About Tripura University

Higher education in Tripura had a late start. Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College, the first and the only degree college in the State, started functioning under the University of Calcutta only in 1947. There was many attempts to establish higher educational institution in Tripura but they did not materialise. Tripura was sanctioned by the UGC in 1976 a post-graduate wing of the Calcutta University, named Calcutta University Post Graduate Centre (CUPGC). Taking into consideration the long cherished demands of the students community, growing aspirations of the people at large and also acknowledging the present and future needs of education in the state, the State Government took the initiative to pass the Tripura University Act in the Assembly in 1987 and the first University in the state came into being on 2nd October 1987, the birth day of Gandhiji, the ‘Father of the Nation’. The dreams of thousands of people were at last fulfilled.

Consequent upon the merger of the CUPGC (Calcutta University Post Graduate Centre) in the Tripura University and gradual shifting of the campus from College Tilla to its new site at Suryamaninagar, all the existing colleges of Tripura also came under the charge the University. The university has moved into its own campus at Suryamaninagar. Apart from running the academic programmes of the 16 PG departments, and a number of programmes offered by different departments, directorates, centres etc., the University provides academic support to the 24 affiliated colleges in the state by way of formulating curricula, supervision of academic programmes and conducting examinations etc. Tripura University has been converted to a Central University w.e.f 2nd July,2007 under the Tripura University Act,2006 as enacted by the Parliament. At present Tripura University provides post-graduate courses on sixteen subjects while the various Departments, Directorates and Centres within it provide 38 degree courses.
