About University of Petroleum and Energy Studies - UPES

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) is a Statutory University legislated by the State Government of Uttaranchal through an Act (UPES Act, 2003). It is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and is the ‘First University under Public-Private Partnership’. It was founded by the ‘Hydrocarbons Education and Research Society (HERS)’, composed of a group of eminent individuals from the oil and gas industry in 2003. It is a unique institute in the sense that it specifically offers courses catering to the energy sector; which makes it first if its kind. It has also been included in the List of Universities maintained and approved by the UGC under section 2(f) of the UGC Act. UPES is a non profit organisation registered under the Societies Act, 1860 dedicated to promoting education and training in Energy and allied sectors. UPES offers over 42 graduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in Oil & Gas, Power, Aviation, Shipping, Automobile, Infrastructure, Electronics, IT and Logistics & Supply Chain. The mother campus of the University, christened as ‘Energy Acres’, is spread over 30 acres of the lush green Pondha Valley in the foothills of the Aravallis. A Wi-Fi enabled facility, ‘Energy Acres’ provides an invigorating academic and research environment. It is recognised by NAAC and has been granted membership of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) from November 2009 onwards. It is also a member of International Association of Universities (IAU). It has its offices in Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and 1 overseas office in Canada. It has its Authorized Counselling Offices in Bangalore, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kannur, Kochi, Kottayam, Thrissur and Trivandrum.

- The UPES campus is located in Pondha valley at the foothills of the Himalayas in Dehradun, Uttarakhand

Facilities

Hostels and Canteens - Hostel facilities are provided to students on a 'first-come first-served basis' with preference given to outstation students. The hostels provide all the required facilities like a separate reading room with latest magazines and newspapers, canteen and cafeteria facilities on the campus. Two new blocks have recently been constructed. In addition, the university has also tied up with private hostels in the city, after necessary pre-screening, to offer appropriate accommodation outside the campus.

Library – It has a seating capacity of more than 100 students and contains over 40000 volumes of publications including books, standards, reports, proceedings and more than 240 National and International Journals. It also has a rich collection of online resources in terms of CDs, access to specialised portals on Oil & Gas and Power related information, WestLaw International for UK law information, legalpundits.com and Manupatra. UPES has also acquired Institutional Memberships of the British Council Library, the American Centre Library, the AIMA Library, the Central Secretariat Library and DELNET.

CCE - Centre for Continuing Education offers education through ‘Distance Learning Mode’. The centre is helpful to all those professionals who are eager to pursue further education, enhance their skills and deploy the thus enhanced skills to execute challenging professional tasks. It provides Part-time Ph.D in (management, law, engineering, science) and M.B.A. (logistics, supply & chain, oil & gas) for Working Professionals.

CAS - Centre for Aviation Studies offers education in Aviation through ‘Distance Learning Mode’. It offers M.B.A. (aviation management) for Working Professionals, B.B.A (aviation operations) and Lateral Entry B. Sc. Advanced Computing Centre - UPES centre consists of a network of more than 2500 computers. A fully wireless (Wi-Fi) computer network covers the entire campus – in all indoor classroom/ laboratory locations, student breakout areas, common areas and student residences on campus. This network connects all campus computers to each other and the Internet. The network runs on VmWare and hosts over 35 virtual servers. A fully integrated learning management system (Moodle) provides a knowledge repository for academic resources. Available 24x7, it also provides a platform for online testing and assessment.

Laboratories – The University has 70 spacious and well equipped laboratories, out of which 61 laboratories cater to the needs of students and remaining, are actively engaged for Research and Development. Some of the laboratory equipments available here are - melting point measurement apparatus, polar meters, spectrophotometer, digital balances etc.

UPES Scholarship – The scholarships are awarded purely on the basis of academic merit cum means and are at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Committee, whose decision is final and binding.

25% concession on Tuition Fee for Uttarakhand domicile students on merit-cum-means basis, to be decided by the University, subject to fulfilment of the following conditions by the student:

  • The student’s gross annual family income to be not more than Rs. 2 lakhs. The student should possess necessary documents attesting the fact.
  • The student should be in possession of a valid domicile certificate from the State of Uttarakhand.
  • The student should have done schooling & passed Class X and Class XII from Uttarakhand (this condition may be relaxed for wards of defence personnel subject to production of posting certificate outside the state issued by competent authority).

100% concession on Tuition Fee for general category students, subject to fulfilment of the following conditions by the student:

  • For B. Tech. programs (all streams), the student should have secured a minimum aggregate of 85% marks in class XII with a minimum aggregate of 90% marks in PCM.
  • For B.B.A. and Integrated LL. B. Programs, the student should have secured a minimum aggregate of 90% marks in class XII.

