About Indian Institute of Foreign Trade - IIFT Kolkata

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Kolkatta (IIFT-Kolkatta) is a Government Deemed University which specialises in International Business education, training and research. IIFT Kolkatta is the first-ever campus outside Delhi. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Kolkatta Campus has been started in July, 2006. The Government of West Bengal has allotted land of 7 acres with a provision for a further three acres in 2006 regarding the same. It is proposed to offer courses more specific to the region which can help the industry to get the right manpower to address the current demands of the environment.

MBA in International Business is the flagship programme of IIFT catering to the Pan-India requirements. For the working executives, the Part-Time programme for three years and diploma programme for eighteen months in International Business are available. The campus offers Post Graduate Diploma in International Financial Operations and also a Certificate Programme in Export and Import Procedures and Documentation. These courses help the working executives and the budding entrepreneurs from this region in acquiring the requisite skills to place them on the global industrial map.

Facilities at IIFT Kolkatta

Hostels – The University provides separate hostel facilities for girls and boys. It provides all the basic amenities like mess, common room, television facility, table tennis etc.

Foreign Trade Library – It is a knowledge bank in the field of Management, Foreign Trade and WTO related issues. It has an organized collection of information resources on the International Business & Economic Environment which are accessible in printed or e-form to its Readers for their reference or borrowing. It has a collection of specialized publications, reports, Databases, e-Journals, Print Journals, Articles etc. This Library has a collection of 1, 00,990 resources that comprises74,008 book/CDs-volumes, 17381 bound periodicals, and 447 periodicals and 4000 articles.

Internet – The whole university has Wired and WiFi internet facilities powered by 50 Mbps Internet Connectivity.

Computer Laboratory - It is well equipped with computers for students’ access. Wi-Fi services are also made available to the students in the Campus. IT services available at IIFT Delhi are being extended to IIFT Kolkata over NLD lines. There are two NLD connections from two different ISPs in order to provide uninterrupted access to the resources available at IIFT Delhi.

WTO Cell - The IIFT campus at Kolkata houses a WTO cell to cater to the policy requirement for international business. This helps to enhance the capacities of bureaucrats and industries alike on policy and advocacy issues involving international business like WTO, FTA, and PTAs etc. This cell also caters to the specific policy research areas of both the state and central governments.

Training – The University not only trains senior members of IAS, IPS and other Central Government Services but also the executives of PSUs including MMTC, STC, etc. besides highly technical members of Indian Air Force.

Guest House - The Institute hosts visitors at Kolkata in this guest house.  It has AC and Non-AC double bedded rooms with catering service.

Industry Interactions - Students of IIFT interact with the industry on a regular basis through various guest lectures, interactive discussions, case study competitions, live projects and a lot of other interactive methods. This is done to give students the perspective of various industry professionals. IIFT hosts Trade Winds, the annual business summit and Headstart, a thought leadership guest lecture series through which guest speakers are invited to interact with the student fraternity.

Hindi Cell – It has been established to promote the use of Hindi and it has been making efforts for the progressive use of Hindi for the official purposes of the Union.

Student’s Clubs – The University has various student clubs.

These are:

  • BLASH – It stands for Buy Low and Sell High and is the Trade club at IIFT. It organises trading activities and keeps the students updated with current trends and basics of the world of international trade. It organises IIFT Kolkata’s flagship event, National Trade Symposium. The Symposium involves IIFT hosting a group of renowned speakers from academic and industry spheres who express their views on a theme of contemporary importance in the fields of economics and trade, benefitting the students with their esteemed opinions. Other activities undertaken by the club are Model WTO - a one of its kind WTO simulation event, guest lectures, quizzes, presentations, live projects and competitions, all involved with enhancing the knowledge base of the batch in relation to trade.
  • Bandwagon – It is a forum for students who are interested in marketing. It organises various activities which help in enriching and expand upon the classroom experiences and challenges the students will face in the real world of marketing.
  • Spirit - Spirit is the official Entrepreneurship cell (E-Cell) of IIFT. It encourages budding entrepreneurs to develop and nurture their innovations and simulate real-world challenges.
  • Casanova – It is a platform for fine-tuning skills of the students pertaining to areas of corporate finance, investments, valuations, and banking and financial markets. Cashonova arranges knowledge sharing sessions and intellectual discussions on these pertinent issues. Students also share their presentations to the class on their topics of interest and expertise. Quizzes and Competitions are held regularly to encourage the members to learn new concepts and also to make them competent to perform in inter-B school management fests.
  • Socrates – It is a platform for students who are passionate about making a career in consulting. It organises guest lectures by experts and alumni having work experience in the consulting profiles, apart from quizzes and competitions
  • Koshish – It is the social awareness club of IIFT to sensitize the students to the needs and problems of society and social and economic development. It organises social awareness programmes on various social issues.
  • Systemix - It is the Business Technology Club at IIFT. It aims to provide participants with an exposure to the emerging trends in technology and provides a platform to the students to make a career in Information Technology. The club organises guest lectures and corporate interactions so that the students have an experience and an understanding of the business environment.
