About National Institute of Technology - NIT Silchar

National Institute of Technology, Silchar is an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act. It was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. It was as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Assam under the administration of a society registered under society registration Act XXI of 1860. The college was transformed into National Institute of Technology in the year 2002, and bestowed with the status of Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. A number of Post-Graduate courses have been approved by the AICTE and are expected to start shortly. It is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 600 acres (2.43 km2) of land on the outskirts of Silchar along the banks of river Barak. The Institute has provided space to Indian Meteorology Department and Indian Geomagnetic Observatory to set up their laboratories within the campus. Both the organizations are collecting data regularly.

Location - The Institute is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8 kilometres from the southern outskirts of Silchar city.

Transportation

1.  Air Service - Air India operates daily flights between Silchar and Kolkata. There are also direct flights to Silchar from Guwahati. Moreover, flight services are present between Silchar and Imphal. Air Deccan is also in operation nowadays with their regular flight service between Silchar and Kolkata. Silchar airport is at Kumbhirgram and local buses and taxis directly connect the airport with Silchar city.

2.  Train Service - A Railway Line connects Silchar to Guwahati and the rest of the country via Lumding. Daily trains are available between Silchar and Lumding and the railway tracks are of metre gauge kind. Lumding is well-connected on the rail-route with Guwahati. Silchar railway station is in the city centre.
 
3.  Road Service - Silchar has a road link with Guwahati via Shillong. However, the road gets blocked by landslides during the rainy season (July-August) although the blockade rarely lasts more than a day. Numerous deluxe buses and taxis ply along the 340 km long National Highway connecting Silchar and Guwahati. On completion of the East-West corridor, Guwahati will be connected with Silchar by a 4 lane highway which will significantly reduce the time taken to ply between the two cities (currently 12 hours).

Facilities

Hostels - NIT Silchar being a residential institute, has got Seven Boys’ Hostels and Two Girls’ Hostels.

Library - The Central Library has a collection of 62050 Books, 2024 CD ROM, 909 Video cassettes, 3721 Back Volumes, 8836 Book Bank General, 4901 Book Bank SC/ST, 624 Book Bank SC, 512 Book Bank ST, 8621 ISI Code (Printed), 338 Annual Reports/ Technical Reports/ Proceedings and 114 Indian Journals. The Library has been fully automated with Libsys software & implemented RFID & DVR Technology for security purpose under TEQIP grant. The Library has become first library in the entire NE Region to implement RFID & DVR Technology. The Library staffs have successfully completed two projects entitled ‘Virtual Classroom’ & ‘Developing a Digital Library’ sponsored by MHRD, Govt. of India under MODROB Scheme. Under the project the Library has established first ever Digital Library in an educational institution in North East India & has implemented the e-learning solution in the Institute. Computer Centre - The Institute Computing Facility includes high-end workstations and Intel Pentium based Personal Computers. All the Computing resources of the Institute are connected through a gigabit backbone LAN. The Institute has its Internet Access facility through a 2-MBPS leased line circuit from M/S. BSNL and a 64 KBPS SCPC VSAT Link from ERNET. It is planned to enhance the 64 KBPS SCPC VSAT into a 1 MBPS DAMA VSAT for additional bandwidth for Internet access during the current year. Faculty members have been provided with a Desktop PC with Internet Connectivity. During the 2006, Internet connectivity has been extended to Students’ Hostels.

Workshops - The Workshop of the Mechanical Engineering Department acts as a Central Workshop of the Institute.

Facilities:

  • It has Machine, Wielding, Fitting, Carpentry, Smithy, Pattern making and Foundry Shops.
  • The Workshop has Centre Lathes, Turret Lathe, Milling machines (horizontal, vertical & universal), Drilling machines (sensitive, polar & radial), Slotting machine, Grinder Pedestal, Surface Grinder M/C, Tools and Cutter Grinder Shaper machine, Planner machine, Power saw, MIG wielding machine, TIG wielding set, Motor Generator wielding set, Wood Turning Lathe, Electric furnace, Thickness Planner, Smithy Hearth furnace etc.
  • Common Workshop Classes are held in the Workshop along with Workshop Classes for higher semester of Mechanical Engineering branch.
  • Different Project Works for the Undergraduate Students are also held in the Workshop.
  • The Workshop is well equipped for the project works of the PG students of the Department.

Reservation - 15 per cent of seats are reserved for SC and 7.5 per cent are reserved for ST candidates. 24 seats (over and above sanctioned intake) are reserved for foreign and other category students for 2006-07.4 (four) seats are reserved for handicapped candidates against Assam open quota within the overall allotment of Assam.

Bank - A fully computerized full-fledged core-banking branch of State Bank of India operates in the campus.

Hospital - All the staff and students of the Institute avail medical aid from the dispensary. The Institute also has an ambulance for carrying patients to Silchar Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.

Shopping Centre - A portion of the old LTD building houses General Provision Stores, PCOs, Fax Centres, DTP Centers, Bookshop, etc.

Post Office - The Institute has got a sub Post Office within the campus. The sub Post Office has facilities like registration, money order, and speed post.

Games and Sports Facilities - The Institute has a playground measuring 150m X 90m with facility for playing football, Cricket, Hockey, and other games. The Institute is also planning to construct a Mini Sports Complex for providing various types of outdoor and indoor games to students of this Institute. NIT Silchar also has a hard court for playing basketball and is provided with hard courts for playing Volleyball and Badminton. It has got a Lawn Tennis court within the Campus.

Students Activities - Regular Events like Inter-Hostel Tournaments in various games took place during the year under review as well. Besides this, students participate in competitions organized on the occasions of Republic Day, Independence Day, etc. Various quizzes, debates and technical competitions are held under the banner of various societies. NITS also organizes Annual Technical and Cultural Festivals respectively called the 'Technoesis' and 'Incandescence' where students enhance their technical as well as cultural skills.

Industry Institute Partnership Cell - Industry Institute Partnership Cell is a Cell funded by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), functioning in order to establish a platform for enhancing relationship between the institute and industries, thereby increasing the opportunities for the students of our college for internships, live projects and to acquaint the students beforehand with the demands of the corporate atmosphere.

Training and Internship - Summer Projects in the final and pre-final year enable the students to gain hand-on experience. On completion of their projects students’ need to prepare a project report and then present a seminar on the basis of which they are evaluated. A student is allowed to choose his area of interest in which he desires to take a project. According to his option suitable project or internship is arranged by the Training and Placement Cell in a particular organization or institute.
Some of the organizations that offer the students internship/projects/training are: Oil And Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, NHPC, JCB, Delhi Metro, John Deere, M N Dastur etc.

Placement Procedure

  • Invitation is sent to the company for being a part of the NIT Silchar Placement process.
  • On obtaining the organization’s intent to participate in the Placement process, the T & P will send a Job Notification Form (JNF) to the company via e-mail. The same can also be downloaded from the website.
  • The company needs to complete the Job Notification Form (JNF) to communicate the possibilities offered to the candidate.
  • The Dates for the campus interview are allotted by T & P on the basis of information provided in the JNF.

The dates are allotted on the basis of:

  1. Students’ ranking of the company.
  2. Compensation package.
  3. Career prospects.
  4. Student intake.
  • The company visits the campus on the mutually agreed date and conducts aptitude / technical tests / personal interviews / group discussions as part of their preferred selection procedure.

Achievements

  • According to DataQuest 2009, NIT Silchar ranks 8th among all NITs and 31st among all Engineering Colleges in India.
  • It has been identified as a Centre of Excellence by the Government of India.
