About Junagadh Agricultural University

Junagadh Agricultural University is one of the 4 different Agricultural Universities in the State of Gujrat. Junagadh Agricultural came in to existence from 1st May, 2004. It's foundation lies in the establishment of Gujarat Agricultural University which was established in February 1972 with the State-wide mandate for the triple function of Agricultural Education, Research and Extension Education. For strengthening of these activities at regional level, the Gujarat Agricultural University is separated in to four different Agricultural Universities in the State by Gujarat Agricultural University Act-2004. Junagadh Agricultural University is one of them. University's jurisdiction is spread over the districts of Junagadh, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Surendranagar, Bhavnagar and Amreli of the Gujarat state. There are 7 multidisciplinary Main Research Stations, 5 Main Research Stations for various crops and 11 sub Research Stations/Testing Centres in the University for the development of new varieties/hybrids of crops, vegetables and fruits. These centres also works for the development of economical and sustainable production technology packages for newly developed varieties/hybrids with its modification every year. The extension component includes five Krushi Vigyan Kendras (Jamnagar, Amreli, Targhadia, Khapat and Nana Kandhasar), one Sardar Smruti Kendra (Junagadh), Centre of Excellence of Training in Groundnut, Centre of Excellence on Soil-Water Management and a T & V scheme. For transfer of agriculture and allied technologies, Khedut Shibir, Group Discussion, Farmers Service, Agro-meteorological Advisory Services, Crop Demonstrations, Educational Tours, Seminars, Cattle Camps, Film Shows are also arranged under extension education programmes.

Facilities

Hostel Facility - The Junagadh Agricultural University runs 14 Hostels (3 Girls & 11 Boys Hostel) with a large number of rooms. All the undergraduate and postgraduate students are provided Hostel facilities with an attached mess.

Library - A central library near to the Hostel area is utilised by students for reference, reading and net surfing. The University has a rich library with double storeyed stack room with capacity of 1.5-lakh books. The Library provides 150 Indian & around 42 Foreign journals and 14,000 back volumes. The library provides services to five constituent Colleges, which come under Junagadh Agricultural University, viz., College of Agriculture, Junagadh, College of Agriculture Engineering & Technology, Junagadh, College of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, Junagadh, Post Graduate Institute of Agri. Business Management, Junagadh, College of Fisheries, Veraval. Cyberary with 100 mbps LAN connectivity facilitates students with databases like CAB, AGRIS, AGRICOLA are obtained as CD-ROM version whereas, INDIAN HARVEST as online databases. University Library has adopted open access system with card catalogues (Author, subject and Title) and Dewey decimal classification scheme. Theses are also available in soft copies for the access of the users. University Library is kept open from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on all working days while the Cyberary section of the library remains open from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on all working days. Outsiders are permitted to consult the Library.

Directorate of Extension Education - The Directorate has launched a novel programme "Krushi Vignaniko Kheduto Na Dware". This programme has gained popularity in entire Saurashtra region as the scientists of the University are entrusted with the task of co-ordination of research dissemination in different districts. The University has also organized several need based programmes to increase awareness in farmers about new technologies in collaboration with Government / Co-operative sector and NGOs. The Directorate utilises the services of various mass media like Radio, Television, News Papers, Magazines as well as Exhibitions, Farmer Fairs to achieve their objective.

KVK's - Krishi Vikas Kendras are Agriculture Research  which are involved in training farmers with new technology and techniques.

SSK - Sardar Smruti Kendra is a tribute to late Vallabhabhai Patel. It is involved in empowering the rural communities, particularly the under privileged farmers and farm women to have control over their own livelihood and manage their occupation to create better economic condition. Sardar Smruti Kendra carries out its activities through the Information Wing, Training Wing and Exhibition Wing. It organise various training programmed for various categories of farmers who are connected with agriculture. The Kendra provides lodging and boarding facilities to the trainees, it has a well equipped farmer Hostel / ETC Hostel. 30 trainees can be accommodated comfortably in this Hostel.

Directorate of Research - The Directorate monitors research activities of the research projects sponsored by ICAR, Government of India, Government of Gujarat and other agencies & NGOs. It is involved in various Research issues related to different crops and disciplines including Wheat, millet, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, fruit crops, vegetables, dry farming, grassland, agricultural engineering, cattle breeding and fisheries.

Research Stations - There are about 41 Research Stations located in four agro-climatic zones falling under the jurisdiction of Junagadh Agricultural University. These conduct research activities centred on the development of need based, location specific, eco friendly and cost effective agro-technologies aimed at the improvement of socio-economic conditions of farming community.

Scholarships

The following Scholarships are awarded to the students:

1.  NTS - National Talent Scholarship is awarded to students of other states nominated by ICAR on the basis of merit and written test @ Rs.12000/- per student per annum.

2.  MCM - Merit Cum Means Scholarship is awarded by ICAR to five meritorious students in each faculty. The amount of this scholarship is Rs.2040 per annum.

3.  JAU UG Scholarship - It is awarded by Junagadh Agricultural University to 5 girl students in each faculty @ Rs.6000/- per student per annum. If girl candidates are not available, it is awarded to economically backward students on the basis of merit.

4.  JAU P.G. Scholarship - It is awarded by Junagadh Agricultural University to the basis of merit to four students for Master degree @ Rs. 12000/- and two students for Ph.D @ Rs. 18000/-.

5.  Merit & Poor Merit Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to economically backward students by the Department of Social Welfare of the state @ Rs. 720/- student.

6.  Post Metric Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to economically backward students (SC/ST) by the ICAR (HRD), Pusa, New-Delhi @ Rs 4350/annum/student.   

7.  Sports - The Sports Complex exists near the Hostels and interested students utilize the facilities according to their choice games. Various Sports tournaments ate organised form time to time.

Cultural Activities - Cultural activities have become the intrinsic part of the regular activities performed by the students. It gives a chance to students to hone their talents, in various forms of arts. To give them encouragement their performances are organised during the annual day. Some of these activities include Drama, Folk Dance, Fancy Dress, Group Song, Mono Acting etc.

Placement Cell - Junagadh Agricultural University has an excellent placement record with top-notch organizations in Agro- industries with a strong and supportive alumni network holding prime position in reputed companies. The Placement Cell is constantly in touch with the industry.

Achievements

  • Out of 21 varieties nearly 12 varieties got recognition at National Level. The crops covered include Pearl millets, cereals, pulses, oil seeds, commercial crops, plantation crops and fodder, to reflect the attempts to meet the diverse needs of the people of Gujarat.
  • The first hybrid bajra and hybrid castor were developed by scientists of this University.
