About The University of Burdwan

The University of Burdwan was established under West Bengal Act XXIX of 1959 as a teaching and affiliating University on 15 June, 1960 with six P.G. Departments & thirty undergraduate colleges spread over five districts that came under the jurisdiction of the University. Now, the University is offering 30 P.G. Programmes and there are 122 Affiliated colleges (including Degree Colleges, B.Ed. Colleges & Private Professional Institutes) under its umbrella. The districts of Burdwan, Hooghly (except Srirampur sub-division), Birbhum, Bankura and Purulia come under its jurisdiction. The administrative wing of the University is located in the majestic Bardhaman Maharaja’s Rajbati Palace while the academic departments are situated in the Golapbag (Rose Garden) campus,about a mile distance from the Administrative complex. The Governor of West Bengal is the Chancellor of the University. The University of Burdwan is one of the premier institutes of higher education in eastern India. Through the undergraduate affiliated colleges, the university provides higher education in all major subjects under Science, Arts, Management, Law, Commerce, Fine Arts & Music, Engineering & Technology and Medicine faculties to the urban and rural youth. At its campus, as also in some constituent colleges, postgraduate courses in all the major subjects in Science, Arts & Commerce faculties are offered. Also, recognizing the strong social need for providing education in upcoming subjects, the University had launched certain professional, specialized and emerging courses through distance mode.

Facilities

University Institute of Technology - The institute enjoys the status of a Professional College run and managed by the University. With the approval of Government of West Bengal and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), three graduate engineering courses, viz., Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics &  Communication Engineering and Information Technology were introduced from the session 2000-2001. Directorate of Distance Education - It was the first of its kind in West Bengal. It evolved and developed since its inception and now in 2008 it has a good infrastructure of its own. Situated in the Golapbag Campus, the DDE has a beautiful building of its own. It houses all the administrative departments of the directorate and holds counselling sessions for different courses it runs. At present DDE conducts a total of fourteen courses, of which ten are post-graduate and four under-graduate. There are eight conventional courses [MA in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit, M.Com. and M.Sc. / MA in Mathematics] and two professional courses at the post-graduate level [MBA in Insurance & Risk Management and PG Degree in Remote Sensing & Geographic Information System (GIS)]. Four professional courses offered at the under-graduate level are: B.Sc. Hons. in Bioinformatics, B.Sc. Hons. in Environmental Science, BA Hons. in Interior Design and BA Hons. in Fashion & Apparel Design. ASC - The Academic Staff College, Burdwan University was established in the year 1989 to cater for the vital need for improving the status of the teacher as well as to inculcate dynamism in higher education system by providing opportunities for professional and career advancement as proposed in the National Policy on Education, 1986 (NPE). The main objectives of our ASC are to enable the newly appointed teacher to understand the significance of education in general and higher education in particular in the global and Indian context. Secondly to understand the linkage between education & economic and socio-cultural development and thirdly to acquire and improve basic skills of teaching keeping abreast with the development in subject.

Scholarships - Needy students are provided with free ship and half free ship in their tuition fees. Meritorious students are provided with National Merit Scholarship money @ Rs. 750/- per month per student for thirty students every year. Also SC/ST students may avail special scholarships from the Government which are duly forwarded by this University. Also Biri Workers / sons & daughters of Biri Workers and Minorities students can avail special scholarship from various agencies. The scholarship amounts are subject to change.  

Central Library - The University has its Central library located at their Golapbag campus and departmental seminar library facilities are also available for the use of students. The Central library is accessible by the students from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Achievements

  • The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of UGC designated it as a B++ University in 2001 for its effective role in higher education and research in different disciplines.
