B.Sc LLB (Hons) or Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Legislative Law Honors is an undergraduate Law Double Degree Integrated Course. It is a combination of the study of Law and Science with Honors. B.Sc LLB, with Honours, provides an integrated understanding of the Principles of Science and Law in their entirety than in specified areas. B.Sc stands for Bachelor of Science, while LLB stands for Bachelor of Law. It is a set of categorized rules and regulations under which any society or country is governed. By Honours, it is meant that it is a Higher Academic Standard Course requiring in-depth study of the subjects. It also means that one has to study a number of subjects as compared to a Simple B.Sc LLB course. The honours course is ranked above the Simple, Pass, General or Ordinary Bachelors Course. It is called an Integrated Course because its course curriculum involves the study of Science along with the in-depth study of law and legislature. B.Sc LLB (Hons) is a five Years Course with 10 Semesters. The maximum duration to clear the course is a period of 8 (eight) years from the date of admission to the First Semester Course. The medium of instruction is mostly English unless specified.

B.Sc LLB (Hons) Eligibility

  • The basic eligibility criteria for pursuing a B.Sc LLB (Hons) course is a Pass in the Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) system in Science Stream with an aggregate not less than 50% of the total marks or an equivalent examination such as 11+1, ‘A’ level in Senior School Leaving certificate course) from a recognized University of India or outside or from a Senior Secondary Board or equivalent, constituted or recognized by the Union or by a State Government or from any equivalent institution from a foreign country recognized by the government of that country. These regulations can be varied but are mostly similar in almost all institutes.
  • Applicants who have obtained +2 Higher Secondary Pass Certificate or First-Degree Certificate after prosecuting studies in distance or correspondence method shall also be considered eligible for admission 
  • Admission to the First Year of the 5-Year B.Sc., LL.B. Honours Degree Program is made strictly on merit, based on the Entrance Examination. An interview may be conducted as well.
  • National-level Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) / State Level Law Entrance test scores are accepted, they provide extra weight in some institutes, while in others, these are not mandatory.
  • The maximum age for seeking admission into a stream of integrated Bachelor of law degree programs is limited to 20 (twenty) years in the case of the general category of applicants and to 22 (twenty-two) years in the case of applicants from SC, ST, and other Backward communities.
  • The maximum age for seeking admission into a stream of Three Years Bachelor’s Degree Course in Law is limited to 30 (Thirty) years and 35 (Thirty-Five) years for the applicants belonging to SC or ST or any other backward communities.
  • Most of the institutes reserve a certain number of seats for foreign candidates.
  • Certain numbers of seats are also reserved for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, along with reservations for Persons with Disability.
  • As per stipulation of the Bar Council of India the minimum percentage of marks not below 45% of the total marks in case of general category applicants and 40% of the total marks in case of SC, ST, and OBC applicants, to be obtained in the qualifying examination, such as +2 Examination.
  • Candidates awaiting results of the qualifying examination can also appear for the test on condition that they produce proof of having passed the qualifying examination with the prescribed marks at the time of interview.

Minimum Period of Internship

  • Each registered student shall have completed a minimum of 20 weeks of internship during the entire period of legal studies under NGO, Trial and Appellate Advocates, Judiciary, Legal Regulatory authorities, Legislatures, Parliament, Other Legal Functionaries, Market Institutions, Law Firms, Companies, Local Self Government and other such bodies as the Institute shall stipulate, where law is practiced either in action or in dispute resolution or in management.
  • Provided that, an internship in any year cannot be for a continuous period of more than 4 Weeks and all students shall at least go through once in the entire academic period with Trial and Appellate Advocates.
  • Each student shall keep an Internship diary in such form as may be stipulated by the Institute concerned and the same shall be evaluated by the Guide in Internship and a Core Faculty member of the staff each time. The total mark shall be assessed in the Final Semester of the course in the 4th Clinical course.

