About National Institute of Technology - NIT Puducherry

National Institute of Technology, Puducherry (NITPY) is an Autonomous Technical Institute functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. It is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology which are located in different parts of the country. NIT Puducherry is also one of the newly formed 10 NITs, sanctioned by the Government of India in 2009, as part of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan (2007–2012). NITPY was under the mentorship of NIT Trichy till December 2011, when Dr. Mrs. S.K. Pandey was appointed as the director of NIT Puducherry. The institute started its academics in 2010 with 3 engineering departments - Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering at undergraduate level. The M .Tech in CSE course commenced in 2014. The institute reserves 50% seats for students of home state Puducherry, Mahe, Karaikal and Yannam and 3% of seats are filled up through the DASA program for NRI students. National Institute of Technology, Puducherry has been as ‘Institute of National Importance’. The institute campus is nestled in Karaikal, a coastal enclave in the basin of river Kaveri. NIT Puducherry is currently functioning from Arignar Anna Government Arts and Science College, Nehru Nagar, Karaikal. Land for the construction of the new campus had already been procured near village Poovam (258 acres) from the government of Puducherry in Karaikal. Construction of the college campus is under progress as of 2015.

National Institute of Technology, Puducherry is situated in Karaikal. The campus is located on the National Highway NH45, at about 50 kms from Chidambaram towards south.

Facilities at NIT, Puducherry

Library – It has a good collection of books and subscribes to journals and latest technological magazines.

Core Laboratory - The electronics laboratory in the institute functions to serve both the ECE and EEE department. It has a good number of high class equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators etc. ECE labs include Microprocessors and Microcontrollers lab- 8085 and 8086, Microcontroller training kits, 8051 and 196. EEE machine labs include single phase and three phase squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors, single phase and three phase transformers.

Computer Laboratories – The Institute has 2 fully functioning computer laboratories with high end desktops equipped with both Linux and windows OS. LAN connectivity is provided in each laboratory and Wi-Fi connectivity is available to all classrooms, faculty block and administration.

Lecture Halls - The Institute has classrooms, lecture halls and conference room which are well equipped with modern facilities such as Multimedia Projector, LAN and Wi-Fi connectivity etc.  

Fellowships - A few research fellowships are available to full time research scholars who are not receiving any financial support/ scholarship from other Agencies or State or Central Governments.

Sports – Various sports facilities are provided to the students. These help in developing their personality and in shaping physical, mental and social well-being.

Medical Facilities – The institute has a MOU signed with Vinayaka Mission Medical College and Hospital, Karaikal for providing medical facilities to the students.

Training and Projects - The institute students are required to complete 60 days of industrial training to be eligible for the award of B.Tech. degree. Apart from frequent industrial visits, training sessions are also organized for the students. Students are actively encouraged and funded to pursue projects in various fields. They have displayed prototypes of their projects in various events.

Institute Clubs – The institute has various clubs which cater to the extracurricular and co-curricular activities.

Some of these are:

  • Innovation club – It is an interdisciplinary club which primarily focuses on collecting innovative and creative ideas from students and transforming them into worthwhile projects.
  • Sports Club – The club frequently organises inter-NIT tournaments, various national and state level competitions. The Institute celebrates annual sports day with a culmination of varied sports activities - athletics, badminton tournament, intra-college basketball etc.
  • Literary Club – It is aimed at developing the verbal skills of the students. The club apart also publishes its annual magazine, IGNITE: the voice of NITPY. It also conducts various events including debates, group discussions and competitions to promote vocational skills.
  • Culture Club – The club organises and conducts various cultural activities annually to showcase the rich culture and tradition brought forward in NITPY.

Sports - The institute has sports facilities for various sports like volleyball field, basketball court and facilities for other sports events as well.
