About Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Patna

Indian Institute of Technology Patna is amongst the newest member of the famed IITs whose number has risen to 15 as of 2011. IIT Patna was established by an act of parliament on August 06, 2008.  IITs are institutions of national importance established through an Act of Parliament for fostering excellence in education. Admission to the Undergraduate Programmes at these institutions for all Indian and Foreign nationals is made through a Joint Entrance Examination, IIT-JEE (formerly known as JEE). The institute runs from its transit campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna as of 2011. As of 2011, it offers only undergraduate courses and doctorate courses.

The IITP Logo is composed of

  • Gear Wheel – It signifies Technology.
  • Atomic Orbitals – These symbolize education and research in science subjects at par with engineering subjects.
  • Shrivasta Symbol – It shows a connection with Buddhism that originated from Bihar.
  • The Book - It symbolizes the Institute as a Seat of Learning.
  • 0 – Displayed on the Blue Page of the book, the concept of numeric character “Zero” ( 0 ) was known by Aryabhatta (place-value system).
  • π – It is a Greek symbol which is used in Greek science and technology literature.
  • Saffron and Green Bands - They represent the colours of the Indian flag.
  • Blue Colour – It has been chosen for the text and symbols (book, sun, gear wheel and the atomic orbitals) because it is the colour of the Ashoka chakra/wheel in our national flag.
  • Sun – Positioned within the gear wheel, it symbolizes the spread of knowledge in all areas (Engineering, Science and Humanities, etc.).
  • Vidyaarthee Lavathey Vidyaam – It is a Sanskrit Sloka which means ‘One who aspires wisdom, attains it.

Location - The transit campus of IIT Patna is located on the campus of New Government Polytechnic in Patliputra Colony, Patna (bihar). The Institute is located near Polytechnic More. The institute is approximately 7 Kilometres away from the Patna Junction and 8 Kilometres from the Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan Airport Patna.

Transportation

  • Taxi is available at charges of Rs 300-350 from the airport and about Rs 150 from the Patna Junction Railway Station.
  • Auto rickshaw is the common transport in Patna.
  • Typical fare from the Patna Junction Railway Station to the Polytechnic More by auto rickshaw is Rs 70 to Rs 80.
  • Shared autos are also available in Rs 7-10 from the Patna Junction Railway Station to the Polytechnic More.

Advanced Classrooms - Each class room is well equipped with LCD, white screen, white board and audio-visual facilities.

Hostels – IIT Patna has 3 boy's hostels and 1 girls' hostel as of 2011. These are located very close to the academic complex. The students have access to Wi-Fi and LAN connectivity. The hostels are equipped with gymnasium and table tennis facilities. The Boys' hostel campus has a basketball court, a volleyball court, and badminton court. There are 2 students' mess and one canteen in the hostel-campus. There is a lush of greenery around the hostels. In addition to the adequate health care facilities, all the students are covered under Vidyarthi Mediclaim Insurance Policy.

Central Library – The library has acquired more than 6000 books and about 25 online e-resources including e-books and e-journals. It is equipped with modern technology of library automation system with Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and Self Check-In and Shelf Check-Out (Drop Box) system using RFID technology. There are 15 computers in the library for accessing different e-resources of the library.

Computer Centre – Indian Institute of Technology Patna has a computer centre with facilities of  Two 2 Mbps (1:1) Internet connection, One 4 Mbps (1:1) Internet connection and One 1 Gbps Internet connection. The whole institute has been wired and Internet facility has been provided to all members of the institute through LAN.

Research and Computer Laboratories - The Sponsored Research and Industrial Relations Unit (SRIRU) of the institute initiates and nurtures productive and interactive engagement with sponsoring agencies. The institute has a considerable number of major projects. Research is carried out in 2 Laboratories set up by the department of computer science & engineering. Computational Laboratory is meant for undergraduate and research students. It is equipped with 66 desktops. The LAN service connects all the desktops to the central network of IIT Patna. This lab also has a unit setup of seven Blade Servers with chassis, SAN Storage, Robotic Tape Library and a central KVM display unit. The hardware laboratory is primarily used for hardware logic design and microprocessor, microcontroller interfacing design experiments. The laboratory is equipped with Logic design trainer kits, 8086 Microprocessor board, 8051 Microcontroller, Interfacing devices, FPGA boards, Mixed Signal Oscilloscope (MSO).

Training and Placement - Several undergraduate students from IIT Patna have visited University of Houston at Houston and Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge where they worked on several research projects as part of their undergraduate training. The Training and Placement cell has made it possible for the undergraduate students to visit many nearby industrial units. To enhance its multidisciplinary focus, IIT Patna has MoU with UNICEF, Bihar that promotes several social initiatives in the areas of children education, health and social welfare. Interns from various parts of the country and the world visited IIT Patna for their internship. Students of IIT Patna also have opportunities to visit foreign universities like University of New South Wales-Australia, University of South Australia, Georgia State University-USA, University of Southern California-USA and in Indian Organizations like C-DAC, DRDO, Microsoft, TCS, HP, CMERI, Reliance Communication, LG, BOSCH, Hyundai Motors, Tata Motors, IOCL, ONGC, Bajaj Auto etc. for summer internship.

Recreational Facilities - Recreational Facilities come under the purview of Gymkhana. It promotes all extracurricular activities in the field of Sports. Facilities are available for Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics, Cricket, Chess, and Carom etc. In addition to this, Student Gymkhana has well equipped gymnasium.

Medical Facilities – A 24 hours primary medical facilities along with medical ambulance (fully equipped with all medical equipments such as Oxygen, Stretcher etc) are available in the institute campus. OPD are provided and a doctor is available for any medical needs of students and staff members of the IIT Patna. The Institute has also made suitable arrangements with Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital in Patna in the case of emergency hospitalization.

Security System –Securities are engaged for twenty four hours to both the institute campus and the student hostels.

Co-curricular Activities - IIT Patna students have successfully organized two annual functions and several cultural programs. The Institute organizes Cultural Fest in the month of October and Annual Fest in the month of April A spiritual programme at the institute premises is also organised in which Yoga Rishis are invited. Students also organize occasion based programmes. Music classes, literary club, environmental club, robotics club etc. are other such activities.

Achievements

  • IIT Patna’s Sponsored Research and Industrial Relations Unit houses many projects in all the academic units. These have been funded by many government and industrial research bodies
  • The institute has published 102 research papers in refereed journals and presented 70 papers in national and international conference.
  • Various IITP MOUs provide opportunities to B.Tech and Ph.D students and faculty to develop their research skills and interact with people working in different areas.