Regulations of Examination and Evaluation

Examinations consist of:

1.  Continuous Assessment
2.  Mid Semester Examination
3.  End-Semester Examination

  • The scheme of continuous assessment shall be designed according to the needs of the teaching-learning process in the course and will be disclosed to the students at the beginning of every semester by the teacher concerned.
  • The examination shall ordinarily be held at the end of every semester.
  • The evaluation shall be regular and continuous as per the UGC requirements. The end semester examination will be for 80 marks (three hours duration) in each paper/subject of study out of the total 100 marks except in Practical Training Papers i.e., Compulsory Clinical Courses. 
    The Question Paper shall consist of five parts and at least one question from each part is compulsory.   
  • The rest of the marks i.e., 20 marks shall be based on continuous assessment in the form of a Practical paper / internal evaluation / Case study or field survey/courtroom Room Exercises, Mid- Mid-semester examination, and Project work and report thereof or Dissertation, etc.

To maintain uniformity and transparency, the following criteria shall be adopted:    

(i) Project Work / Dissertation or Report = 10 marks.
(ii) Mid-semester Tests = 5 marks.
(iii) Viva-Voce Examination = 5 marks.

  • The College Principal shall put a countersignature on dairies / Project Work/dissertation / practical papers / internal assessment work to be maintained by students. 
  • A student who does not maintain such dairies / Project work or report etc. and or fails to secure at least 45% of the total marks assigned to the internal examination shall be debarred from appearing in theory papers. Internal evaluation against each student shall be completed before filling out the examination form for the due semester examination.
  • All dairies/project reports/project works / internal examination answer scripts / practical papers duly assessed or marked by the concerned teacher/examiner/principal including the marks obtained in the viva-voce examination shall be kept in the custody of the Principal concerned till the declaration of the result and one year thereafter, and the same are subject to verification or scrutiny of the Controller of Examinations, wherever deemed necessary.

Rules for Submission of Project Work / Dissertation or Report

  • A Project Work/report or dissertation shall be on standard A-4 size paper and shall not exceed 5,000 Words inclusive of footnotes, and is applicable to the main body and conclusion only (does not include Index of Authorities, Bibliography ) with an abstract, if any, in not more than 300 words
  • A margin of at least 3 cm shall be left on all sides.
  • The content of the Project Work or dissertation is either in legible handwritten or typed/printed in 1.5 spaces.
  • The Project Work/assignment or the dissertation must contain a certificate from the supervising teacher concerned stating that the Project Work or the dissertation is the result of the student’s own work/investigation.

The Project Work or the dissertation or report is excepted to:

(i) Have an appropriate title, that reflects the basic thrust of the topic,
(ii) a brief discussion on the subject matter which relates to the topic,
(iii) focus on presenting an analysis of the topic which includes students’ original thinking using analogies from similar situations in other areas of law, etc.
(iv) reliance on the opinion of well-regarded scholars (all sources must be duly credited) published in books or in academic journals,
(v) discussing case-laws in original (Indian and other common law jurisdictions) and, more importantly, critically analyzing them to try and address the questions in the topic or the  project, 
(vi) other reliable sources such as preparatory materials, Reports of the Law Commission of India or other such bodies, etc. may be consulted.

  • A candidate shall be admitted to an examination provided he/she prosecutes a regular course of study prescribed for that particular examination in constituent or affiliated law colleges and secures at least 45% of marks in each paper in the internal evaluation and in compulsory clinical papers.
  • Every candidate found to be qualified under the above sub-clause shall have to pay the prescribed fees and apply in the prescribed form through the Principal of the constituent or affiliated college. If he/she fails to pass or fails to present himself/herself at the examination, he/she shall forfeit the examination fees paid for that examination.
  • A candidate shall have to submit a certificate from the Principal of the College concerned regarding his/her bonfires, satisfactory progress of studies, and testifying to his/her good conduct and character.

