About Indian Institute of Management - IIM Udaipur

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Udaipur is an autonomous institute of management education and research in India. In 2009, the Indian Government started 6 new IIMs which also included IIM Udaipur. Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur materialised in 2011, the Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur is the youngest and number 13 to have been set up in India. IIM, Udaipur belongs to the group of IIMs which were created by the Indian Government with the aim of identifying the brightest student talent available and creating a pool of elite managers to lead the various sectors of the Indian economy. It is recognized as a premiere management Institution. Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur (IIMU) has its temporary campus at Mohanial Sukhadia University. Its permanent campus is midst of construction on 300 acres of land in the Balicha area of Udaipur which has been allocated by the Government of Rajasthan. Udaipur, a capital of the former princely state of Mewar, is the gateway to many mid-sized companies, entrepreneurial ventures and dynamic NGOs that are making Rajasthan a hub of economic and social change. IIMU has established close ties with many of them for student internships, research projects, case studies and guest lectures.

Location of IIMU

Udaipur is located about 400 km southwest of the state capital, Jaipur, and 250 km northeast of Ahmedabad. The city lies on the Golden Quadrilateral (National Highway 8) midway between Delhi and Mumbai.

Transportation

  • By Air - Maharana Pratap Airport also known as Dabok Airport is around 20 km away from IIM Udaipur’s current campus. On landing, one can avail the prepaid taxi service for to reach campus. There are direct flights to Mumbai and Delhi daily. Other destinations can be accessed from Ahmedabad Airport which is around 250 km away.
  • By Rail - Rana Pratap Railway Station is located only 2.5 km away from campus and has direct trains to all major cities in India. The search code for Udaipur on IRCTC website is ‘UDZ’.
  • By Bus - Udaipur City Bus Stand also known as ‘Udiapole Bus Stand’ is located 5 km from campus. One can hire an auto rickshaw to reach campus. There is also a daily bus service from Udaipur to Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi. Within the city main mode of transport is auto rickshaws. They are available from MLSU gate on and one can also call for an auto rickshaw to the campus for personal use. Hired cars are also readily available.

Facilities at IIM, Udaipur

Hostels - IIMU has 3 hostels on the campus and are located within easy walking distance of the Academic Block. PGP students are provided with double occupancy in spacious 14 ft. by 11 ft. rooms equipped with cooling units in summer. PGPX students are provided with single occupancy. The hostels have various facilities like televisions, projectors, washing machines, four common rooms where students can relax, socialize or study. There is also a convenience store where basic necessities are available.

Classrooms – Though the campus is temporary, the 6 classrooms are newly-built, with air-conditioning. The classrooms are equipped with fixed projectors, high-end sound systems, video conferencing facilities with swivel cameras. These are acoustically engineered and are equipped with goose-neck mikes, lapel mikes and cordless mikes. Power sources are located at each desk.

Library – The library has an e-book collection of 70000+ apart from physical books and CDs/DVDs. It has subscribed to renowned journals, has access to databases of market data and has a collection of journals. It also has membership of NASSCOM, INFLIBNET, INDEST etc. The IIM Udaipur library OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) Intranet base web based service provides the users' access to all physical books of library and find out the location, availability and present status. All E-Resources like E-Journals, E-Books, and E-Databases can be accessed through desktops, laptops within the Institutional IPs range, few are login ID based. The library also facilitates Intra Library Loan facility, under it if any article which is not available then the library sends the request to all other IIMs or publishers and it is provided to the user.

International Exposure - PGP students have a choice of numerous options to study or work abroad for periods ranging from two weeks to three months during the course of their two year program. The international exposure increases their understanding of the impact of cultural values and local laws, and widens their personal and intellectual horizons.

Some of the programs are:

  • Student Exchange Program – IIMU has agreements with leading business schools in Germany and France for reciprocal student exchanges. Students spend a full semester on the exchange and scholarships are available to defray some of the costs. In France these institutes are EDHEC and EM Normandie. In Germany these institutes are HHL Leipzig School of Management, European Business School and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
  • International Business in Practice (IBP) – A second year elective course during which student teams undertake two-week consulting projects for clients in locations like Bangkok and Dubai
  • International Corporate Internship – A number of PGP students undertake their Corporate Internships abroad. Past locations have included Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, London and Malaysia
  • Global Business Project (GBP) – A four month action-based learning course with participation from various leading universities across the globe. The institute is the first B-school from India to partner with the prestigious Global Business Project consortium through which selected students get an opportunity to work with the very best management graduates from a set of 12 global universities namely UNC-Chapel Hill, Columbia, George Washington University, Lingnan College, Miami, Maryland, Purdue, Pittsburgh, San Diego State, University of Connecticut, and University of Wisconsin & UNISINOS. The project provides the students with an opportunity to work with top global companies who recruit MBAs as well as with fellow MBAs from different backgrounds, countries and culture.

