental departments etc. Research thrust areas are relevant also to the local / state level needs of the community. Publication of research papers ( 41 in International and 189 in National Journals ) and articles has been done by the Faculty members. About 90 percent teachers are engaged in active research and are guiding M. Phil. and Ph.D. students. Various seminars, workshops and conferences are also held.

Computer Center - It is equipped with 11 computers, which serves the computing needs of the University administration and examination system.

Grievance Redressal System - The University has a formal grievance redressal system in place for students and employees.

Women’s Harassment Removal Committee - It looks after the welfare of the women

Health Care - A health care facility available on the campus, which provides health services by allopath and homoeopath doctors.

Scholarships - The University provides some scholarships and free-ships to students from the financial aid from the State Government specifically for that purpose, from professional faculty funds and some endowments.

Sports Complex - It is known as Eklavya Bhawan
