The D.Y.Patil Medical College was established in 1989 on a sprawling campus measuring 5.5 acres of land. The total bunt up area of the budding is 11172.0 sq. ft. After almost two decades of work as an affiliated Medical College, earlier of Shivaji University, Kolhapur and later of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, based on excellent and constant academic performance, a very strong and aesthetic infrastructural system, efficient and transparent governance and distinct potential for future progress , the department of Secondary and Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, on the recommendations of University Grants Commission under section 3 of UGC act of 1956, vide its resolution No. F.9-26/2004-U3 dated 1st September 2005, has accorded the 'University Status' to D.Y.Patil Education Society consisting of D.Y. Patil Medical College with immediate effect. The Medical College is recognized by Medical Council of India for undergraduate and post graduate programmes. The name of the college is already included in WHO directory. The College has become a Constituent College of the D.Y. Patil University, Kolhapur. The strength of the faculty is 164 which include Professors-24, Associate Professors-29, LecturerS-56 and Assistant Lecturers-55. The hospital at the Medical College is catering to the needs of population of Western part of Maharashtra State, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Kokan and Some parts of Karnataka State. In effect the hospital serves a population of more than six million with a highly subsidized rates. Average OPD of the hospital is around 1000 per day and occupancy is more than 95%. The college building houses laboratories for non-clinical subjects, Classrooms, Seminar Halls, Auditorium, Administrative block, Students amenities centre, library etc. The Medical College is a self-financed private institution.

Facilities

Hostel - The Medical College provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls accommodate 310 boys and 190 girls. Both the hostels are provided with excellent boarding facilities. Each room is provided with bed, table, chair, ceiling fan and cupboard. They are airy and with round the clock security, hot water and the safe drinking water are also provided in the hostel.

Library - The Medical College has more than eleven thousand volumes of different disciplines in health sciences and subscribes to 165 Indian and International journals. The total cost of collection is Rs. 50 lacks. In addition to this, the college also subscribes to 120 e-journals. The Library has four reading rooms with sitting capacity of 200 throughout day and night. Library services are available to the students from 8.00 am to 9.00 pm. Recently the reading room has been renovated to provide better academic atmosphere. In addition to the central library, each department has its own Departmental Library. The central library has been provided with internet facility and students and the faculty have open access to this facility.

The Hospital - Dr. D.Y.Patil Hospital and Medical Research centre is a teaching hospital attached to the Medical College. The Hospital is constructed on a sprawling campus measuring 25 acres of land. The Hospital is equipped with a gamut of state of art. Medical facilities required for primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare are provided. The civil cost of the building is Rs. 160.0 million and cost of the equipments and the furniture is Rs. 75.8 million.
 
The Speciality Unit - The Hospital has Trauma care unit, Neonatal ICU, ICU with 30 beds, ICCU with 10 beds and there are thirteen operation theatres in the hospital. Hospital has 604 beds. The hospital has developed some super-speciality like Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology etc. and the development of the other specialities are in pipe line.

Research - The University has established “University Department of Technology” to undertake various research and development Programmes specifically to develop medical technology & energy technology. Around 40% faculty regularly publish research papers in highly rated professional research journals. The faculty is provided with internet facility. The college, to promote research activities and create an awareness among the faculty, has an active Staff Research Centre. The Centre at regular intervals discusses current research problems in health science teaching, methodology and emerging areas of research in clinical practices. The quality of teaching is evident from the excellent University results the College has always produced.

Extra Curricular Activities - These include:

1. NSS Activity - Plantation Programme.
2. Medical College participates in all the programmes conducted by Government like Pulse Polio, Deworm, Vit. A supplementation etc.

Achievements

• The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences has placed this Medical College as the third best in the state of Maharashtra in terms of its overall achievements.
