Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) is an autonomous institution established by the Government of India. The Institute has been accorded the status of “An Institution of National Importance” along with the lines of the IITs under an Act of Parliament (“Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology Act 2007”). RGIPT is co-promoted as an energy domain specific institute by leading Oil Public Sector Units (ONGC, IOCL, OIL, GAIL, NRL, EIL, BPCL and HPCL) in association with the Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB). RGIPT operating its academic activities from its main campus at Jais, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh and centres at Sivasagar, Assam (Assam Energy Institute, AEI) and Bangalore, Karnataka (Energy Institute Bengaluru, EIB).

Assam Energy Institute, Sivasagar is now offering Integrated Diploma and Degree (IDD) programmes aimed at inculcating manpower with sound theoretical and experimental background in frontier areas of engineering and technology. The emphasis is on understanding the scientific concepts and engineering principles involved in solving problems of practical importance in the relevant field using multidisciplinary approach. These IDD (Three years Diploma + Optional 3 Years B.Tech.) programmes seek to develop manpower of the highest quality to cater to the needs of modern industry and educational institutions.
