About South Asian University - SAU

South Asian University (SAU) is an International University. It is sponsored by the eight Member States of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The following are eight South East Asian countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The University started functioning from 2010, at a temporary campus at Akbar Bhawan, India. Its permanent campus is planned to be set up at Maidan Garhi in South Delhi, India, next to Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Indian Prime Minister proposed the establishment of a South Asian University at the 12th SAARC Summit-Dhaka, in November 2005 with the aim of providing world-class facilities and professional faculty to students and researchers from SAARC member countries.

South Asian University (SAU) Facilities

Hostel Facilities - The University provides hostel accommodation only to outside Delhi students. These facilities are not provided for spouse / children or other family members of the admitted students.

Medical Facilities - There is a Medical Group Insurance Scheme in the University and all students are admitted under it. The University has its own Health Centre where limited OPD facilities are provided to all students.

Scholarship Facilities - There are financial aids for the students in the University. The following scholarships are mentioned below:

  • President's Scholarship (For M.A. / M.Sc. and LL.M. students only)
  • SAARC India Silver Jubilee Scholarships for Masters and Doctoral Programs
  • Financial Aid from SAU for Masters and Doctoral Programs

 Student VISA Facilities - India Government has started a special category Visa called "SAU VISA". It is issued to the overseas selected students who will be coming to India to pursue studies at South Asian University. Students belonging to Bhutan and Nepal will not need VISA.
