SRM stands for Sri Ramaswamy Memorial. SRM University is a co-educational private university in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The university has three campuses in Tamil Nadu at Kattankulatur, Kancheepuram district, Ramapuram,Trichy and one in Modinagar, near Delhi. Previously functioning under Anna University, as SRM Engineering College, the institute gained deemed status in 2003-04, and was renamed SRMIST (SRM Institute of Science and Technology) and then eventually called SRM University. The foundation of the university was done in 1968, when Mr. T.R. Pachamuthu started the Florence Nightingale Primary School, the cornerstone of the SRM group of educational institutions. He also founded the Valliammai Society in honour of his mother Mrs. R. Valliammai, the same year. In 1985, the SRM Engineering College was established in Kattankulathur, and soon grew into numerous SRM centers of learning. In 2002, the SRM College of Dentistry was awarded the status of deemed university by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, India. In the same year, the engineering, medical and para-medical colleges of the group were brought under the ambit of SRM Deemed University. In 2003-04 other colleges follow suit. In 2006, the deemed university then attained the status of a full-fledged university, under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. An upgraded syllabus and international teaching methods, designed by SRM's International Advisory Board (IAB), launched SRM University way ahead of the rest. SRM University's 242 acre campus at Kattankulathur, near Chennai is well landscaped with ample greenery - and is connected by road and rail. Kattankulathur campus, Chennai - A vast and the main campus housing the faculties of Engineering, Medicine & Health Sciences, Management and Science & Humanities - the SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Center and the SRM Hotel are also located here.
Ramapuram campus, Chennai - A serene and charming enclave, the SRM Dental College is located here. It consists of 5 academic blocks spread over 25 acres, with all the necessary facilities and infrastructure for medical and health science students.
Modi Nagar campus, Delhi - Spread across 25 acres of land, this campus houses the faculties of Engineering & Technology, Management and Teacher Education.
Trichy campus, Trichy - A new 60-acre campus at Trichy will offer degrees in Medicine, Engineering and Science & Humanities.
Location - The SRM University Main Campus (Kattankulathur) is 40 kms from Chennai city on NH 45, and around 20 kms from Chennai Airport. The nearest Bus stop and Railway station is POTHERI.
Transportation - The University is well connected by road, rail and air.
By Train Those coming from other states in India by train, should get down at the Chennai Central Station, come out and cross the high road through the pedestrian subway and reach PARK suburban metro rail station. Two destination trains are available from Park suburban metro rail station - to (i) Tambaram (ii) Chengalpattu.
(i) If you take the train to Tambaram, then get down at Tambaram and reach the local bus stand there. Take T60 or T60 LSS bus and get down at SRM or Potheri stop. It is a 20 minute travel from Tambaram to reach SRM University. (Total Travel time from Chennai Central Railway Station will be around One Hour).
(ii) If you take the train to Chengalpattu, you can directly reach the SRM or Potheri railway station. SRM University is just opposite to the Potheri railway station.
By Air The nearest railway station from the Chennai Airport is Thrisulam, located just opposite the Airport. Get on a train towards Tambaram and follow the instructions given above for reaching SRM University.
Sciences & Humanities
Facilities Hostels - There are separate hostels for men and women on the campus, with all the necessary facilities. All the hostels of various campuses are well-equipped, with adequate ventilation and lighting facility. . Each room is fitted with tube lights and fans, and each student is provided with a cot, chair and a table. Periodicals and newspapers are supplied to each hostel.
International exchange programs for students and faculty - SRM University has an international network of advisors from universities and industries worldwide - University of London, Queen's University and the Partners International Healthcare (Harvard Teaching Hospitals). This has given SRM an international dimension in terms of knowledge, student exchange programs and joint research.
International Students - SRM earmarks certain percentage of seats for international students which include, foreign citizens, PIO card holders, OCI (Dual Citizens), NRI students and NRI sponsored students under the Foreign/ NRI category. The Admissions are based on merit and marks/ grades obtained in the qualifying examination, availability of seats and on a "First-cum-First-Serve" basis. Placement & Training Cell - The Cell, headed by a Senior Professor, helps students plan their career. It organizes interviews and group discussions - to familiarize students with standard selection procedures and campus interviews - in association with large industrial and commercial firms and corporate bodies. As a result, students of SRM have benefited every year with progressively remunerative and rewarding placements in reputed organizations.
