About Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology - SVNIT Surat

The Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) is a national level Institute established jointly by State Government & Central Government in 1961 with an objective to provide excellence in technical education. It is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India recognized by the Government of India as an Institute of National Importance. It was formerly known as Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVRCET). In 2003, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC / AICTE and was renamed Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology. On 5th June 2007, the Parliament of India passed the National Institutes of Technology Act declaring it an Institute of National Importance which came in effect on Independence Day 2007. The Institute is under the fully financial and administrative control of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, New Delhi. With newly acquired status, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology Surat, became one of the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges that were established as joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. Surat SVNIT provides Bachelor's Degree Programmes in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering disciplines. The total intake of students is, currently 426 (subject to change). 50% of the seats are filled up from the Gujarat State (subject to change) and the 50% of the seats are reserved for the students from other States (subject to change) with quota fixed for every State. The students in UG programmes are being admitted through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and students in PG programmes are being admitted through Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering (GATE). All the UG programmes and PG programmes have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Some seats are reserved for the SAARC and other countries under the DASA scheme. The college has well-established Central Learning resource centres like Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Continuing Education Centre and Physical Education Section. Sardar Vallabhbhai Institute of Technology has 3 Post Graduate Centres, one each in Civil Engineering, Applied Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering Departments. The Institute is offering 7 Under Graduate Programmes, Fifteen Post Graduate Programmes. It also offers five years integrated M.Sc. programme in Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry and Applied Mathematics. The college has a campus of its own, spread over 100 hectares of land on the Surat-Dumas Highway.

Location – SVNIT is located in the outskirts of Surat city in an area known as Ichchhanath, at a distance of about 10 kms. from the Surat Railway Station. It is on the way to a small sea-side resort known as DUMAS, from railway station.

Transport

Surat is one of the main nodes on the Bombay-Delhi (National Highway 8) and is connected to the rest of the country by rail. Surat is at a distance of about 260 kms. North of Mumbai.

The Gujarat State Transportation Corporation's city buses regularly ply from early morning till midnight, between Surat Railway Station and College Campus/Piplod. Any bus heading for Ichchanath or Piplod, can be taken to reach the NIT, Surat campus.

Auto rickshaws (more commonly) or taxis can also be hired.

Facilities

Hostels – SVNIT has 11 Hostels, 9 for boys and 2 for girls, named after personalities of India. Each hostel has its own mess, TV room, and computer facility. The construction of 3 new mega hostels to accommodate additional 3200 students is under progress.

Central Library - It has a collection of about 86,000 books, 250 Journals, 16,000 Indian standards and non-book materials etc. It also has a rich collection of resources in electronic media available locally on the Institute Intranet and accessible on the Web.

Central Computer Centre - Central Computer Centre is one of the central learning resources enabled with facility of internet.

Anchor Institute (Engineering & Auto) – It is promoted by Industries Commissionerate, Government of Gujarat in partnership with SVNIT. It provides training and skill development programmes to candidates for the required readily employable manpower. DASA - Direct Admission of Students Abroad scheme offers admissions for Foreign Nationals / Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) / Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), IIITs and other premier Technical Institutions. Scholarship to SC/ST - The SC and ST category students are sanctioned scholarships from the Department of Social Welfare of their respective states. ‘The Central Sector Scholarship Scheme of Top Class Education for SC/ST Students’ by the Ministry of Social Justice and empowerment, Government of India is also available. In addition to that Indian Oil Scholarship for SC students is also extended.

Bank - The institute has 1 bank and 2 ATM rooms situated in the campus, State Bank of India and ATM of Canara Bank. State Bank of India is regular branch in the campus and is housed in front of the main gate of SVNIT.

Canteen - The campus has one canteen located behind the Central Library building. It’s used by hostelites as well as the occasional visitor. The Canteen is open from 7.00 A.M. to 7.00 P.M. on all working days including Saturdays.

Dispensary - There is a dispensary in SVNIT campus for both students and staff of SVNIT. The dispensary remains open on all working days from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 6 pm.

Post Office - The campus has a post office in front of main gate of SVNIT. The Post office provides all needed facilities like - general post, register posts, speed posts, postal savings schemes and many more.

Sports – The Institute provides facilities for - football, basketball, volleyball, cricket and other sports.

Placement Cell – The cell provides information about the placement process and also equips them with the requisite skills. Some of the companies that have offered placements include IOCL, BPLC, HPCL, NTPC etc.

SVNITAA - The SVNIT Alumni Association has chapters in India and abroad that hold annual meets to socialize and network.

DCCC - Day Care Centre for Children at the institute takes care of the children of employees/PG Students/ Research Scholars. It is a common facility essentially meant for staff-welfare.

University Fests - The students of the institute organise festivals like MindBend (annual technical festival), Sparsh (annual cultural festival), Autumnfest (annual Automotive-Entrepreneurial festival) and MMNCT (Manoj Memorial Night Cricket Tournament).

Guest House - SVNIT Guest House is located on the opposite side of SVNIT main gate on Surat-umas road. It has of 12 fully furnished rooms along with telephone lines and Television.

Achievement

In the year 2010, India Today ranked SVNIT, Surat as 22nd best engineering college among top 25 engineering colleges in the country.
