About Hidayatullah National Law University - HNLU Raipur

HNLU is a Residential University and is sixth in the series of National Law Schools in India. The State of Chattisgarh has opened the doors of opportunities to the aspiring young generation of Law Students on similar lines as National Law Schools in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Kolkata and Jodhpur. HNLU is endeavouring to emerge as a University of great repute. Dharma Sansthapanartham” (for the sake of establishing the primacy of the laws of eternal value) is the motto of Hidayatullah National Law University. HNLU is named after Justice Mohammad Hidayatullah, the greatest stalwarts of the legal profession in India

It has been established by the Government of Chattisgarh under the Hidayatullah National University of Law, Chattisgarh, Act (Act No.10 of 2003). HNLU has been included in the list of the Universities maintained by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and has been declared fit to receive Central assistance in terms of the rules framed under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956.

HNLU is presently functioning from a heritage building adjacent to Rajbhavan. The Government of Chhattisgarh has been kind enough to allot the required land and necessary financial assistance for the construction of the new campus. His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the President of India laid the Foundation Stone of the permanent building of this University on 28.01.2004

One of the features of HNLU is its Six Schools as Centres of Excellence in the respective fields and Six Units/Centres under each School with total of thirty six units.

Moot Court - Moot Court Hall at HNLU is the Laboratory to test the Advocacy skills of the students of HNLU. A fully furnished Moot Court Hall is available in the Campus and all the Court Room Exercises are conducted in the Moot Court Hall. HNLU is one of the very few Universities in India to include Moot Court Exercise as a compulsory part of every legal subject taught at HNLU. Fifteen Marks are allotted for the Moot Court Exercise in every Law subject of which a maximum of 10 marks are awarded to a student based on his advocacy skills, court manners, knowledge of law, etc., and a maximum of 5 marks are awarded to the memorials containing written arguments for the case which the student argues in the Moot Court.

The Moot Court Society, a student body manages all the mooting activities at HNLU. The Moot Court Society conducts an intra mural Moot Court Competition and selects Mooters to represent HNLU at various Moot Court and Client Counseling Competitions held at various places in India and abroad. Since inception, the students of HNLU continue to bring laurels like Best Student Advocate, Best Memorials, etc. from various Moot Court and Client Counseling competitions from different corners of India, pushing behind many premier law schools of India. The Under- graduate Course in HNLU is designed in such a manner that a student of HNLU can pass out only after successfully arguing a minimum of forty five cases in all.

Computer Lab - Though most of the students at HNLU possess their own laptop computers, HNLU has a fully air conditioned Computer Lab with sufficiently large number of Desktop Computers with Internet connectivity. Since Project presentation is part of every subject taught at HNLU, students find the Computer Lab very useful for preparing their project reports and Memorials for Moot Court Exercises. All the legal databases are made available to the students of HNLU through CD-ROMs and subscription to Web based databases like Manupatra and Westlaw International. Wi-fi facility provides the students a wire free access to the web resources through their laptops. The Information Technology Committee, a student body, maintains the Computer Lab. The IT Committee helps students to procure their own laptop computers for the students at highly competitive prices. The lifestyle at HNLU requires every student to spend a considerable time at the Computer Lab.

Library - The Law Library is an integral division of the HNLU. The library of the HNLU is considered as a laboratory of a scientific institute, where the apparatus for the law students are the classic law books, case law reports and journals that are available in full sets. The students would perform legal research like experiments to augment their studies by using these equipments. There are quite a few P IV workstations placed in the library hall for the students to browse legal resources from West Law, Manupatra and other on-line sources, apart from Grand Jurix which is available for search off line.

Apart from sizeable number of text books and the reference books we have in our collection full sets of All ER, Cambridge Law Journal, Modern Law Review, Law Quarterly Review, The Digest, Halsbury’s Laws of England (latest 4 th ed Reissue), Butterworth’s Company Cases, AIR Manual 5 th ed and the latest 6 th ed., Civil Court Manual, AIR, SCC, Income Tax Reports, Company Cases, Current Central Legislation, Divorce and Matrimonial Cases, Indian Appeals, Moor’s Indian Appeals, Labour and Industrial Cases, Madras Law Journal, Supreme Court Digests – Millennium, 15 Years, Quinquennial, Decennial and Yearly, Halsbury’s Laws of India, MP Revenue Cases, CG Revenue Cases, MP Labour and Service Law Reports Labour Law Journal several law dictionaries, general dictionaries, and Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Sports - HNLU believes in the philosophies “healthy mind in a healthy body” “Health is Wealth” and “All work and no play makes jack a dull boy”. Even in the present campus, HNLU provides indoor badminton courts and volleyball courts. Adequate facilities are available for sporting activities and the Sports Committee, a student body, takes care of the sporting requirements of the students of HNLU. Inter and Intra Semester matches are conducted to bring out the talents from amongst the students. Badminton, Volley Ball, Cricket and Football are the most preferred games of the students of HNLU. The New Campus will have excellent world-class sporting facilities for the students.

Health Care Facilities - The University has signed a MOU with the Apollo Hospital to provide health care facilities to the students. Students are entitled to free consultation at the Apollo Hospital, Raipur and are also entitled to get discount on the cost of drugs and diagnostic services.

Mess & Canteen - HNLU has a Mess and a Canteen. Since HNLU is a residential University all the food requirements of students are well taken care of by the University. The Mess Committee, a Student Body, manages the HNLU Mess. The Mess Committee in consultation with the students of HNLU fixes menu and it ensures quality and homely food.

A Canteen is also available on the Campus. Light Snacks, tea, coffee, soup, cool drinks, milk, toffees, stationeries and other general items like soaps, cosmetics, are available in the Canteen. Photocopying facility and computer print outs are also available at very reasonable prices.
