About Atal Bihari Vajpayee - Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management - ABV-IIITM

The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior, is a Deemed University, which is the first IIIT established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in 1997, as an initiative to foster information technology (IT) and management education in India. In 1992, the Ministry of HRD set-up a high powered committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. P G Reddy. The team reviewed the overall scenario in the country with regard to software education and training and recommended, setting up of Advanced Information System Institutes on the pattern of IITs and IIMs in the country and after further proceedings, IIITM was established in 1997 as a centrally funded, autonomous institution registered under the Societies' Registration Act and governed by its Board of Governors. The foundation stone of the Institute was laid on Jan 17, 1996. It is popularly known as IIITM Gwalior or IIITM-G. The Institute was accorded the status of Deemed University in the year 2001. The Institute Campus is spread over 160 acres (0.65 km2) amidst picturesque landscape in the foothills of the Gwalior Fort. The Campus is self-contained and equipped with all the state of the art facilities necessary for the all-round development of the student's personalities. It provides Integrated Postgraduate Programmes like M.Tech., MBA and Ph D. The Academic block is divided into 5 sections viz.A, B, C, D, E-Blocks.

Integrated Post Graduate Programme (IPG) : B.Tech(ICT) + M.Tech. (ICT) / B.Tech(ICT) + MBA.

This is a five year integrated programme with a choice of following to dual degrees:

  • B.Tech(ICT) + M.Tech(ICT.
  • B.Tech.(ICT) + MBA.

Hostels - IIITM is a residential Institute and requires that all students stay in the campus throughout their tenure. For this purpose, Hostel accommodation has been made available to all. The Hostels are self-contained, having amenities such as reading rooms, facilities for indoor games like table tennis and badminton, a lounge and a dining hall with messing arrangements. Separate Hostels are provided for boys and girls, 3 Boys Hostel and 1 Girls Hostel. All Hostels provide single occupancy rooms furnished with the basic necessities. All the rooms in the hostel are going to be connected with the internet. A new boys Hostel (BH-2) has been formally opened. It is presently being occupied by the IPG 1st year, M.Tech. 1st year and PhD students.  BH-1 is occupied by the IPG 3rd year, IPG 4th year, IPG 5th year and M.Tech. 2nd-year students; BH-3 by the IPG 2nd year students. The Hostels are having facilities for playing indoor games. Every Boys hostel has a badminton court. The oldest boys Hostel has facilities for Table Tennis and a Pool Table. Other outdoor sports facilities are available in the Campus.

Library - The Library has a total collection of 16,000 documents (books, back volumes of journals, government publications, technical reports, conference proceedings, non-book materials etc.,). The Library subscribes to around 10 online databases, 15 print journals. It also receives around 150 Newsletters and has 200 Annual Reports from public and private organizations. The Non-book materials collection includes 816 Text Books CDs, 921, Lecture VCDs & DVDs, 75 Video Cassettes, etc. Most of the library activities are computerized using "Alice Window 6.0", & Softgranth.

Laboratories - IIITM has more than 11 laboratories for various disciplines like operating systems, database systems, software engineering, CRM, Networking protocols and Multimedia. Computer Laboratories have more than four hundred Pentium based computer systems from different manufacturers such as Compaq, Digital, HCL, Silicon Graphics etc. There are fifteen servers at the moment that provide various computing services to the Institute.

Mess - New Mess has been opened up in the newly constructed boys Hostel. The Institute will soon have 3 new Messes for the boys.

Gym - The old Gym has been renovated with new machines and equipment. The Gym has been equipped with ceiling-high glasses to give the look and feel of a professional gym.

Recreation - Students are provided with recreational facilities like TV room which consists of a TV connected with TATA Sky. There are 12 major English Magazines, two major Hindi magazines, nine major English newspapers and one major Hindi newspaper available in the Hostel.

Bank - The Institute has Bank of India's extension counter in the campus itself so that the students can do banking without the hassles of wasting time in commuting to distant banking centres: BOI is shortly going to open the core banking facility. Faculty and non-Faculty members can use these facilities. Also, two ATM counters are proposed Bank of India and State Bank of India in the campus itself

Post Office - The Institute has a post office counter in the campus itself, Students enjoy this facility without hitting the traffic and streets of the city and the save time for their academic, cultural or sports activities.

Dispensary - The Institute is shortly going to open a dispensary in the campus. The dispensary would be headed by an experienced Doctor, The emergency medical facilities would be made available round-the-clock with 24 hour ambulance service for taking serious patients from campus to nearby Hospitals. Medical examination of newly admitted Integrated postgraduate (IPG), postgraduate (PG) and research scholars as well as members of staff newly recruited to the Institute, is conducted. Medical aid is also provided during Sports Meets etc.

Transport - The Institute is well connected to the city. The Institute provides bus facility from the Institute's main gate to the city. MPRTC buses are also available from the Institute's main gate. The Institute is on the highway to Agra, and the buses on this route can be accessed from the main gate. Gola ka Mandir, a spot about 2-3 km from the Institute, is very well connected with each type of transport and connection both the airport and railway station.

Seminar Hall - There are two Seminar Halls for the classes of IPG 1st year and 2nd year mainly.

Classrooms - All the Classrooms are centrally air-conditioned.

Sports - In the campus there are separate grounds for cricket, football, basketball, lawn tennis and so on.

Faculty Residence - The Faculty Residence is also included in the campus.

Auditorium - The Institute has a state of the art Auditorium with projector room facility also.

Scholarships - Students of the Institute are eligible for the following scholarship:

  • Andhra Pradesh State Govt. Scholarship - Students from Andhra Pradesh joining this institute for the 5 years integrated PG course are eligible for Pratibha Scholarship of Rs.20,000/- per annum of the Govt. of AP.