Scholarships - There are various Scholarship schemes and student finance schemes offered by select nationalized and private banks that students can avail of. Scholarship Schemes. SRM University offers scholarships and fee waiver to deserving students on the basis of academic merit, sports and cultural excellence and economic need. In 2007-08, an amount of Rs.5.5 Crores benefited over 750 students in the form of scholarships, tuition waiver, teaching assistance and sponsorships. In 2008-09, over 1500 students benefited from Rs.6 Crores in the form of scholarships, tuition waiver, teaching assistance and sponsorships. SRM Founder's Scholarships, provides educational opportunity to students with an excellent academic record, sports and cultural track record, and to those economically challenged. The Founder's Scholarship includes complete tuition waiver, book fees, hostel and mess fees and transportation with an additional stipend of about Rs.1000/ month. Students can continue to avail this financial assistance throughout the course based on their performance.
SRM University Library - It is one of the best established libraries according to International Standards, the University Library has a large collection of books covering various branches of Engineering and Technology, Medical and Health Sciences and Science and Humanities and its related fields. The library is located in the 15-Storey University Administrative Block, and is spread over Ground + 3 floors of 1.50 Lakh sq ft area. The library building is fully air-conditioned and automated with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, well protected with fire alarms and CCTV security systems and equipped with reading halls in all the floors, with reference collection
ISTE - Indian Society For Technical Education is a national, professional, non-profit making Society registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. The major objective of the ISTE is to assist and contribute in the production and development of top quality professional engineers and technicians needed by the industries and other organizations. ISTE effectively contributes in various missions of the Union Government. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, CTE / DST / MIT / State Governments are well associated with the ISTE for programmes relating to technical education.
Research - The research strategy of SRM University covers all major academic disciplines. Research is specially focused on areas like Nanotechnology, Bio engineering, Energy, Environment, Materials and Embedded systems. Faculty and students are actively involved in research. It is currently involved in a research project on rural healthcare, in collaboration with Queen's University, Canada.
Athletics & Fitness - SRM has excellent sports and recreation facilities on campus, with dedicated facilities for tennis, basketball, badminton, yoga and even horse-riding. Students participate regularly in Inter Collegiate, Inter University and State Level Tournaments and have won laurels for SRM. For students to stay fit and healthy, all hostels are equipped with gym and fitness centre facilities - treadmill, exercise bikes and more of the latest fitness equipment. The central gym for men at SRM is also equipped with body building equipment. All gyms and fitness centres are open both in the morning and evening hours. Yoga sessions are conducted for students to help them maintain both healthy body and mind.
Convenient Educational Bank Loans - Those who aspire to be a part of SRM University can now avail themselves of full educational loans through select banks with which the university has created links. They are: ICICI, SBI, City Union bank, State Bank of Mysore, Corporation Bank and Indian Overseas Bank. The loan can also be availed at the university campus during the counselling and admission sessions. The process is simple and hassle free, so every student has access to financial aid. In fact, during the academic year 2007-08, spot loans sanctioned by the various banks during counselling amounted to INR 75 crores.
Computer Centre - A fully air-conditioned and state-of-the-art computer centre with more than 200 terminals functions at the SRM campus. Students are encouraged to make full use of the facility to train themselves in modern computer applications and software development - and for academic learning. Students can also acquire practical experience in hardware technology as quite a number of computers are assembled internally at the college workshop.
Transportation - The SRM group runs a fleet of buses for transporting students to and from the city and to other areas. There are two vans and several cars too. Public transport buses and trains also ply to points near the campuses.
Institutional Visits - SRM has tie-ups with various organizations, so students of various disciplines can visit their plants to get a direct insight into the multi-functional processes at these organizations. In-plant training is also organized whenever necessary.
Healthcare - Students of SRM have access to medical facilities at various places, apart from a 24-hour dispensary which has been set up on campus with a doctor on call. The SRM Hospital at West Mambalam has facilities for several diagnostic procedures such as ECG, X-Ray and laboratory investigation. Health insurance cover for all students is one of the additional services under active consideration.
Shopping - A mini supermarket functions within the campus, to supply necessities. The canteen also offers a range of snacks and beverages.
Banking - Nationalized banks run extension counters at the Kattankulathur and Ramapuram premises, making it convenient for students and staff to transact business at the campus itself. Prayer Halls - There are prayer halls on campus, for all the major religions.
