UPSC Notification of Civil Services Exam on Hold after massive stir in Lok Sabha

The Centre decided to put the pro - English Union Public Service Commission changes on hold. This came only after a fierce opposition pulled in by the political parties.

The notification that caused a massive stir was released by the commission on 5 March 2013. It stated that ‘English’ as a language will be a pre requisite for all the IAS aspirants for the Civil Services Examination .

According to the new norms, Marks in English would matter in the merit list, twenty five candidates would be a mandatory number in an examination centre to conduct tests in any regional language.

Any candidate who wishes to opt for a regional language should have graduated in the same language.

The notification, also drew criticism from CMs with a number of them, including Shivraj Singh Chauhan (MP), J Jayalalithaa (TN) and Narendra Modi (Gujarat), writing to PM Singh demanding withdrawal of the notification. Key UPA ally DMK too had objected to the move.

It also must be noted that, the debate over language in the civil services examination that is responsible for the central services, including the IAS, IPS, IFS and IRS etc won’t affect the preliminary test which is supposed to go on the floor on 26 May 2013.
