M.Sc Applied Solid State Physics or Master of Science in Applied Solid State Physics is a two-year postgraduate degree program. This course is designed to provide a fundamental grasp of solid state physics, which underpins most of current gadget technology, and hence contains rudimentary quantum mechanics.
Quantum mechanics and solid state physics are reviewed. Schrodinger equation solution for band structure, crystal potentials that contribute to crystal structure, reciprocal lattice, structure-property connection Crystal structures and defects, X-ray diffraction, lattice dynamics, Quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, thermal properties, electrons in metals, semiconductors, and insulators, magnetic properties, dielectric properties, and confinement effects are some of the topics covered in this course.
Solid State Physics has also aided in the development of essential technical materials that have found use in sensor technologies, MEMS, and MOEMS. It has become critical for physicists to participate in the solution of actual engineering challenges.
