About Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya

Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalay (IKSVV), khairagarh, state - chhattisgarh, was established in 1956. IKSVV is an active member of the association of indian universities (AIU). Any student or scholar from any part of the world can come and stay in the university campus for study or research. Students & scholars of music, musicians, musicologists, art critics and music promoters make their presence in the campus to acquit the latest and the best in indian classical music, indian classical dance, visual arts and literature. Raja Birendra Bahadur Singh and Rani Padmavati Devi- the  then rulers of khairagarh princely estate were the inspiration behind the inception of this unique university which is named after their beloved daughter, princess Indira. The  main building of the university is housed in the donated  palace. Late priya darshani Indira Gandhi, who later became the prime minister of india inaugurated the university on October 14, 1956.  This is the oldest university of Chhattisgarh and it celebrated it's golden jubilee on 14th october 2006.

The jurisdiction of the university covers the entire country.  IKSVV Khairagarh is one of the very few institutions of our country that affiliates colleges and centres across the country. The university is empowered to affiliate any institution situated outside the state, imparting instructions exclusively for music and fine arts provided the same is not affiliated to any other university.  At present, the university affiliates  43 colleges all over the country. Apart from affiliating these colleges, university runs 24 recognized centres throughout India. Thus, the  annual exams are conducted at 67 places at a time.

Direct trains for vishakhapatnam, mumbai, pune, ahmedabad, howrah, bhubaneswar, chennai, trivandrum, amritsar and new delhi are available from these railway stations, situated on the main train route-Howrah-Mumbai via Nagpur (i.e., south-east-central railway of india).

Facilities

University library - It is a unique library in the country devoted primarily to the study and research on indian classical music and visual arts. The library has 44047 books at present and about 2161 back volumes of the important research journals. It has subscribed for 41 journals. It also has 97 transcript of manuscripts of important works in indian classical music and dance. The library has 183 research thesis & 170 dissertations, those are mainly research work in the fields of music, dance, visual and folk arts.

Computer centre -  The centre caters the needs of students, faculty members and employees. It maintains & handles 2 Mbps leased link under UGC-Infonet scheme.  It provides and manages internet connectivity to the departments / administrative sections through campus-wide-networking. It has a large number of personal computers, large multi-colour printers and scanners including other necessary peripherals. The centre organizes and conducts computer awareness / literacy programmes for students and staff. It also designs and develops software for computerizing all the virtual needs of the university.  It works as a nodal centre of the university and coordinates networking with computer centre of other Universities for exchange of expertise and software development. 41-Affiliated Colleges and 32-recognized examination centres can approach the centre just with a click on their computers.

Audio-visual section (listening room) - University is the Mecca of Indian Music. The oldest classical recitals are kept in the audio-visual section (i.e., listening room) with utmost care. It provides regular listening facility to the students and researchers. It has a number of audio cassettes, audio CD's related to indian classical music both hindustani karnatic, light-music, bhajans and ghazals etc. It also has a rare and good collection of gramophone records, audio cassettes, video cassettes, spool tapes, audio CDs, slides on visual arts and CD ROM's.

UGC-Infonet scheme - On the recommendation of the joint technical & tariff committee, the University Grants Commission, New Delhi provided financial assistance to the university for 2 Mbps leased link under UGC Infonet scheme.  The INFLIBNET centre, ahmedabad, an inter-university centre of UGC is coordinating and monitoring the project on behalf of the UGC and ERNET, New Delhi. It has been launched to bridge the gap between urban and rural universities. I.K.S.V., khairagarh is situated in a tribal area and has much to offer to the outside world. This facility enables students and staff to access the best institutions in their field.

Health centre - The university has separate health centre which is available for University students and staff. Consultancy hours are from - 9:00 am to10:00 am in morning and 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the evening.

Guest house - The university has well equipped guest house for stay.  This facility is available on prior permission of Registrar/VC. The guests are allowed maximum three days for stay.

Inter disciplinary research - The university is well known for inter disciplinary researches in performing & visual arts, including literatures- hindi, sanskrit & english.  There is a good number of research scholars who are working on various topics relating to painting & literature, dance & literature, literature & folk arts etc. I.K.S.V.V. is the only university of music, dance & visual arts that has country wide affiliation. Any scholar from any part of country can get registered under any guide on any research topic subject to the approval of the academic council of the university.

Museum - The university museum has a number of archaeological art pieces depicting vividly rich culture of this part of country. The museum is fully documented and draws the attention of those interested in arts and culture of the state. A mini classical & folk musical-instrument gallery depicts the history of musical instruments.

Stage performances - These are an integral part of the musical learning. The musical training cannot be completed unless a learner becomes a good performer with this view, ‘Shruti Mandal’, a musical evening is organised once in a week.

Other Facilities

  • Instructions can be imparted in english medium also to the non-hindi and N.R.I. / foreign students.
  • Foreign students from non-english speaking countries may join special coaching in english language.
  • Students may avail special railway concession for study tours as per the rules of indian railways.
  • Students belonging to SC/ST category and children of university employees are exempted from tuition fees.
  • Women students of chhattisgarh state are exempted from tuition fees at graduate and post graduate level.
  • Visually impaired students of chhattisgarh state are exempted from tuition fees, examination fees and hostel room rents.
  • Differently able students (other than visually impaired) of chhattisgarh are exempted from examination fees.
  • Visually impaired students are given extra time in written examinations as per the university rules.
  • Students are given enough chances to improve their art form and personality through participation in various programmes.