PGPX – It is a unique one year MBA program. It is a dual degree program that is a full partnership between IIMU and the prestigious Krannert School of Management at Purdue University in the United States, one of the world leaders in the SCM domain. Unlike other one year programs which include a short international component, PGPX offers a full semester of five months at Purdue University where students have access to world-class faculty and facilities and the chance to learn and work with students from all parts of the world. Students graduate with an MS-GSCM degree from Purdue and a Post Graduate Diploma for Executives with a specialization in GSCM from IIM Udaipur.

Industry Interface - Duke University sends a cohort of public policy students every year for the Summer School for Future Leaders in Development. Other opportunities include international student exchange programs and overseas summer internships. These interactions are not limited to internships, live projects and case discussions, the students organize summits and panel discussions that bring together experts, thinkers and practitioners from India and abroad. Students also benefit from intensive mentoring by committed and enthusiastic industry professionals.

Scholarships – The institute provides various scholarships.

Some of these are:

  • Genpact Scholarships – These are given annually to two second year students. The preliminary list of students for consideration of the scholarships is made on the basis of general guidelines for scholarships, some of which have certain criteria’s like – a) The students should have been in the top 20 percent of the first year class. b) The student’s CGPA is 3 and above in the first year. The final selection is made by a Committee consisted of a representative from GENPACT and IIMU. The scholarship is of Rs. 1, 00,000 each.
  • GRM Tech Scholarship – This scholarship is given to two second year students. The preliminary list of students for consideration of the scholarships is made on the basis of general guidelines for scholarships, some of which have certain criteria’s like a) The students should have been in the top 20 percent of the first year class b) The student’s CGPA is 3 and above in the first year. The final selection will be made by the Award Committee of IIMU. The scholarship is of Rs. 1, 00,000.

Financial Assistance - IIMU extends Financial Aid to students in need of financial assistance. The objective of the Financial Aid Policy at IIMU is to ensure that no student is deprived of education at the institute for financial reasons. All students whose annual household income is below Rs. 4, 50,000 are eligible to apply. Other students with severe financial difficulties can also apply.

IT Resources – IIMU provides internet connection of 1Gbps with a back-up of 100 Mbps. The whole campus has access to Wi-Fi on a 24x7 basis and the campus has both fixed line and wireless LAN. Local printing facilities are available in all student residences.

Bloomberg Financial Markets Laboratory - The financial markets laboratory at IIMU features 12 fully equipped terminals with subscriptions to Bloomberg's suite of financial market information and analysis tools. The laboratory is open 24x7 and also provides a remote user facility to allow students to access the terminals from their residences.

Mess – The University has 2 two mess halls in the campus adjacent to the hostels’. The menu includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisines. For those studying late, a night canteen is open until 4 a.m.

Sports and Recreation – There are facilities for sports football, cricket, badminton, volleyball, carom, table tennis and basketball amongst others. A gym is open 24x7 in the hostels and there is also a gym in the Academic Block. There is also a meditation room in one of the hostels’. Udaipur and the surrounding mountains in the Aravalli Range offer enthusiasts wildlife and nature trails, motorcycle excursions, bird-watching, camping and trekking.

Entrepreneurship - IIMU provides students with the freedom and institutional support they need to explore their entrepreneurial ambitions. This is facilitated through in-depth orientation to entrepreneurship, an inspiring range of elective courses, intensive mentoring during the program and beyond. The institute also has flexible placement options for students choosing to pursue an entrepreneurial venture and provided assistance in procuring seed funding and equity capital.

Clubs – There are many clubs which serve as a platform for bringing out the best in a student. Every club have their own individual objectives in a certain areas of expertise. Thus there are cells which deal in Finance, Economics, Consulting, Marketing and Entrepreneurship. For organising celebrations for all the festivals and events there is Cultural Committee and CodeRed. Certain clubs promote spirit of social responsibility amongst the students through initiatives like Campus Connect, Navonnesh, Newspaper Collection Drive, annual Blood Donation Drive amongst others.

Guest Lectures - Corporate leaders visit the IIMU campus throughout the year to give guest lectures covering varied topics on industry practices and major business developments. These guest lectures serve as a valuable means of interaction between students and practitioners and are helpful in building a beneficial long lasting relationship with the corporate sector.
