About Institute of Armament Technology - AIT

Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune or DIAT is a Deemed University and an Autonomous Organization under the egis of Department of Defence Research and Development, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. DIAT came into existence on 1st May, 1952 as Institute of Armament Studies at the sprawling campus of the College of Military Engineering, Dapodi, Pune. In the year 1967, the Institute was renamed as the Institute of Armament Technology and was shifted to its present location at Girinagar, Pune. Since then the Institute is under the aegis of Department of Defence Research and Development, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. On the basis of accreditation by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Pune University recognised eight courses for the award of ME degree in 1980.  It was recognized as Deemed University on 1st April, 2006. In the same year, DIAT opened its gates for the general public, and since then has been admitting students in open category with scholarships to join its Ph. D / M. Tech programmes. Apart from the conventional courses, the Institute also conducts 1-1.5 year’s duration, specific, limited courses and a variety of specialised short term courses. The Institute has also acquired ISO 9001: 2000 certification from DNV Norway. It is located amidst the green beautiful Sahyadri Hills, overlooking the picturesque Khadakwasla Lake.

Transportation

  • DIAT can be reached by Pune Municipal Transport Corporation Buses, Route No. 49 from Pune Railway Station; Route Nos. 50, 51 and 52 from Shaniwar Wada via Swargate

Facilities

POINTS - Post Induction Training School (POINTS) Programme is a unique initiative of DRDO for imparting Integrated Training to the newly inducted scientists in the beginning of their scientific and professional career. This training programme is meant to develop amongst the students, a deep sense of scientific temper, innovativeness and tenacity to achieve the set objectives in the most trying situations through constant enhancement of their scientific capabilities and technological skills.

POINTS Features

  • The scientists coming from diverse Engineering and Science backgrounds are divided into 7 technology streams, namely, Aeronautics, Armament Engineering, Combat Engineering and Vehicles, Electronics and Computer Science, Materials and Metallurgy, Missiles and Naval Sciences. They undergo 8 weeks of General Organisational Orientation Training (GOOT) followed by 8 weeks of General and Advanced Technology Training (GATT)
  • The scientists are attached to various field units of Indian Armed Forces for 2 weeks and another 2 weeks would is spent for acquainting them with service, administrative matters and evaluation etc.
  • To facilitate the participants to work in heterogeneous groups, group tasks such as KEOTA (Know Each Other and Think Alike) is conducted. Training on innovation, problem solving skills, soft skills, presentation and communication skills, Material Design and Manufacturing Engineering, Research Methodology is also imparted to all the scientists
  • The participants in groups are also involved in a research project and they submit the reports during the training programme
  • Other than the academics, sports, adventure, cultural events, yoga and stress management techniques are also the integral parts of the training
  • Many outstanding faculty members from important Institutions viz. IITs, IISc, NITs and other Institutes of National importance along with the scientist faculty from various DRDO labs/establishments and Armed Forces deliver the lectures during this POINTS – 16 programme. The curriculum of the training programme is developed and continually updated as per the needs of DRDO

POINTS Hostel - POINTS Hostel has three blocks (A,B,C), and having 200 well designed, independent rooms in all. Each room can accommodate two students comfortably. The Hostel is having comfortable, well-maintained dining facility, well-augmented Gym and recreational facilities. The Hostel is provided with net connectivity and round the clock security arrangements.

Ladies Hostel - The institute provides fully furnished hostel for single girls. There are about 50 rooms in which maximum two girls reside in each room. Every room contains attached toilet for convenient stay. The facility of water cooler is also available at one of the floor of the hostel.

Campus wide Network - Internet is provided to all the Students, Faculty members, Officers and Scientists staying in DIAT (DU) campus. The network also enables access to online library database and e-journals-local mail and web server.

Wi-Fi Network - Full wireless coverage is provided at DIAT (DU) campus, it covers   academic buildings, technical area, POINTS Hostel and Guest House area.

NKN Facility - The NKN comprises of an ultra-high speed CORE (multiples of 10 Gbps), complimented with a distribution layer at appropriate speeds. The network is designed to support Overlay Networks, Dedicated Networks, and Virtual Networks. Advanced applications in areas such as Health, Education, Science and Technology, Grid Computing, Bio informatics, Agriculture, and Governance are an integral part of NKN. The entire network seamlessly integrates with the global scientific community at multiple gigabits per second speed. The purpose of such a knowledge network goes to the very core of the country's quest to build quality institutions with requisite research facilities and create a pool of highly trained persons. DIAT has 100 Mbps Leased Line for the Purpose of NKN.

DRONA Network - DRDO has provided its own network known as DRONA, which connected through all of the labs in the country. This facility is limited for DRDO Scientists/Officers studying or working in the campus.

Video Conference and Virtual Class Room – These are used to conduct interactive online lectures and meetings. It supports HD quality video streaming and video recording facility as well. It works on dedicated DRONA network which is used by DRDO laboratories only.

Web Server - DIAT has its own website with dns diat.ac.in run by data centre. Web Site displaying information about DIAT campus, departments, faculty members, facilities and It links to some of the other useful applications like DIAT mail login, library server, recruitment, MMG dept, RO, COE, Admission process etc.

Mail Server - DIAT has provided its own mail service for students, faculty members and staff members. Mail service is available on Intranet and Internet simultaneously.

Scholarship for M. Tech. Students

  • All Scholarship category students are eligible for scholarship under DBT scheme of AICTE during the M. Tech. Course (Rs. 12,400/- per month as of 2015).
  • All Students, who are admitted to Ph.D Program as full-time non-sponsored students (i.e. Scholarship Students), will be eligible for Scholarship, as per MHRD norms in force, from time to time.

Guest House – It is located in the campus nearer to Kadakwasla lake and it is surrounded with greeneries. There are two VIP rooms and eight general rooms. The guest house facility is available as per the DRDO guest house rules and regulations.

Placement Cell – It provides all audio visual facilities for PowerPoint Presentations, written test, group discussion and interviews. It plays a very important and key role in counselling and guiding the students of the University for their successful career.