MDP - The Institute conducts Management Development Programmes (MDPs) through which it endeavours to bring to the fore latest developments in the areas of Management and Information Technology. These programmes are well received by professionals of the corporate world, government departments and educational institutions.

TFP - Training For Professionals is a novel concept initiated by ABV-Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Gwalior in association with Department of Information Technology, Government of India is dedicated to guiding the professionals all around the country for excellence in Technology and Management and, to bridge the gap between their education in the undergraduate institution and the requirement of Information Technology Enabled Services. Loan For Students - Many financial institutions are willing to help students by providing monetary aids. Some of the institutions that have come forward for loan facilities are Bank of India, State bank of India, Allahabad bank, Andhra bank etc. For more information regarding student loans, banks may be contacted individually.

Research and Consultancy Projects - ABV-IIITM undertakes research and consultancy projects that put up unique and never seen before challenges before the students.

Extra-Curricular Activities - The Institute organises various events.

Some of these are:

  • Aurora - It is the annual cultural festival which celebrates the spirit of teamwork and excellence. Attracting participation from different colleges, it provides a platform for students to showcase their talents in front of an assorted audience from all over the country. The three-day extravaganza is marked with a rich assortment of events designed to capture the essence of the new generation’s enthusiasm and vigour. The major events which add lustre to the fest are Personality Contest, Fashion Parade, Kavi Sammelan, Antakshari, dancing, singing competitions and many more.
  • Infotsav - It is the annual Technology and Management Festival of the institute. It celebrates the spirit of the Institute, embarked by its fight for creativity, excellence and being a leader. The festival witnesses big corporate names as sponsors and big institutes as participants, ranging from IITK, IITB, NITIE, IITD etc. The excellence has always been rewarded, and the witness is a huge prize money that is at stake every year. Infotsav'06 had a special feature of organizing "e-Governors Summit'06: Citizen-Centric PPP Approach".
  • Twaran - The Institute organizes an annual inter IIIT sports meet known as Twaran . This gives an opportunity for all the members of the IIIT/IIITM family to come together and show their skills in sports.The sport society is a centre of non-stop activity. Twaran, provides the students a refreshing break from their hectic academic schedule, the week-long meet attracts a large number of students.
  • Urja - The sports society is the centre of non-stop activity. It organizes various informal events, round the year. Formal competitions are conducted on a regular basis, finally culminating in the annual inter batch sports meet.   • Alumni Meet - The meet acts as a platform for the present students to be inspired by the successful Alumni and share information on the current industry scenario.
  • Yoga and Meditation Club - "Yoga Karmasu Kaushalam" (i.e. "Perfection in activities is Yoga"), is the founding principle of the club. The objective is to integrate the entire consciousness through control over the entire mind and the thought process. Only a relaxed and emotionally stable person is able to realize one's true potential and handle the most perplexing modern-day problems.
  • AASF - Abhigyan Abhikaushlam Students' Forum has been set up in the institute under which various events like programming contests, quizzes, HIQs and workshops are conducted.
  • SF-FOSS - Students' Forum for Free/Open Source Software aims at developing Open sourcing solutions for various problems existing in the present date. The forum is highly committed to improving the present day technology as well as the society in the long term by using Open sourcing norms.
  • La Vista - It is the informal students' magazine of the Institute. The magazine provides insight into the life of students. It gives expression to their feelings and believes in numerous subjects.
  • MAD Club - It is the Music-Arts-Dramatics club of the Institute. The club conducts numerous events throughout the year related to music, arts and dramatics. The club has been formed for cultural excellence of the students of the Institute.
  • HIQ - HIQ is a Community which has been found as the knowledge band of the Institute. It is a place where the students come together to share the best among them.
  • Wanita - Wanita in Indian languages means woman. This program is a women-specific programme to empower them with IT skills and enable them to become an entrepreneur in the field of IT-enabled services such as content creation, web design, e-tutoring, translation etc. As per observation from similar programmes for entrepreneurial motivation in the field of IT for formulating projects to set-up a start-up firm which includes the details of the products/services to be delivered, the technology to be employed, information on financial requirement and source of financing as well as the market trend it is observed that the women entrepreneurship in the field of IT is very similar irrespective of the age, the marital status and educational qualification. Even new literate have been successful entrepreneurs under this programme.

Placement - Some of the regular recruiters are 3i Infotech, ICICI Prudential, Amdocs, Indian Overseas Bank, Aptech, ITC Infotech etc. To nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship among some talented and ambitious students, the concept of Incubation Centre at academic Institute has gained ground. IIITM also wishes to take a lead and earmark space, infrastructure and professional support for nurturing new ideas and also for maturing nascent ideas up to maturity levels. Discussions have been initiated with STPI.

Other Facilities - There is a Canteen, a Dairy Shop, Juice Centre and other facilities for addressing the students' daily requirements in the campus

Achievements

  • Team "brute force" - Team "brute force" from this institute was the winner of ACM ICPC Asia Region Contest 2008 in which nearly all IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani teams participated. It was an IT programming contest held in Kanpur for the Asian continent, the University of Dhaka got the second position and the national university of Singapore got the third.
  • International Linkage - The Institute has established its presence internationally by entering into a collaboration with the institutions and organizations outside the country. The objectives of such collaboration are faculty and student exchange programmes, joint research, seminars, web-based distance learning programmes to provide business solutions to industry problems. Students have blazed the trail to record their presence in the international arena.

  • Alumni - Presence of the Institute's Alumni can be felt at renowned international campuses like University of British Columbia, Georgia Tech etc. Students from the diverse region have taken admission in the Institute ranging from the US to Middle East.
  • Unique Institute - It is the only institution of its kind in India, combining both IT and Management.
