About MIT University

University of Technology and Management (UTM) is a State Private University specialising in technical and management education at the graduate and postgraduate level. It has been established under Meghalaya Act (No. 3 of 2011) legislated by Meghalaya Assembly and notified vide Meghalaya Govt. Order dated May 17, 2011. UTM has been setup in accordance with Section 2(f) of the UGC Act. University of Technology and Management, Meghalaya has been established and managed by Hydrocarbons Education and Research Society (HERS), a non-profit society.  The society has successfully established the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun and Indian School of Petroleum and Energy, Delhi. One of the major objectives to establish the university is to impart high quality education and the economic development of North-East India and the nation as a whole. The headquarter of the University is Shillong and the territorial jurisdiction of the university extends to the state of Meghalaya. UTM offers cutting edge programs in Media, Communication, Digital, Travel, Tourism and Technology streams. UTM follows semester system for all programmes. It is operating out of a 30,000 plus, sq. ft. area, in terms of campuses, between two prominent buildings of the city. Its campuses are located at Dhankheti and Lummawrie (laitmukrah main road)

Evaluation System – The system comprises:

  • Continuous internal assessment: (30% weightage)
  • Mid Semester Examination: (20% weightage)
  • Semester End examinations – both theory & practical: (50% weightage)
  • Instructor-led evaluation
  • Relative Grading system on 0-4 point scale

Transportation

I.  By Road

Shillong can be reached by taxi from Guwahati, which is nearly 100 kms away from Shillong. UTM Campuses are approximately 2.5 km away from bus/taxi stand at police bazaar. Shillong bus stand is located at the city centre and regular bus services from Guwahati are available. The State Road Transport Public buses and the private tourist bus providers operate bus services from Shillong to the many cities in Meghalaya and the neighbouring states.

II.  By Train

Nearest railhead to Shillong is Guwahati, which is at a distance of 100 kms. The Paltan Bazaar Railway Station in Guwahati is a major railway junction on the North-East Frontier Railway. Guwahati is well connected with all the major railheads of India.

III.  By Air

Shillong Airport at Umroi connects only to Kolkata. Guwahati is the nearest major airport. Guwahati Airport is well connected to many major cities in India.

Facilities at UTM, Shillong

Library – The library has a collection of 1430 reference books and 4511 book bank books.

Wi-fi Campus – The whole campus is Wi-Fi enabled.

Classrooms – The University has Wi-Fi enabled, multimedia equipped, smart lecture halls that makes it highly inter active and encourages the students to attend classes.

Academic Collaborations – The University has a few collaborations in academics.

These collaborations are:

  • With IBM India, Bangalore for providing B. Tech programmes (Cloud Computing / Retail Informatics). These courses are provided through UTM - IBM Centre for Information Technology (CIT). The centre provides theoretical knowledge augmented by project-based, practical application and system knowledge which is in tandem with present day IT industry.
  • With Russian New University (RosNOU), Moscow for joint twining of academic and research programmes, faculty and student exchange etc.

iCOS - The Innovation Centre for Open Standards (iCOS) is an online platform - http://www.icos.in. The students who enroll for CIT courses are offered access to online course material, discussion forums and an online collaborative environment.

Laboratories – The University Department has various laboratories.

Advanced Computing Centre - The centre is equipped with 64-bit muti-core Xeon processor based servers running in a virtualized cloud environment designed to provide maximum uptime as well as compute on demand facilities to the University community.

Guest Lectures – The University invites industry speakers and professionals to deliver guest lectures and share their views and experiences in the fields of media and communication, travel, sports and technology, petroleum, electronics and computer science.

Placement Cell - The cell provides placement assistance through its career services offices located at Ahmedabad, Delhi, Dehradun, Kolkata, Mumbai and Shillong. The university is mentored by UPES Dehradun which has a strong Career Services team. The placement team is actively involved in targeting the right kind of job profiles for students which would be in sync with their abilities and facilitate their long term career planning.