Education Loans - UPES has a formal tie-up with two of India’s leading nationalized banks. State Bank of India and Oriental Bank of Commerce to facilitate students’ access to easy education loans. The Education loans provide coverage for expenses including program fees and hostel fees.

Reservations / Quotas - 10% of seats in all programs (subject to merit) are reserved for domiciled students from Uttarakhand subject to production of domicile certificate. However, in event of the seats remaining unfilled, the same shall be treated as unreserved. 3% of seats in all programs (subject to merit) are reserved for Differently Abled Students with minimum physical disability to the extent of 40%. The Differently Abled candidates are required to submit a certificate from the authorized Medical Doctor/Hospital indicating the extent of physical disability. However, in event of seats remaining unfilled, the same shall be treated as unreserved.

Research - UPES is recognized as a Research Institution by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), a part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This enables UPES to receive grants under the CSIR system.

Lecture Halls - The University has more than 100 Wi-Fi enabled, multimedia equipped, smart lecture. All the classrooms are equipped with ceiling mounted LCD / DLP projectors, computers and PA system with wireless microphones. The University has also introduced multi-purpose SmartCards for attendance, payment transactions and access control.

Sports and Recreation – Some of the Sports Facilities include gymnasium, multi-purpose sports ground for outdoor games like football / cricket / hockey, volleyball, badminton courts, athletics track, cemented cricket pitch etc. It also has facilities for indoor games such as table tennis, carom, pool, billiards etc.

PDP - Personality Development Program attempts to raise the level of self-assurance, attitude and overall personality of each student. It is conducted for all new joining students for a period of 6 to 10 days, comprising of interactive sessions and outdoor activities. This extensive grooming training capsule involves 2 Phases: 1) PEP is organised for the students at the time of joining the university and 2) PSI (Placement Selection Improvement program), at the time of passing out the university. PSI is conducted for all the undergraduate and postgraduate students, for a period of 7 days which includes 5 days for interactive sessions and 2 days for Mock Interviews. During the interactive sessions, all the topics related to Placement and Selection of a student, are covered so as to prepare him/her industry-ready.

Extra Curricular Activities - UURJA is the annual cultural youth festival of UPES students. For all-round personality development UPES student clubs actively involve students to exploit their potential. Some of the students clubs are ‘Logistikas’ Club for students of M.B.A. Logistics & Supply Chain Management, ‘Adventure Club’, E-360, The Club Economics and SAE Collegiate Club.

Seminars, Conferences and Workshops - A variety of seminars, workshops, conferences and training sessions are organised throughout the year for students and faculty alike to provide an opportunity to interact closely with the extended academic fraternity and doyens of industry. Such events also propel camaraderie amongst the students as they are instrumental in organising these events. It also helps build students’ confidence to present their ideas in front of an informed audience.

Partnerships - UPES has an understanding with some of world renowned universities for holding joint seminars, faculty exchange programs, professional development & continuing education, joint research, review of Ph.D theses and mutual exchange of scientific publications.

Industry Tours - Industry tours are an integral part of the UPES curriculum. These tours ensure that students gain practical insights to industry operations in their respective areas of specialization.

Placement - Summer Internships are mandatory for all graduate and post graduate students. The minimum duration of Summer Internships is 8 weeks. All students are required to make a presentation at the end of their internship. The highest CTC offered so far is 16 lacs PA to few B.Tech students by one of the international major with an average of Rs 4 lacs PA across all programs. Similarly in MBA the highest CTC was offered Rs 9 lacs PA by IOCL with an average of Rs 4 lacs PA across all programs . M.Tech is also doing well this year with a highest CTC of Rs 10 lacs offered by HPCL and an average of Rs. 4.5 Lacs PA.

  • UPES has been awarded by B-School Affairs at Suntech, Singapore under the category of Asia's Best B-School Awards.
  • It has also been awarded the ‘Best B-School with Excellent Industry Interface 2009’ - Awarded at the Dainik Bhaskar B School Leadership Awards in Mumbai.
  • Its campus is ISO 9001:2008 certified.
  • Under its Community Outreach Programme, UPES has adopted 5 nearby village schools. UPES is providing material support in the form of computers, furniture, stationery, etc. and fully supporting educational expenses of 11 girls adopted from nearby villages. UPES also runs a rigorous 10-day coaching camp in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to prepare class 10 and 12 students from nearby villages for the AIEEE examination. This service is provided gratis and includes free boarding facilities.