Criteria for Passing the Semester Examination

  • To qualify examination, a candidate shall have to obtain a minimum aggregate of 45% of marks and secure at least 40% of marks in each theory paper whether compulsory or optional, and a minimum of 45% marks in internal assessment.
  • In Compulsory Clinical papers, the total marks are divided between the theory and internal assessment as indicated in each individual paper. The different clinical programs in the internal examination shall consist of a program like Project Work / Project Assignment or Report / Mid-semester Tests / Legal-Aid camp / Moot Court Exercise / Seminar/dissertation etc. and viva voce examination which will be completed within four months from the date of admission in that semester.
  • Scaling of the internal marks will be arranged by the Controller of Examinations, wherever deemed necessary.
  • To pass any of the semester examinations a candidate must have passed in all the subjects of that Semester as per the provisions mentioned in the preceding rules. 
    The results of the candidates appearing in the 10th Semester shall not be declared unless and until the candidate has been declared passed in all the papers up to the 9th Semester examination.
  • A candidate, to be eligible for the Semester examination, must have completed the requisite 75% attendance in the given semester.

Eligibility for Admission to the Semesters

  • A candidate, to be eligible for admission for the next Semester, must have successfully kept the term for the preceding Semester, irrespective of the result of the Semester examinations. 
  • A candidate needs to clear all the subjects/papers up to the 7th Semester to get him/herself eligible for admission into the 9th Semester Course. 
  • A maximum of 3 (three) theory papers may be allowed as back papers in a Semester. A candidate will be allowed to clear his or her back paper or papers within the prescribed limit of 8 years from the date of admission in the First semester in either of the courses.

A candidate who could not appear or failed in any semester examination will be allowed to clear the same as follows:

(a) First Semester with the regular third or even Semester examination.
(b) Second Semester with the regular fourth or even Semester examination and so on.

  • A candidate may be allowed to repeat or re-appear any one of the theory papers in the next due semester, except 9th and 10th for “betterment” of marks provided the candidate secures less than 55% marks in that paper.
  • No ‘betterment’ / back papers shall be allowed in practical papers (Compulsory Clinical Courses) in any Semester.    
  • A candidate to be eligible for admission to the 10th Semester must have successfully kept the terms up to the 9th Semester, irrespective of the result of the 9th Semester examination.
  • A candidate will get a maximum of 3 (three) chances to clear a Semester. Be it clarified that a candidate not appearing in any examination due shall lose that chance(s) allowed to him or her by the clause.
  • A student who fails after the third chance or repeat examination has to readmit himself/herself for the course in which he/she failed for that particular course/s when it is offered again subject to availability of seats except in the first semester of the above courses.

Formal Dress Code during the internship

Students placed under internship or in moot court exercise shall have a formal dress of legal professional in pupillage as follows:

  • For all: White / Black trousers, white shirt, black tie, black coat, black shoes and black socks.
  • Optional for Female students: Black printed sari, with white full sleeve blouse and covered black shoe or lawyer’s suit with a black covered shoe.
  • The formal Dress Code as above may be applicable during normal class hours.

Standard of Passing the Semester Examination

  • To qualify for a particular examination, a candidate shall have to obtain the minimum aggregate of 45% of marks and secure at least 40% of marks in each and every theory and clinical paper of the end semester examination and a minimum of 45% marks in an internal assessment of each paper.
  • In Clinical papers, the total marks are divided between the end semester examination and internal assessment in the ratio of 80: 20. The internal evaluation of clinical papers shall consist of programs like project/ assignment/ sessional exams/ moot court exercises/ seminar/ group dissertation and viva-voce examination which will be completed at least a week before filling up of semester examination form starts.
  • Scaling of the internal marks is arranged by the Controller of examination, wherever deemed necessary.
  • To pass any of the semester examinations a candidate must have passed in all the subjects of that semester as per the provisions mentioned in the preceding rules. The results of the candidates appearing at the 10th Semester of the Five Year Law Course shall not be declared unless and until the candidate has been declared passed in all the papers up to the 9th-semester examination, Similarly, the results of the candidates appearing at the 6th semester of the Three-year law course shall not be declared unless and until the candidate has been declared passed in all the papers up to 5th Semester examination.
