K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research was established in 1981 to serve the needs of management and research. It is named after Padmabhushan (Late) Shri Karamshibhai Jethabhai Somaiya, an entrepreneur and philanthropist. A man of great foresight, he founded the Somaiya Vidyavihar, which today is a mini university comprising 33 educational institutions in the heart of Mumbai, 2500 teaching/non-teaching staff and catering to the needs of nearly 25000 students. He established Somaiya VidyaVihar in 1959, with a vision to serve the educational needs of the society at an affordable cost. Shri K. J. Somaiya believed that independent India should provide equal educational opportunities to every eligible Indian. Somaiya Vidyavihar, spread over 72 acres of green land, is home to various faculties such as Management, Engineering, Humanities, Science, Commerce, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Journalism & Mass Communication, Linguistics and Religion. SIMSR is housed in a spacious campus with a built up area of about 1 lakh square feet. The infrastructure includes air-conditioned classrooms ,discussion rooms, a large library, a seminar hall, an audio-visual (AV) room, a well-equipped computer lab, MDP Centre, auditorium and conference centre, and a comfortable hostel for boys and girls. The Institute conducts various programmes approved by the AICTE and the University of Mumbai and accordingly its organisation and functioning are based on the guidelines stipulated by these agencies. However, for the purposed of Public Trust Act and Income Tax Act, the Institute is a part of the Somaiya Vidyavihar, the Parent Body registered under the Society's Act. SIMSR has constituted its Governing Council as per the guidelines of the AICTE. The Governing Council of SIMSR approves all the rules and regulations for the operations of the Institute and is the supreme body of the Institute.

Computer Centre - A spacious centre equipped with the latest technology both in hardware and software. It can accommodate 250 student at a time. It provides uninterrupted broadband RF of 4 mbps, 24 x 7 internet access through Wi Fi hotspots enabled in different location in the Institute campus and hostel, separate browser centre for, e-Library facility, two online classrooms etc.
Class Rooms - All class rooms are centrally air-conditioned, equipped with LCD projectors, computers, Wifi hotspots and multimedia facilities.
Library - Located on the second floor of the main building. The Library has a very comprehensive collection of books and resource material. It is fully computerized and has an impressive collection of journals, periodicals and publication. Over 32,000 books , CD ROMs and cassettes covering all areas of management. Over 100 international and Indian journals, periodicals, and business publications.

Canteen & Mess - A well maintained and spacious canteen & mess provides multi-ethnic cuisine i.e strictly vegetarian. It can accommodate about 100 visitors at a time and provides breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner at reasonable rates.
Sports Facilities - These include cricket ground, open air chess board, basketball court, indoor badminton court, table tennis court and gymnasium.

Placements - Institutes placement record over the years has been exemplary. It has a consistent record of 100% placement. Placements at the Institute are handled by the students. Business Consultancy - The Institute offers management consultancy services through a dedicated consultancy group named Consultancy @ SIMSR. The cell consists of a team of 27 full time students with a cumulative professional experience of over 300 years in sectors like IT, automobile and media. Somaiya Social Cell - It is a voluntary body formed by students of the Institute and aims at making a difference in the lives of the various communities it works for. It was established in 2003. The Cell, headed by a Faculty Advisor comprises students from the first and second year of the Management Institute; the second year students mentor the first year students who in turn serve as the major drivers. Every year, the projects are carried out in two categories one comprising of projects that are carried over from the previous year and the other consisting of projects initiated in the present year. Seminar Hall - An air-conditioned hall with a seating capacity of over 200, equipped with state-of the-art LCD projectors, computers, Wifi hotspots and multimedia facilities. These are suitable for guest lectures, seminars and convocations.
